Hey, another complete noob here seeking for advice and help. Okay, so I'm just about to create a Squidoo page as I have read somewhere that it was the easiest place to start and to try to get the hang of things. Until i stumbled across this "What's your page going to be about?" Could someone please shred some light on how i can research a market and decide what to base my page around, so i can get a decent amount of trafic coming to page but not so i have chosen something which everyone is doing at the moment.. if you understand what i'm trying to say

Probably the cheapest and easiest way to see what search volumes you can possibly achieve is by going to the Google external keyword tool. From there just punch in your term and click go.

Once you get the results look down the left hand side of the page, remove the tick from broad and add one into exact.

From here, take the terms that have appeared, open Google, enter your term surrounded by quotes then check how many search results you get. The lower the better and if you are just starting our try to find competition under 50000.

Once you have that and written your keyword rich article then start to throw backlinks at it slowly for a month then hit it harder after that. You should then start to see your lens start to climb the search engines.

Hubpages and Infobarrel are also worth looking at. You can share revenue with them and create links to your site or your affiliate products.

    Good luck

Instead of looking at the number of competing sites. I look at the results in the top ten. If I see large authority sites, I know it will be usually be harder than if I see article directories etc. to rank.

To choose a topic, it helps to pick something you are interested in. Then do some research to measure the competition.

I find Hubpages to be a lot easier to work with than Squidoo.

It sounds like you would benefit from taking a course to help you get started. There are plenty of good ones out there, including a few free ones. It may save you a lot of time if you get some training to help you get started.

Thanks for the information, i think i might follow your advice and start on Hubpages.

I want to do this for a while see if it all works out and then ultimately, try to move on to bigger, better things which will obviously increase the amount i would be earning, since it will be very little I'm guessing from HubPages.

Right, I'm back again with more questions! So for an example, lets say i wanted to create a lens on Squidoo about 'really funny videos' being the market with 'low' competition of 46,300 results coming back.

After i created that 'lens' i would release two videos a day and blog about them etc. What would i then have to do after i established my lens to get more traffic?

Use websites suchas; Digg, Reddit and others like these?

Please correct me if any of this is wrong as I am very much a noob.

  • This just made me smile. I'm going to create content... but hmmm... what should I write about.

    Sounds like a plan.

Before you build you mighty site/page you might want to learn a bit about keyword research and marketing in General.

Build it and they will come doesn't work.

Pick a product or service you know something about.

Lets say you are a MLB fan and watch a lot of games.

Brainstorm a list of things you could talk or write about. Maybe it's a player, or a city, or materials used to make bats, or baseball history, or whatever.

Now write all those words down.
Then go to Google Keyword Tool and type them in.

Build yourself some lists of words. See how competitive they are. See if there are advertisers for those keywords by typing them into Google and looking for Ads.

Now pick a few phrases and determine if you can write about them.
Are these phrases selling a product or just about finding information.

Pick one that sells a product.

Now you are closer to being ready to write something that might have commercial value and make you some money.

Always find your market and work backwards.

If you think you can create an article and magically go find traffic for the article and make money... well then you can join the 98% of others who fail over and over and over.

I don't have time to fail so I never start a project until I know it has a good chance of succeeding.

But that's just me, I like to make money and not waste time.

Hubpages is a good place to start, but they got slammed hard by the Farmers update and they are being pretty anal about what you can and can't post lately. But I still prefer them over Squidoo.

My strategy with Hubpages has little to do with anything other than adsense, and creating content that will rank high enough to allow links to be dofollow and linked out. It's also not too bad a place to test affiliate offers - but do one offer per article.

And if you plan on being successful on Hubpages you'll need to invest some time joining the community and participating. One off artists just get voted down and never make it.

I recommend doing a lot of different things at first. Throw a lot of junk at the wall, and see what sticks longest.

A lot of blogs will lead you to believe that you need passion for any project you set out to complete. If you don't have a passion, I believe you only need the amount of passion to know that you will complete one project.

