How can I get more traffic?

by Sylent
118 replies
Brand new site I made. Not many views.

So far I tried craigslist (didnt get much) tried youtube postings with my link. And I tried google adwords (but a little to pricey for me)

With a brand new site how can I get word out there of it without going broke that will actually bring in a lot of people?

It depends on your site. On the short term, just stick with only one that makes the more sense for your niche. It is not because it doesn't work that much you can't tweak it. Videos are often seen as higher perceive value and I love video marketing.

On the long run, of course you should diversifiate yourself.

I agree with Ted. Video marketing is a great way to quickly get to the top of the search rankings. Just make sure you optimise your video properly and then use services like fiverr to get you back links to help with your SERPs

There are tons of free ways you can get more traffic to your site, no matter it's age. You could do article marketing, blog commenting, forum posting, press releases, etc. I recommend starting with free methods and then moved to paid advertising once you have determined your site will convert and earn you money.

Why not sign up with Google Alerts for blogs that are in your niche and then post relevant comments on them. If you leave useful comments which lead back to an informative article on your site you will start to see more traffic.

Adding content regularly to your site will also increase your traffic. Use Social sites to bookmark your best posts as well. The more you spread your links around the more traffic you will get. It takes time but be persistent and consistent and the results will pay off.

Install Stat Press or Google Analytics on your site to see where your traffic is coming from. You can also use the Awstats function in your cpanel with your hosting account.

      Hope this helps.

Awesome idea! I love Google Alerts. I use them for ALL kinds of stuff.

I agree that starting guerilla can be a great way to go. Get your name out there via blogs and forums, learn to use twitter wisely, and make sure that your site is AWESOME enough to convert its visitors, and you'll have a great start.

Youtube is also a great way to go, since it's free and will let people know/see what you have to talk about. Bring your passion to the table!!

(p.s. I think it's pretty funny how everyone who is an "SEO Expert for Hire" is advising you unceasingly to set up strong backlinks, dive into keyword research, etc. Just an observation)

I strongly recommend using the "search" feature of this forum and do a keyword search on the word "traffic" and "article marketing". Invest a few days reading throughout those threads, take notes, and then come back with more specific questions.

    You can get traffic by:

    Paying for it.

    Using SEO / SEM techniques

Setting up joint ventures / strategic alliances.

Using content in different formats (text, audio, video, etc.).

Your question is so general there are over a million ways to answer it. You say you've "tried" a bunch of different things, but how indepth in studying them have you done? Let's take Adwords, as an example, you say it's a bit "expensive". Who did you learn Adwords or PPC marketing from? What kind of strategies were you using?
(By the way, those were rhetorical questions).

Traffic will not come unless you do linkbuilding and take your site to considerable position in search engines.
youtube, facebook marketing, adwords are all works but temporary best way is to do complete seo and linkbuilding.

I would say your journey to a traffic generating website begins with keyword research.
You need to know which keywords to target to get relevant traffic and also to see the kind of organic competition you might face.

    Good luck!

    Hello,

I love to use modern techniques. For example, I've created a 'lite' edition of a program. This lite (flash) edition runs inside Facebook, and my users spread the word with a single click (by simply using it). It works quite well.

    More content = More traffic

Start contacting relevant experts in your field and request them to send you a unique article to help your readers. I have personally found this technique works great as long as you have a decent looking website and good content on your website.

The key here is to be specific regarding what you like about the author and how their expertise can benefit your readers.

Here are a few places for you to find experts

    1. Ezinearticles
    2. About
    3. eHow
    4. Amazon
    5. Rtir
    6. Clickbank

You will be surprised how many experts will be glad to contribute an article to your website.

To take this to the next step, once the experts send you an article, request them whether they would be willing to do a monthly column.

All you need is about 30-50 experts who can contribute an article a month to have high quality unique content and additional traffic to your website.

Be prompt and courteous in your responses.

What this also does is that it gives you a great network of experts to create high quality information products- interviews, webinars, seminars and coaching programs.

  • Hi,

I posted this to another thread a while ago, but it's still relevant to your situation.

Here's what I would do first.

Step one - write at least 5, but preferably 10 articles pertaining to your niche. Be sure your main keyword is in the title, and mentioned at least twice in the first couple of paragraphs while keeping it readable.

Step two - Set up accounts at social bookmarking sites such as Twitter, Digg, Reddit, Stumbleupon, De.licio.us, and friendfeed just to name a few off the top of my head.

Step three - Post your articles at the popular article directories. (Google 'most popular article directories). Be aware that some of them won't take an article if it's been published somewhere else - that's why I said preferably ten articles.

Step four - Set up a Squidoo lens

Step five - set up a Facebook page.

Step six - Set up a HubPages page.

Step seven - Research and write an effective press release and submit to news services.

