How best to monetize generic traffic?

Very luckily I've bought a domain which has over 100K monthly searches. The competition levels aren't very high (at the moment). This may be because its an untapped niche (unlikely), or because people are aware that the traffic isn't worth the effort.

I have about 6 months to optimise the site and get good SEO foundations before the traffic starts coming in hard (its a very seasonable domain). The problem is, the people who arrive on the website aren't 'buyers', they're simply looking for information, unrelated to any brand or product.

I wouldn't normally take on a project like this, but the traffic prospects and lack of competition are appealing to me, and it looks like a fun project. The only problem is, I have no idea how to monetize the traffic!

Adsense ads will be unrelated to anything inparticular and will probably end up with a horrible CTR. My only thoughts are to build some sort of list, but getting people to sign up to it may be tricky without some sort of incentive?

Have any Warriors had experience with monetizing very generic traffic?

Thanks

    Hey man,

There is a simple solution here.

there is another form of an affiliate product called a CPA affiliate product. CPA affiliate products could be the best way to monetize your website. I'm not sure what your niche is, but there a lot of different niches that could fit into a CPA affiliate.

Also, depending on what type of niche this you could always use that hub site with a lot of traffic to drive traffic to several other sites that are product related. That could also work.

Also another idea I could suggest, you can make a deal with a local store owner to use that site as virtually a hubsite for that store and in turn have a store pay you to sell their products online.

I give a complete indepth tutorial on how to do this from beginning to finish coming out tomorrow, if you check out it could help you get started.

    Hope this helps,

Thanks for the suggestions Bonk, although with CPA you run in to the same problem of relevancy. How can you decide on relevant ads when the traffic is so generic! Haha. I guess I'll just have to decide on a demographic and go after them.

The traffic will be localised to the UK.

Anyone else had any success monetising generic traffic?

Tough to say without more info. So I'm going to make an example

Let's say your seasonal informational website is (wow im having a hard time thinking of something that you couldnt have a product to sell someone..) I give.. I say stick with pop-up advertising to monetize them.

My suggestion would be to go with CasaleMedia.com for this and signup as a publisher(Most generalized ads I have seen with pop-up position available). Reasoning is popups (just 1 though) arent as annoying as people make them out to be and if your traffic is good tier1 etc you can earn at the very least half a penny for each absolute visitor that triggers one. Their going to your site for information not to buy anything so you literally need to hit them with something if you want to make money from your work

Thanks cbright, along those lines some sort of CPM ad network may be the answer!

Hi Mr Wonton- have you looked into pop under or interstitial monetization. Depending on traffic volume and geo, these can yield some of the highest CPM rates. Can you tell us more about your site?

By the way, I've heard of Casale Media, I would also try Spark Studios. You can earn up to $3.00-$5.00 CPM for US/UK/WE/CA/AU traffic...

Thanks for the suggestion Nature, I'll definitely investigate CPM, it had slipped my mind actually.

There's not really too much to say about the site. Its only visited by people wanting to find out a quick piece of information that doesn't relate to any products or services! Totally generic. Sorry I can't reveal much more than that, you never know whos reading!

Anybody else had experience in monetizing generic traffic?