I started with little passion in any one thing, but I have thrown enough stuff at "the wall" to know what I should be doing.

Having said that, squidoo is a good place to start, but it won't be the place you end up, so keep your eyes open. The best advice I can give you is to never give up; even if things look bleak, opportunity is all around you.

Hey there I have been building small niche websites and been doing well I think so at least. But I agree with the guy that says you must research your niche first and then get a list of keywords going as this will help you to decide and filter thru the tire kickers. (the ones that are ready to buy and the ones that are not)

For example someone who is typing in ipad2 may be just looking for any numerous amounts of info on an ipad. But now when you narrow that down to someone looking for ipad2 screen size or ipad2 specifications you are now getting closer to a buyer than a drifter Hope this helped at all

Hey B3som, congrats on having some initiative.

The first important thing to do in terms of traffic generation is pick good keywords. Low competition is important, but make sure the terms are actively searched and have a pay day attached to them.

If you're using HubPages, you make money (primarily) through AdSense and Amazon. What related Amazon products can you place in your Hubs? Think higher ticket items if possible. What types of AdSense ads will display in your Hubs? Think big paying keywords, which you can check out in the AdWords keyword tool or Google Traffic Estimator. A CPC > $1/click is a good start, but you can find BIG paying keywords, in the realms of $10+ a click... now we're really talking. Specialize your content so it has the best chance of displaying these high paying AdSense ads.

Making a hub on a topic with beatable competition (e.g. top 5 Google results are NOT high authority sites) is a good start to place highly in Google very quickly. After that, I sincerely don't do much to send traffic to my hubs. The HubPages community in itself is pretty active, so participate in it. Answer relevant questions and comment on other hubs.

Then, share your Hub on relevant other sites, such as forums or other communities dedicated to your niche. If you're still looking for more after this, then, well, backlink and write other hubs articles that point to yours. Good luck.

While many people tend to go for keywords that have 3k + searches per month I would recommend you to take a look at the ones who have a few hundreds too.

I have made more money by targeting keywords that have 300-500 searches per month rather than the ones who have thousands.

People think that those keywords don`t deserve targeting since the low volume of searches but even if the keywords has 200 searches per month those 200 people are the buyers (considering you had a buyer keyword).

      I hope this helps you

Thanks everyone for all your advice, I plan to start searching keywords later tonite and hopefully in the early hours of the following morning I might have a pretty start to a decent of keywords. However this is after I find some guides on some basic requirements I think I may need.

An update tomorrow will most likely happen, more questions may be even sooner haha.

      Thanks all.

Well from reading your first post I got the impression your kind of looking for a niche that's not swapped with other marketers.

If your having trouble trying coming up with a niche I would say you can try two things to start off with. If you don't want to spend any cash go to amazon and have a look through different books categories in the "how to" or something along those lines and keep digging... see how deep the rabbit hole goes. Make notes etc and try some of the other big retail sites.

If you want to take a shortcut, invest some cash in some of the wso's on niches and keywords. There are some good ones that will give you some good ideas of niches that are less competitive.

clickbank can be another place to research.

Then start to look at the traffic, use the keyword tool but always check the top three sites on the first page as mentioned above. The keyword tool gives you a good idea of HOW many people are fighting in the ring with you... but you also want to know how BIG those guys in the ring are.

There could be 100 people in the ring, but if they are all 10 year olds playing around you know your going to be the winner. if the 100 guys turn out to be 100pound wrestlers your going to have a real fight to come out on top.

I kind of find Squidoo a real pain, but if you want to give it a shot then go for it.

I recommend promoting physical Amazon products in the $75-$200 range. Just go to Amazon and start looking for bestsellers in different categories and see what you can come up with.

Internet Marketing IQ is spot on! You should brainstorm a list of topics that you have strong expertise, strong opinions, or just have an extreme interest in. Then research the keywords and see what kind of traffic they generate using the google keyword research tool. There is nothing more powerful than writing about something you actually believe in.