Step eight - Create a video describing your content and what your blog is all about. Submit to the video sites.

Step nine - Find other blogs in your niche and apply to be a guest poster.

If you do all this, you will get traffic, and it'll be fairly quick.

After that, I'd investigate paid methods. there are many, many other ways to get traffic other than Adwords - better ways in my opinion.

One method I like is to buy a slot from Mike Glaspie when he runs a media special. He runs literally millions of ads a year and it's not spam.

Ezine advertising still works if you can write a compelling ad.

    Good luck to you.

    Michael

Build links to your site, CREATE youtube videos, and just generally put out good content. Use Google keyword tool (Google it) to identify keywords you want to target. You can scope out the competition for said keywords by using allintitle:keyword in Google search results to see how many people are using it in their title tag.

You'll also want to look into installing analytics, and some seo tools like seoquake. Fortunately, you came to the right place to learn about IM so good luck!

Focus on one of these methods and do it well. I said one of the fastest ways to get traffic is put a bunch of videos out on you tube. Make sure that your VIDEO SEO is really good, and it will be easy to rank your vids for both you tube and google. A double whammy!!

Make sure that you have a powerful call to action that takes them off of you tube to your site where you capture their lead.

When your site has just been launched it will be more suitable for you to work on social media to get the instant visitors. Blog commenting and forum posting are mainly used for the purpose of rankings getting traffic from them is there secondary usage. At the start you should focus more on developing your network on facebook and twitter. Getting high ranks on Google is time taking process and if it takes too long you will be getting no traffic.
When you will be able to made your loyal visitors successfully from the social networks than give your all attention to the SEO.

I was despairing that I wouldn't see this answer. :p

James is so right -- figure out exactly who your target audience is, and go where they are! Appeal to their sense of humour, and their sense of "scam versus legit".

A flash game website would have very different demographics than an MMORPG based on pretty naked women...

      --Male or female?
      --Age?

      --What country/region?
--What else are they interested in?

All I can say is there are three ways to generate traffic.
1.) Do what other people tell you to do from this post or
2.) Just keep building quality links from different websites (choose only the one relevant to your niche). If you can build links up to more than a thousand you will see some results. The only downside you may not rank well in the SERP's or
3.) Buy Ad space from Blogsitess. Normally you pay between $5-$1000 a month. But the usual price is around $10-$25 a month. (BuySellAds.com).

I gotta agree with allenjohn- press releases get ridiculous amounts of views, even without much SEO involved.

So if you write 2 PRs a day, and each gets 150-200 views with a 20% ctr, you're looking at 60-80 visitors a day.

Not shabby for 1-2 hours of work.

There's a ton of free ways to get a lil traffic here and a lil traffic there. But the bottom line is that you have TO PAY TO PLAY! That's right, time to empty out that bank account and invest in your business idea!

Sell stuff, work part-time, do whatever you have to do to raise the capital to get a solid marketing strategy in place.

An online business is a REAL BUSINESS and you're going to need some working capital. But until you get the cash, just continue to use all the free ways which are:

    Blogging
    Posting on other peoples blogs
    Twitter
    Facebook
    ect...

That's what im doing for now...

This will get people familiar with you Brand, and then when you have your marketing budget together...BOOM! You can send a couple hundred thousand targeted people to your site, and if you have a good product, the word will spread.

I actually have a business..plan..I'm still working out the kinks, but I'm going to launch it on full scale soon.

I think you need to provide more details in order to get good answers - not that the suggestions so far a necessarily bad, but if you don't mention the PURPOSE of your site then you'll simply get too many answers many of which may not be particularly useful for your business.

For example, does it focus on

      - selling games
      - reviewing games
      - is it a tool or service

      And so on..

And before going crazy with traffic strategies, has anyone even evaluated your site? Maybe there is room for improvement, so the traffic strategies you do apply will become more effective.

I'd suggest you post a link, or at least explain what your site does first.

Dude , I really like your question

How Can I get More Traffic ?

That is a great question to ask .

Since I am a creative person , I can come up with some answers that might be useful to you

    So , there you go

    1. Pay for It: By far the fastest way to get traffic when you know that your offer converts . if you do not know what you are doing , you want to stay way for a while . That said , the fastest way to get more traffic is to Pay for it . Anyone fool with some money can get traffic .

    2. Team Up with People that have the traffic : This is what I do with Youtube, the third most visited website at the time of this post . Of course , you got to do it the right way otherwise you get very little traffic

      You can do SEO

You have to know which keyword you're focusing your efforts on. This should not be overly competitive, because if it is your efforts would seem like are amounting to nil.

Then you would promote your site with your primary keyword as the anchor text.

I would suggest that you go to google and search for free reports on SEO to understand how the whole thing works.

