I'm shot thanks to 1and1

Today has been quite a rough day.
Liquidweb informed me that I needed to register name servers with My domain registar to use my dedicated server.

I went over to 1and1 to find that there was no option for this in their control panel so I had to call in. The first tech was literally like
"erm...yeah...what. We don't handle that let me see if i can get you to someone who might know"
*hold for 3 minutes*
*Guy with strong accent and clearly unable to speak full sentences comes on*
After 10 minutes of broken record repeating himself telling me to just put my nameservers in the slot and me telling him I want to REGISTER nameservers NOT simply point a domain to them he finally said he could not do it and transferred me again.
*hold*
*3rd tech comes on*
*muffle sound*
I say hello?
"Erm...uh Hello?"
more muffle sounds and I repeat hello over and over and no reply and then he hangs up.

So liquidweb heroic support tells me I've got to do a transfer and I agree. I head on over to godaddy to find out via their tech support that My domain needs to be 60 days old to transfer.

And so in short, now here I am and my plans are pretty shot all cause I bought a domain from 1and1. In my opinion they should not be able to register domains period. This sucks.

I think my only option now is to register a .net until May 17th. I don't even know actually. This blows.

I actually stopped using 1and1 many years ago
after an incident with one of my domains. After
many years, they still haven't received a single
    dollar from me.

Same here, after an incident with a domain I wouldn't trust them with anything or send a penny their direction.

It's actually quite easy. Find out what the name servers are at Liquidweb then go over to your registar and there should be a place to place them in there so they point to Liquidwebs hosting.

You don't need to transfer anything. What are Liquidwebs nameservers? That's the first thing you need to find out. When you've done that, simply go to your registar and there should be a place there for changing the nameserver from the registar to Liquidweb.

That's not what the problem is. Warhero wants to REGISTER a set of name servers, which is an entirely different thing than placing a hosts name servers in your domain registration.

I couldn't find anything quick that might help but try to call them back until you get a competant tech. You're wanting to register CUSTOM NS, not just change yours. if all else fails you should be able to adjust A-record/cname/mx to mirror the zone records of your server anyway

edit: BTW, ignore anything that says to add some ns1 or ns2 cnames. that's just NOT how DNS works to do what you're asking

How about using a different domain name with a different registrar? Set up the nameservers using a registrar which allows you to do it. Then just change the nameservers to point to the one's you just made. It doesn't matter if they are created on the same domain or not - all that matters is that they point to the right IP's.

Can anyone verify if this is the heroic solution that I'm looking for?

So if this is done, it will be as if nothing was ever wrong no set backs, everything 100% working perfect?

This is the correct process. Nobody can promise you "no setbacks" or "perfect". I can tell you how to drive a car properly, but I can't promise you there will be no accidents.

Just find a domain registrar that allows you to create your own nameservers. Register any domain with them (not even sure if you're required to do that, but you want to show you're a paying customer, I guess). Ask them to create the nameservers you wish. You can name them anything you'd like, it doesn't matter (in fact, you can name them to match the domain at the registrar that is not cooperating). For example, you could name them ns1.warhero.com and ns2.warhero.com. As Gary said, the only thing that matters it the correct IP address.

Yep. You need name servers of your own, for whatever reason, they can be on any domain. I used one set of private name servers for all of my domains forever.

Other than being a bit slow, 1and1 ain't that bad and they are very cheap and simple.

You should be able to log in to your account at admin.1and1.com, pick your domain then click the DNS tab. From there, you can enger your Name Server, IP Address (A-Record) and Mail Server (MX Record). By default, they all point to 1and1 resources, but they can easily be changed.

Is that what you're lookin? to do?

I just posted a thread in programming folder about my difficulty in using 1nad 1 cpanel.. the best option is to register domain at namecheap and host your site somewhere like hostgator or x10hosting with standard cpanel...

      Agreed.

1&1 are a frankly backwards company with a disastrous control panel.

But the link in my above post should allow the OP to be successful in setting up a glue record, which is the same thing as "registering a nameserver".

The problem is that 1&1 don't exactly make this stuff self-explanatory like many registrars do, and I believe it'll only work if your nameservers begin with nsX.yourdomain.com (i.e. you don't get to choose whether it's dns1 & dns2.yourdomain.com, or something similar - it has to be ns/ns1/ns2, etc.).

A quick Google will allow you to verify that these instructions have worked for many others with the same issue, in the past.

The OP should at least give it a try before starting again with another domain elsewhere - especially if it means opting for an inferior / second-best domain.

Maybe transfer the Domain over to Domainsite rather than GoDaddy or does it need to be at least 60 days old everywhere? I'm sure I've done it earlier on Domainsite.

Perhaps 9 out of ten times, CUSTOMERS register there, and the customers only need THEIR DNS. So the DNS servers often DEFAULT. They probably either didn't figure on this, or you got some package that didn't allow it.

The 1 & 1 control panel can be quite confusing. Namecheap is the best registrar around. Better to use them .

1and1 sucks. I'd transfer out of there as soon as possible, even if you figure out a workaround.

    This is interesting...

I don't have an answer to the initial question but, I used 1and1 for 6 years and was very satisfied with them.
My experience with their customer support was excellent.
Their domains were in line with other registrars. In fact, they only
charge 99 cents for a .info.
    The reason I changed was;
    1. I now build all my sites on Wordpress and through cpanel
    WP installs in seconds.
    2. I got hosting @ 3.50 P/Y and locked it in for 3 years.
    3. With my current host a new domain is ready within minutes as
opposed to the 12 - 24 hours with other hosting companys.

1and1 in my opinion are a bunch of scam artists. When they first launched the company they were giving free domain names. After 2 years they decided to bill me a crazy dollar amount for that one domain I got free as a special promotion. When I called the guy was yelling at me telling me "Chalk it up to a lesson learned". They made millions of dollars doing that to a lot of people. Ever since then I stayed away from them. I see they haven't improved their business practices any.

Here is 1and1.com's faq on changing to your own nameserver

1&1 Webhosting FAQ | How do I use my own name server for a 1&1 domain?

.... you can set ns1.yourdomain.com and ns2.yourdomain.com - but I have a feeling you'll have to configure the IP address as well if you're not hosting with 1and1.com

    Hope that helps.

    M

ps it might take a few hours for the domain nameservers to propagate properly.

Integrity Marketer would not recommend using 1and1 in any instance, or in any case - and in fact, we've had our own disastrous dealings with them. We've found that complaints about them far outweigh all other registrars and it's best that Internet marketers choose someone else to register with.
