What I *Wish* I Knew About Internet Marketing Years Ago...

Hey everyone,

I've been in the IM world for years now, and there are certain things that I wish I would have known when I was first starting out...

It would have saved me thousands of dollars, kept me focused on what's truly important, and put a lot more money in my pocket...

So, whether you are are "green" to the internet marketing world or are an experienced veteran I think you'll be able to benefit from this list of ideas...
  1. Be able to live inside the mind of the customer. Be able to feel what they are feeling and think what they are thinking. If you get this, you immediately are in the top .1% of business people in the world.
  2. Understand the "Lifetime Value" of a customer. Don't worry about making money on the front end, focus on building up a list of people that know, like, and trust you. Even better, build up a list of buyers (or segment your list into buyers and non-buyers). Remember that "the purpose of a business is to create and keep a customer."
  3. Forget your own needs, and focus entirely on giving as much value to your customer as possible. Be their "trusted advisor" and help them get what they want (or what they think they want) most. Trust is more important than anything.
  4. First ask, "How can I give more value?" STOP thinking, "How can I trick people into giving me money?" And always remember, those that can delay instant gratification are those that will end up better off in the long run.
  5. Even if you don't have the resources to accomplish your goal, someone else has excess capacity -- so JV with them and pay entirely on performance. In fact, whenever you can pay out of profits, you will generally get a better end result compared to paying someone a flat fee.
  6. Always measure, monitor, and test what you do. If you don't have one finger on the pulse of "key metrics" you are flying blind and potentially leaving millions of dollars on the table.
  7. Balance learning and taking action. Here's a simple forumula that I always have in the back of my head. 1 Hours Learning: 3 Hours Implementation. At minimum you should be spending 3 hours implementing (taking action) on everything you learn. This is especially helpful with WSO's...
  8. Develop your focus. This is perhaps the most valuable skill you can possess, because if you are unfocused, you will almost always fail - regardless of how great your initial strategy is. Work in blocks of uninterrupted time. Then take uninterrupted blocks of time to relax. Make sure you don't have "too many balls in the air at once", and focus on bringing new projects to completion, rather than trying to find the next way to make money online. Try not to get distracted by every shiny new object (and hide your walllet when you are in the WSO section!)
  9. Systemize your business. Determine the absolute best way to accomplish something, then put it on paper in a 1-2-3 format. Then, when you have the funds available, outsource these tasks and focus on the higher dollar-per-hour tasks of your business.
  10. Become connected with influential people. Never underestimate the power of reaching out and introducing yourself. Something as simple as, "Hi Joe Blow, I just wanted to reach out and introduce myself. My name is ______. Talk soon." has the potential to start a long, profitable, beneficial relationship. And remember, always give value first.
  11. Remember to have a life outside of Internet Marketing. This may seem obvious, but it's easy to get addicted to the feeling of making money. I'll never forget the first time I made a sale. It was exhilirating. I quickly became addicted and sacrificed my health and relationships. Don't make this mistake. Money is not why you should be marketing, you should be in it to help as many people as possible.

I hope you enjoyed this. Now get out there and kick some ass.

I like tip #9 the very best.

The rest of it is good advice, though! Practical, solid, evergreen stuff that people need to focus on.

Unfortunately, many newbies get taken in by the "latest, never been seen, easy" methods of making money and forget the basics like these.

I wish I knew to be patient. I gave up on a lot of sites after 2-3 months that would have been real successful after a couple years.

Me too. I know that I was about 2 weeks away from seeing a real breakthrough.

In my own experience, it takes at least 60 days to really see progress (especially if you are focusing on SEO).

So true, its amazing how changing your focus can bring about massive change. If we stop thinking about how to change a persons mind and instead focus on whats on their mind in the first place we satisfy more and create less work for ourselves.

    Great point!!

      I totally agree.

And, most people think "it can't be that easy." But...it is.

Give away so much value that people think they are taking advantage of you...

Get the "short end of the stick" millions of times over and over. Build up a reputation of being the person that over delivers on value. And when in doubt add even more value.

      Definitely.

I sort of included that with systemization. In my experience it's near impossible to have a "4 hour work week" without systemizing what you need outsourced, before you actually outsource the work.

I still do not see why people do not build a list. no matter what it is you are selling.

Once you do this, you may end up with a buying customer for life. Just think of the power in that for a second. How can having a list hurt your business ...it cant.

Since doing this my whole business and profits skyrocketed.