I am in pretty good position to answer this because I also just started a site. Worked very hard at posting articles....the traffic increased slowly. Then I posted an article that was largely unrelated to my site (but was a major current event)...and boom over 50,000 visited my site in two days. Now that kind of thing is not sustainable but it did teach me a few lessons.

      1) Give the people what they want instead of giving them what you want.
      2) Social Media sites like facebook are incredibly powerful as it was largely responsible for ranking high in google.
      3) Don't under-value alt text in your pictures. What brought in most of that 50,000 was a picture i put up and used my website name as the alt text.
      4) check out your competition. See how their site looks. Maybe take what you like from those sites and improve it.

The one area i am incredibly weak in is Twitter. I don't know where to start really...it seems already so over saturated with everyone who wants or is famous. It must be powerful program or so many people wouldnt have thousands of tweets....i mean really? do people really have that much to say? but i need to bite the bullet and join the rank and file and learn twitter at some point. I am checking out tweetadder which hopefully makes my life easier in learning the in and outs of twitter

you have had some great advice but what you must first do is get yourself a signature with your web address on it. People will then be able to look at what you do etc. I could potentially be one of your best customers or know someone who might be....but I dont know your web address.
Everytime you use the forum you are also advertising your services. The bonus is its free and you will get a lot of people seeing your web address. If you post regularly with good content you will generate good traffic to your site as long as you do it consistently

The way I see it, making money online is like gardening. Before planting the fruit tree, you need to test the soil and seeds quality (keyword and niche research), plant the seeds (build blogs or sites) and then water them everyday. (driving traffic to your sites by article marketing, classified advertising, email marketing, forum posting, social bookmarking / networking and video marketing.

Quite skeptical of outsourcing due to bad experiences and more open to automation.

Even as I wrote this I am currently experimenting and testing my new software for current IM campaigns. It's an extremely powerful tool that you can do your whole project from keyword research all the way to driving traffic to your sites via the strategies I outlined above.

    Some good tips:
    Forum marketing
    Writing content
    Article submission
    Social Marketing

Writing content for your site is great but it will take a long time to make a dent in your page rank.

Try article marketing. You can take some of your same content and distribute it to the right article submission sites. Of course you will have your backlinks either in the article or your bio. Soon your article will be around the web with a variety of content related backlinks to your site.

Traffic exchanges can be effective as well.
    Social networking
The list goes on, but all can be done at zero of little cost.

The very first thing you need to do is make sure your site is SEO friendly. If your using wordpress for your sites I would highly recommend the plugin easywpseo which is great for ensuring your pages are highly optimized.

My second advise would be content. For this I outsource and it doesn't break the bank. I use a service called SEOGenerals which I have been very happy with. I build review sites so pick 3 keywords: 1)product name 2&3) two high competition keywords and have them write a 4-500 word review on the product using those 3 factors with 3-4% keyword density.

Thirdly, I use a service called linkpushing.net to promote my sites. They have different packages depending on your budget and once again doesn't cost much for their low end pushes. The great thing about their service is that it doesn't blast your site in 24-48 hour period but builds the links overtime for which ever keywords you choose.

Fourth, I'll blast my page after a couple of weeks using some of the services from here for EDU and GOV links and profile pyramids. At no time though will I have my links pinged as I prefer the search engines to find them naturally.

I'll do that for every page of my site as it's written and posted, this way fresh content is always being added and backlinks to the url and the search engines will see your not trying to spam your link all over the place. Over time it'll help improve your rankings and drive traffic to your site. Once your site starts to make money and has aged a little, you can up the promotion to higher end backlinks. Some people who have domains which have aged will blast 100k of links over a short period of time to help improve their rankings.

Even though none of the above is free, it doesn't break the bank. You can have a 400 word article written for as little as $4, 5 link pushes per month will cost you $67 and you can have edu/gov blasts for as little as $10-20, as I stated, it won't break the bank.

easywpseo will cost you $37 on warrior forum and you can use it on unlimited websites you own and I feel is essential if your want to ensure your websites are fully optimized.

I have had some success with OnlyWire. You can get a free demo from OnlyWire.com and it is good for about 200 impressions - then about $10 a month.

If you use OnlyWire along with blog SEO, posting on other blogs, comments, you will see your traffic begin to build. Don't let the time get away from you. In order for OnlyWire - or blogging for that matter - you must absolutely must post fresh and original content.

I strongly argue against repurpose articles and the like. Spend a little time in research. The suggestion about Google Alerts was very good.

In a short time you will have a list of topics. When you click thru to the topic - be sure to get the URL and use it at least once in your article as a reference. For example: A recent article in StarWeek.com (then put the hyper link behind it).

Another place for original material is Wikapida. That site has links upon links with more information. With any personal experience at all most folks should be able to build a great series on a whole group of topics.

