Q: Blogger.com vs Wordpress?

I'm going to write part-article (previews) of the articles I get published on article sites - mainly EZA.

There'll be a link at the end of the preview that'll go to the full published version at EZA.

Is it necessary to use WPress? or would a simpler interface like Blogger.com be sufficient? In the sidebar, I may put some products to which I'm affiliated, and probably an opt-in too.

In terms of WP, I'm rather a noob, but am gradually getting to grips with the basics (thanks to SusanUSA, Sweet Jane, & Dean Holland) and I run it on my Hostgator Fantastico account. One thing that occurs to me is that for every hour I spend getting more familiar with WP, that's another hour I could spend writing and subbing a couple of articles.

    Ian it depends where you want to go with your blog, as far as I know WP can be a lot more customized compeared to blogger.com

    Also WP runs on your on server. Blogger.com doesn't, or does it?

    If you really want to go and make money with your blog, WP most likely is the way to go since it has a lot more options can be customized and results can be tested better, however all these options come, like you already noticed, with a bigger learning curve and some more time you need to invest.

    I don't know much about Blogger but if you do decide to go for WP I have a free ebook that shows you how to set it up and a video version too. Look in my sig for my blog, it's in the top left corner in my header.

      I've heard that the disadvantage to using a free platform like Blogger is that they can take your blog offline at any time for any reason. That's why you would want to use your own self-hosted blog on WP. More expensive and yes, a little more time-consuming but totally worth it in my view. Imagine putting in hours and hours of work just to have it disappear in an instant.

    Interesting viewpoint as usually people publish articles on article directories that point back to their own blog or site, not the other way around.

      Get your own hosting account and use the WordPress platform. The new version is quite nice.

      If you must use free hosting, don't use wordpress.com, because they will shut you down if put any affiliate links or try to monetize it in any way. Instead use blogger.

      But still I strongly recommend that you use WordPress on your own hosting account. That way you don't have to worry about getting your blog shut down for some TOS violation.

      Ian, either one of them will work fine

      I've used both in the past and never had any problem at all even with a free platform like blogger. As long as the information your publishing and linking to is nothing illegal you should be good to go.

      As far as wordpress set up...Caroline Middlebrook who posted in this thread has a great resource that is free for that...It is how I set up my first wordpress blog Which says a lot for it because I'm a bit of a technotard.

        Yes, some food for thought. Tim, certainly wasn't giving any thought to the observation that my plan is seemingly to reverse-engineer from WP/blog > article sites. Would you necessarily be suggesting anything +/- ...?

    I like both wordpress and blogger for the free versions of the site. I dont use wordpress.com because of the whole affiliate linking problem where you could only use 1 affiliate link in your site, but im not sure if that is still an issue.

    Hands down over anything I use wordpress for my own hosting. It is absolutely the best. But if you have to go free, i would stick with blogger for the affiliate link issue, and do some posts on a wordpress one as well just to cover your bases.

      As of late 2007 it was still an issue. That is when they shut down my blog: jjpmarketing.wordpress.com. They finally allowed me back in to remove the links and backup the content... but my blog was down for about 3 or 4 days before I knew about it. One of my website visitors contacted me to let me know. Don't use wordpress.com. I can't stress that enough.

    Hi Ian,

    I suggest that you set up your money site on WP. You can then have some feeder sites on blogger, squidoo, hub pages, wordpressdotcom all pointing back to your money site. Submit your articles to a couple of quality article directories and change the resource box each time for different anchor text pointing back to your WP money site.

    Hi Ian,

    I have a large network of Blogger and WordPress blogs. Self-hosted WP blogs tend to do better these days in terms of ranking as well as traffic generation. There are many useful plugins that make managing WP blogs easy.

    Think of EzineArticle submissions as your long-term traffic driving strategy. I personally have used that to drive over 1 millions visitors over 1 year so I know that it works like gangbusters so much so that I wrote a popular report in Oct called ArticleCashRobots on it.

    Have a good mix of WP blogs and blogger blogs. The advantage of using blogger blogs is that they are easy to build and look professional enough to convert visitors into sales.

    Another reason why you should also include WP blogs (self-hosted) ones is that you own them. No matter what PR blogger blogs will grow to in future, there just isn't any assurance that Google will not shut down Blogspot in future, so at least you still have your WP blogs.

    My humble two cents Ian-

    From the little testing I've done and through conversations with others who blog a whole heck of a lot more than I do, having a blog on blogger.com will get you ranked on Google much faster (because Google owns Blogger.com).

    Wordpress is definitely worth learning/mastering because as others in the thread mention, you have MUCH more flexibility and control.

    I use a combo - I create a blog on Blogger.com and start posting there (and I hope you're pinging after each post) to get faster SER. I create a sister blog w/ Wordpress and start gradually "migrating" subscribers/readers from the Blogger blog to the Wordpress blog after I start seeing SER for the Wordpress blog.

    It gives you more time to get familiar with Wordpress AND get SER at the same time. Although it seems like extra work, it doesn't really take that much longer to do and the results are worth it.

      That's right....I've had blog posts listed within literally minutes of publishing with my blogspot blogs. Not so with Wordpress. (Can take weeks :-(

        One more here - make sure you have your WP set to ping ping-o-matic.

          I guess I'm a bit too lazy for that (to my detriment). Though I do have the WP blogs set ping automatically.
          I had one blog with WP that used to get great search listings, then they shut me down for having more than three outgoing links to 'unassociated' sites.
          (Still not sure what they meant, but hey-ho)

    I have has blogger say they "might" delete my blogs for spam and that I had to defend them for review. My wordpress blog is doing very well now and is getting consistent search traffic now. I will never use anything but WP from now on.

    Wordpress is rock, blogger if for beginers. As well wordpress have many great features that blogger doest. But i would sugest you if you are going to make a site and moniteze it with adsence then I suggest you go with blogger you will get at list 0.05 more a click than usein wordpress platform. Thats because google owns blogger as well adsence !

    Hi...

    If you have the funds and plan on this blog being a focal point of your business for the long term, than I would definitely use Wordpress self hosted blog.

    If you are low on cash or just need to quickly set up a blog, than Blogger is definitely the way to go. I have been a fan of Blogger for years and I have never had ANY of my blogs removed (and I have 21 of them).
