Color Scheme Opinions, Please

Hi, everyone.

I'm setting up a blog for a friend in the chess niche, and I'm kind of teetering back and forth on the color scheme issue.

Typically, I don't like black and white blogs because they are too plain, but in this instance it kind of makes sense because of the chessboard.

What do you think? Too plain? Or does it make sense with this particular niche?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

EDIT: Link removed. Thank you everyone for your suggestions.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Just Black & White looks a bit plain and uninteresting.

I took a look over at Amazon and saw a book cover that
uses an overlay color to make the picture more interesting:

An alternative is to add another color to the Black & White
color scheme such as red, e.g for headlines, post titles,
    navigation, etc.

    Dedicated to mutual success,

Both are excellent suggestions. Thanks, Shaun.

I quick search for chess table images reveals, actually, most chessboards are not black and white

The existing black bg is too dark for may taste...

If it was me, I'd make only 2 changes.

    1) make the mouse over on the nav bar deep red.

    2) I'd change the font in the header graphic. You have a grunge font and I'm not sure grunge matches the chess crowd. I'd be tempted to try Rockwell Bold or a sans serif -- but if your guy likes it, then leave it.

I would go with a two tone look, a dark red velvet look, like a burgundy with a darker beige, chess is a more sophisticated game so you have to make the site look rich.
