Clickbank claims 1,020 Hops, Google Analytics says 180 Impressions. Wtf??

As the title says really.

I don't do much Clickbank, and this is why:

I set up a Clickbank account for my product last year, and forgot about it.

I check it out today. There seems to be a consistant over-reporting of hops by Clickbank.

In the last 14 days Clickbank reports I've had 1,020 hops to the sales page, but Google Analytics reports that the sales page has only been viewed 180 times. (And Sam Stephen's DLGuard agrees with that, so kudos to Sam).

In the months since January 1st, Clickbank reports 4,696, but GA just 1,946

I've started to wonder if my page has been cloned in some strange way and I'm getting ripped off. Does anyone have any similar experience?

Anyone got any thoughts? I've not been on here a while, so apologies if this is a well-discussed area; but I really would appreciate your input...

Sounds like it may be repeat crawling by spider software or something similar.

I was wondering that, but that's a hell of a ratio of spiders to real people.

Spiders and bots are not counted by Google's Analytics; they don't trigger the javascript. Honestly, i'm not certain if CB has the same accuracy but it's definitely possible and would account for the discrepancy.

I'm willing to ride with it for the sake of an easy life - but are there that many spiders out there? Seriously?

Just seems a hell of a ratio - and that you may as well throw away any reporting of any kind that Clickbank does if that is the case. After all, who knows what the spiders are spidering.

From the looks of my stats off of cpanel, LOTS of spiders and bots!

This is the first time I'm hearing that clickbank is over-reporting hops. The opposite is usually the case.

    Its definately bots and spiders!

Every time I post a blog post, even with no follow I get a spike at CB in my hits within the hour. I wouldn't rely on the CB stats at all. if I did I would be in tears over my conversion rates.

Google analytics with an /outbound/ tag is more accurate for me, or even stats on cpanel. I compare those 2 to get a better picture.

Thanks chaps. Very interesting. I won't bother with Clickbank hop rates any more.

One further question - how do you monitor your stats/conversion rates as an affiliate, when you are sending the traffic and dont have access to the site stats in any form?