I recently wrote a series on the growing market of baby boomers. We used references to Vance Packard and Elvis to describe that market's mind set and background. I thought it was useful information - and all original to my blog.

Hope these thoughts are useful to you. If you stop by my blog and leave a comment, I will respond. We may be able to help each other over the long term.

    Cheers !

    Sylent,

All of the various ways mentioned here will get you traffic, and you should certainly investigate every one of them to see if they are right for you.

However there is one way that you can generate a very large surge of traffic right now - now let me mention that it may be traffic that is mostly "curiosity seekers" and not real conversion - but sometimes that can have a multiplier effect, and lead to quality traffic down the line.

Get something nobody else has. The video marketing niche is a huge attractor here, and if you can get a unique, funny, and short little video, or a picture nobody else has of a celebrity, or anything controversial - then you can get a quick and massive traffic boost, but again... this may not be very targeted traffic and may not really help you sell much.

A couple of things that a massive traffic boost does do is improve your confidence, increase your overall SEO rankings, and it also helps test your site under real loads - all good things.

Ultimately though, you want traffic that converts to real sales - so look at this "booster" traffic as a way to help position yourself, and then use the other techniques here to slowly and steadily build that traffic.

    Good Luck!

My 2bobs worth is do more work and then some more work and then some more work that is write posts every day from the 50 odd keywords that you have found with the google keyword tool.

Make sure you have at least 8 pages that are keyword optimized as well. It just takes work like anything.

Like others have said grab James Schramkos traffic course and keep learning. This can take some time to all kick into gear before the traffic starts flowing.

Next question after that is when it comes (the traffic) what are going to do with it. Hope you are you building a list.....Best or luck with it.

Did you use any keyword tool prior to setting up your website and are your phrases in your title tags? If your main keywords are highly competitive then, you'll get little organic traffic to your site and time and again I see people with great websites, but they've chosen the wrong keywords.

Ok, you got your site up. Now it's time for some traffic generation. Here's a strategy I paid for to learn.

Do what others aren't doing. Here's what I mean.

Here's how the typical internet marketer thinks. Do keyword research and look for decent traffic (usually people think 3000 visitors a day is worth their time and effort) keywords and low competition. Then, they do their thing i.e. build back links from related sites, on page SEO, etc.

Usually, no one wants to go for a keyword that only has a 100 visitors a month, right? I mean, it's not worth it. This is where you think differently.

Instead of busting your butt trying to rank for that higher traffic keyword that has a little more competition, go for the low traffic keyword ONLY IF it's EASY to rank for.

You will get ranked FASTER and you can move on to the next related "easy to rank for" keyword.

You are catching a little traffic from here and there, from different angles.

As a bonus, Google likes related keywords back links (aka Latent Semantic Indexing).

So, instead of just creating 100 back links with the exact keyword, diversify your back links (Google keeps a profile on your site from what I learned).

Again, this is not my theory. It's information I am paying for.

    Good luck with your campaigns!

You are better of targeting shorter phrases that actually get
search volume since you will pick up the long tails ANYWAY...

Hmmmm. If that is working for you then I can't say otherwise. I guess there IS more than one way to skin a cat.

StumbleUpon is awesome for traffic. Just share new content on your site and share content of other sites to give back to the community and good things will happen in regards to traffic.

OK Warriors, here's a strategy I learned (and had to pay for) so I think you'll like it.

The hardest part is finding connections but once you do, you can get targeted traffic at will.

Search out list owners that write to your targeted niche. Offer to write unique content for their subscribers in exchange for putting a link back to your site.

If that list owner hates to write he/she will take your offer because they are probably monetizing their newsletter w/ paid ads.

    That's it!

Find a site in your niche and see if they offer free newsletters. Check out the page if it says something like "Subscribe To Our Free Newsletter With Over 10,000 Subscribers" so you have a little idea of how much potential targeted readers will see your article/link to your site.

Now, not all the subscribers will open the email but it's faster than trying to get a page on #1 in Google.

    Hope this helps!

Are you trying to drive traffic with organic search? Or are you just trying to drive targeted traffic from anywhere?

Organic search takes a lot of time and patience. You have to build a lot of authority links to even start ranking for your keywords. Even for the most simple of keywords with practically no competition.

Backlinks from high-ranking sites pretty much "vouch" for your website as far as search engines care. The more links from high ranking, RELEVANT sites to your niche, the better you will stand in SERPs.

This is the most vital key I have ever learned in IM: Pick a traffic driving method you enjoy and LEARN and APPLY every single thing possible to increase your ranking or get more traffic to whatever your type of promotion is. I'm currently learning everything there is possible for getting my videos ranked. Perhaps you should try the same thing for article marketing or getting your website ranked for a low competition keyword.

Article marketing and blogging marketing. You can also do them in an automated way such as write an article and automatically submit it to 100s of article sites.
