Why You Should Create Your Own Product!

by glopin2003 52 replies
A lady ask me why was it important to create her own product, she thought IM was just about finding products to promote. I told her that she can promote other people's product and make a "commission" and be happy or she can create her own product and keep 100% and partner with her affiliate and get a bigger piece of the pie.

What would you do if you knew that you were only one product way from achieving your goals?

Its the key to IM success.

I've done both and continue to do both and find that both can work very well. But, my profitability for time spent is higher promoting other people's products.

To increase that, you want to use the tactics they are using to sell more. Start building a swipe file and implement some of the strategies and your personal product sales will increase

The key is lists. Yours and the those belonging to affiliates. That's the power... the relationship you have with people who buy from you or at your recommendation. In the IM niche, you don't even need a big list. A couple thousand can bring you a full-time income easily - just from mailing offers that you've vetted on a regular basis. Trusting you is what earns you the $.

Even if you create products, you still have to sell it to someone. The easiest, quickest, lease expensive and most efficient way to do that is to your own list and to affiliates' lists.

creating your own product sounds like a daunting task, but something which should be done for self growth, more experience, and more money.

I'm not ready quite yet for some different reasons. that's where I'm at right now.

Here are my reasons product creation is better for the average marketer:

          1. You can create an affiliate program - I get nearly all my traffic from other IM'ers web sites - they link to me eagerly and often because they get paid. I really don't do much SEO on my main site any more because my affiliates send me all the traffic I need. I let them worry about ranking in Google while I worry about creating my brand.

          2. You are outside the control of third parties who can destroy your business model overnight with one rule change. Remember when eBay PLR ebooks were popular? Ebay took them all down in one week with a rule change. Your own product gives you long-term security.

          3. You get to answer support tickets - a great way to interact and learn from your customers. Also a great way to ask for testimonials! It is also where I get most of my product ideas. One of my customers bragged to me a while back that he has bought EVERY product I sell! There is no easier person on earth to sell to than a satisfied customer.

          4. You get to build a mailing list. I really don't use mine to push affiliate offers, but many successful product creators do. I try to put notices to my blog posts in my email notifications, and that pushes traffic to my site - and those readers have bought from me before - again, the best kind of traffic to have.

          5. It's just easier. It really is. Affiliate marketing/Article Marketing/Creating zillions of sites is a daily, difficult grind that can be very discouraging, particularly for newcomers.

I concentrate my time in creating content and value under MY brand, not a brand controlled by someone else. If you have convinced yourself that you can't create your own product for some reason, rethink that pesky little 'self-lie' and stop selling yourself short. One of the quickest and best models is to create a product that shows how to use another product. There are some members here that are doing that successfully.

Creating a product opens up a whole new world of interaction with customers, competitors and affiliates that you would never get otherwise. It's like a pump that just needs a bit of priming.

There's very good reasons to create your own product, one of which is that you get to sell something that is yours alone and is unique. There's a sense of satisfaction knowing that you have created something that no one else has. But more importantly, having your own product means that your financial situation is not dependent on what happens to other people's products.

For people starting out, affiliate marketing can be a very good way to break into the internet marketing business though. Frank Kern recommends becoming an affiliate just so you can work out if a given product sells or not. If it does, you can then think about creating a similar product that is better marketed and provides better value.

I agree with this post that there is a sense of satisfaction in creating your own product which you cannot get from selling other people's products. I've made products in both non IM and IM niches which have both flopped and been dynamite. No doubt your emotions are on the line when you create a product. But, if you create something of quality and it does well in terms of sales I'm not sure there's a better feeling in the IM world.

I agree, creating your own product is like a must-do in IM if you're looking to make a lot of money. The only problem with creating your own product is that it can cost ~$500 to hire programmers, publishers, etc, and it will take up a lot of your time. Then you will need to get people to promote it and if you're unsuccessful at promoting it, well, let's just say you wasted a whole bunch of time and money. This is the + in promoting others products; you get a wide range of products to choose from, and you're pretty certain some of them are going to sell.

Personally, money aside I find that product creation is much more rewarding for me. I actually love doing it and I love helping people so it kills two birds with one stone.

On the flip side though if you don't like product creation there is nothing that said you can't make great money being an affiliate.

    Cheers,

All of you guys give valid points. Your first product will sell but not as well as you want it to and the only reason why is that you did not have all of the answers. And that is the point, you have to do it and gain experience. You have to know first hand what your market likes and don't like. If the product bombed now you know the areas you had to clean up and you created a better one and had success. You wont know until you take action!

You can keep 100% of $17 as a product owner, or you can keep 25% of $1000 as an affiliate, while still building a list to play with those prospects some more.

I know there's more to it than that, but just trying to put things into perspective, as there are some people out there who make more as affiliates than even some of the 'top' product owners do.

Of course, both are amazing business models, and there's nothing wrong with one or the other... whatever appeals to you and builds you a business is the way to go!

Having your own product is great. You can sell it, but it's also leverage. If there is a great product released that you want to promote, you can use your products as bonuses to help entice people to buy through you.

leverage and lists, i agree here.

