Hi,

What's the difference between a press release and article marketing?

A press release is more of a statement made that could be considered newsworthy, whereas an article is just a document that can discuss anything. It could be informative or used to pre-sell buyers. Press releases tend to follow a more strict format, and are submitted to PR sites. Regular articles are not accepted at press release sites. It usually costs more to get a press release written than a regular article, but you could possibly have your release picked up by news sites, increasing your traffic exponentially.

Used properly, a press release is supposed to be newsworthy. If it's picked up, you might get some good backlinks and traffic from it. Unfortunately, a lot of people use press releases the same way they do articles, so there seems to be a little confusion about how both should be used.

Articles are there to provide referral traffic and backlinks. If they get syndicated, you'll get some additional backlinks as well.

Also, I think of Press Releases in terms of being specifically about "entity" (you or your company). And often relate to an event of some kind. (ie: news)

Articles are more topic or theme related and generally answer a question, solve a problem or teach something.

A press release is about the company/services which they provide while article is about general information.

With press releases, usually the information is time sensitive and makes some sort of announcement, whereas the content provided in an article should be timeless (ideally) and educational.

Press releases are written in the third person and usually have a quote or two from the business owner included. They can be a company announcement, tied up with a holiday or related to a special event such as nursing appreciation week or the space launch.
