If 7 is so great why do sites like Amazon.com: Online Shopping for Electronics, Apparel, Computers, Books, DVDs & more
and HSN Official Site | Online Shopping at HSN.com | Shopping Online NOT use 7....

In fact there are hardly ANY mainstream big budget
SPLIT TESTED massive ad campaigns that use 7's

IMHO everyone is blindly following without testing
or questioning it...

I tested - and guess what. It was not the winner.
For my new stuff 7 is not in the mix.

It has been statistically shown that if you ask people to pick a number between 1 and 10 they will pick 7 more often than any other number. There's a few papers floating around in this regard.

7 stimulates the brain in a unique way from the other numbers. Another such kind of number would be 3. It was proven in some study, but i'm kind of lazy to find it now.

In my opinion, 7 would be a number that is neither 5 nor 10, so it's kind of half way in the middle, which gives the human being a sense of choice and better sense of comfort. For example, most people sell products at 0.99, instead of 1.00, because it gives a better comfort to the buyer, and might soothe the customer to actually take on the sale.

I use 7 a lot. I think the reason you don't see it offline as much as they would have to round down to 5c (or 5p), OR carry a LOT of change.

you hit the nail there. people don't 7 cent coins so large companies use 5 instead. never thought of that myself. but 7 does seem to appeal a lot more than any other number. if only the dumb large corporations known how to market.

As for prices ending in 7, more often than not, in real markets prices ending in 7 actually don't perform that well.

May be in some markets like IM, prices ending in 7 actually do perform better, but that's probably more the fact that that's what the market is used to. It would almost be pretty weird now if you saw an IM product that didn't have a price ending in 7... then you stop and think about it.

For the majority of other markets out there, sellers that end their prices with a 7 simply do so because they're falsely led to believe that 7 will always have the best response. They don't test.

If they were to test they'd probably realise they were leaving a perfectly good $2.95 on the table for every sale. That's what it all comes down to at the end of the day: testing.

my testing shows that on Virtual marketplaces prices ending in 7 always outperforms prices ending in .88 or .99
It always has since 2006 from eBay to Amazon and so forth.

but you do bring forth a good point. In a live market, 7 would probably not outperform numbers ending in .95 simply because the vast majority aren't used to it. I wouldn't being paying 1.87 for a bottle of soda. my natural reaction for the norm would be 1.95.

Psychologically 97 does look cheaper than 99, but maybe in people's subconscious they really do see a lucky 7 which makes them feel more comfortable about buying.