You product has to be good, but it needs to sell. If you have not had or never built a lists of prospect you will notice some very massive changes when you do.

IF you cant do this, then use leverage? huh? what do I mean? use other peoples list! they have done the hard work and I liike to think you can benifit from that. Works well for me anyway.

I am not saying that creating your own products is a not good thing.....

But, I do not like it when everyone and their dog makes products. Especially products that are regurgitated with the product maker having no real experience.

Don't get me wrong, I love buying good quality products from people. I just don't see it as a cookie cutter approach that everyone should take to make money online.

So it looks like we went way left field. For someone to really make a full time living in Internet Marketing you have to stop taking a commission and get 100% of the profit by producing your own high quality product.

That is the key two success...

both of you explained that you are upset about the quality of the products you are receiving and you guys are right. You have to make sure that the products you purchase actually help you get somewhere in your career. That is why we buy books, and courses to further our career not set us back.

That is why you always have to look to see if the product owner stands by their product. If they do, they don't mind giving you your money back if you do not like it.

I don't get it when people say they can't create a product of their own. It's so easy.

If you can write a decent article, and another one and another one, you can turn them into a special report, using a free online PDF creation service. No need to create a 50 pages long Ebook to get started. Just do it ;-)

This is the problem right here. How do we know if we can write a "decent article"?

In fact a lot of people do NOT write "decent articles". But since everyone's telling newbies to write articles and to create their own products ("it's so easy!"), the ebook landscape is littered with junk. Sometimes junk sells very well, true enough.

I do agree with what the OP of this thread has said, that sometimes new people make mistakes/bad products and it's a learning thing......but encouraging any old body to add to the pile.... I don't know about that.

I think it all depends on what are your strengths and weaknesses. Some people will be great at generating traffic but will suck at selling them something. In this case it's best to partner up with a product owner who knows how to convert your traffic. Our society is all about specialization and it's no different when working on the web.

    Ryan,

I hear you, I totally understand what you are saying. The key to what you are saying is that people who are inexperienced sometimes make bad products. I get that. Anything you do the first time is not going to be perfect. That is why you get feedback and you go back and you make your product better before you put it out.

Yes, alot of people do not tell newbies that and they should that is why your opinion matters because they will know that their product will have to be of value.

Yes, there are plenty of people (myself included) who make great money promoting other people products. But look at it this way? why did you choose to promote that person? because you either purchased or believe that their product would be great for someone else.

You think that product creator you are promoting was not once a newbie who produced a bad product? No way? they were given feedback from people like you who pushed them to make their product better and now they not only make a affiliate commission but they also make 100% on their product plus allow us (affiliates) to get a piece of their master piece.

so, moral of the story is still the same. It all starts with the creation of a quality product. That is how you and I make this IM business a success.

I am transitioning away from affiliate marketing and getting into product creation. For me, I can see the huge value in creating my own products and working with affiliate partners to build my list and increase my earnings. I still do some affilate stuff on my own, but will decrease my focus on it.

    My 2 cents anyway. :-)

It needs to be a natural progression, starting as newbies, easiest is to promote affiliate products. This will help you to get the hang of the IM business. Next will be PLR follow by your very own products.
One important factor common to the three stages is "helping others", the reward follow suit.

    • I think that if you are completely new to IM the easiest thing is to sell other peoples products. That is how you know what people will buy, and what niche you want to get into. Once you find something that you find success with, I would build on that niche and then research it and create my own product or outsource it.

I think it is very important to try out the market with existing products that are related. Otherwise you may spend a lot of time and money creating a product, to find out that there is no market for it.

So overall I believe in creating your own product, and agree that it makes you a LOT more money than selling other people's stuff. It just depends what level you are at and how much time and money you have to invest.

Reading the responses on this forum reveal the passion you guys have in IM! I totally agree with unlimited marketing. If you are new to the scene, I would assume the best way to enter the field is by selling other people's products. Once you've accrued some experience selling their products and understanding what the market needs, then your own product will be born. It's a phenomenal feeling when you are selling something you are passionate about and believe in. That, in my opinion, is more rewarding than just receiving hefty loads of $$$.

I vote for product creation. I had a box of material related to a hobby I have which I'd been tripping over and moving around my office for TWO FREAKIN' YEARS. It never occurred to me I had my first product literally under my feet. I had friends who would come over and use my copier to get some of the information I had gathering dust. When I finally got off my butt and decided to create my own product (thank you Tiffany Dow) it only took a week to put everything where it needed to be, two weeks to make the product good and three weeks to make it better than good. Has it made me rich, NO. However, it does make a consistent $300 to $500 a month which pays a few bills around here. It was my first consistant IM money and gave me the confidence and the cash to try a few other things. I may have a total of 20 hours total in this and its been making money for three years. Then, something strange happened. My customers were asking for more. It was such a odd and tiny niche that I really didn't think there was much more money there but I had a lot more material so I put it into an upsell and its working (sort of). Too soon to tell much but it looks like it has added a couple of hundred dollars a month for a weekends work.
