Guest blogging tip for newbies

Hi Folks,
Thought it was high time I got into guest blogging, but I made a schoolboy error with my first effort - here it is...

I found a nice blog to post on, good ranking, good content, etc.
I followed the info on the site about guest posting, and sent my article as directed.

No response.

The article was somewhat time relevant. It does hold value as a generic piece, but works better related to a specific event.

It's now been well over a week with no response. Since the site wants unique content, I have not used it on my site or other places - that content is stuck in limbo.

So, what I'm going to do is send another email saying I am 'unsubmitting' the content.

What I should have done in the first place is simply make email contact to see how speedy the webmaster was with responses.

That's the tip - for other people thinking of getting into guest posting, make contact *before* you submit your first content!

What is your niche? I might have a blog or two in which you could write. I'm building a network and am looking for writers.

I have a better method, I think, of letting people publish on my blogs. I'd prefer to give the writer freedom to write and post, as long as they don't just spin some article and spam a bunch of links. It can be win-win for everyone involved.

This is a nice idea but requires you to closely monitor your blogs.

Well, I got an email back from that blog owner, acknowledging my 'unsubmission', and confirming I could contact her with any future idea - which I will.

I have now submitted that article to a different site.

I found a site that puts bloggers and blogs together, and found a blog on it which could be great, so have submitted a new article to that site too.

A lot of waiting around, I feel impatient because I normally want to get an article out and about as soon as I've written it.

It's all part of the learning curve though, so although I have yet to have any guest posts up and running, I'm hoping my investment of time and patience will pay off!

Can anyone share sites that accept guest bloggers? Or maybe a site that lists blogs that accept guest posts? Namely the IM niche?

      Hi Coby,
The site I found was via this forum, and it's called My Blog Guest Guest blogging: Looking for guest bloggers or guest post? Join MyBlogGuest! (not affiliate link)

I wasn't looking in the IM niche on this occasion, but there seems to be a good few opportunities there in that niche, so worth a peek.

      Cheers,

Well, I've had a couple of guest posts published now, so making headway.
I have a question for you experienced guest bloggers though...

Is there a standard waiting time to get posts approved? Or is a case of 'how long is a piece of string?'

I seem to find a lot, that posts are sitting in a 'pending' queue, with no indication of when/if they might get approved.

I suspect it's just a case of me me being impatient, but was wondering if anyone had any views about whether to chase up or just wait?

        Cheers,
        Gordon

I have a slightly different approach from many guest
bloggers (and it mirrors my way of looking at many
online opportunities) - and it lies in trying to get
the maximum LONG-TERM benefit from any relationship.

So, while I may submit a guest blog to one place, I'm
not looking on it as a 'one shot' thing, but more as
a way to get introduced to the blogger and his/her
audience... and, if we're a good fit, to see if it
can lead to an ongoing guest blogging arrangement.

In that case, you become more of a 'syndicated
columnist' with a publishing schedule - and don't
have to worry too much about whether or not your
next post will get published, or when.

While you cannot spread yourself too thin by doing
too many such columns, you can reap rich rewards
by writing/blogging for a few top notch blogs that
have readerships targeted to your own interests,
and where responsiveness to what you're publishing
          is higher.

          Hope this helps

          All success
          Dr.Mani

P.S. - So, to address your original question directly,
I definitely consider both 'patience' and 'persistence'
(by way of following up) of great importance to my
          guest blogging ventures.

            It is helpful, thank-you.

I agree about the long term relationship aspect, but it's the timescale for getting the first one accepted.
On a few occasions now I have had article sitting in limbo for more than a week with no answer either way. I would have thought blog owners would be as keen to build good relationships with guest writers.

It's down to me I guess, my own level of patience!
