Just wanted to get some opinions on what my fellow internet marketers use for their hosting solutions. I personally have a dedicated server but I have used Hostgator shared plans in the past. These work well for most projects but anything demanding you will have issues.

What do rely on for your internet business - dedicated or shared servers?

If you start driving any kind of reasonable traffic to a site (PPC,PPV etc) then you're definitely going to need a VPS or dedicated hosting.

Shared is probably OK for most small SEO sites but for anything with volume - I cannot stress how important good quality hosting is....

I agree. Many people do not analyze bandwidth and resource usage before starting a large volume projects and can quickly get into a bind.

  • I used a shared plan for many, many years myself, but once you get a high volume of traffic you have to have a dedicated server, although I do have a host that takes care of all the administrative stuff. I'm not an IT guy, so I don't want all those headaches on top of what I already have to do.

I assume you are talking about managed vs. unmanaged servers?

I use a dedicated unmanaged server (very good price) and I use a third-party server management company for $30/month that handles all the server admin duties. I'm no UNIX administrator!

It seems like when you have your OWN dedicated server there is a sense of pride in knowing that it is your box and you don't have hundreds of other sites on them as well.

Can you share the name of the unmanaged server provider and the third party management company that you use?

    Thanks,

I think this would depend on opinion and your host etc. I would say anything above 10k visitors per day to a normal web page would be med-high volume.

You also have to take into consideration WHAT you are serving. Will your visitors be simply going to web pages with text and images which will be low file size or do you have a membership site with 1GB in videos that customers will download? Also how many concurrent connections?

This would all be a factor into what hosting. Shared, VPS, dedicated...
