Need Ideas On How To Monetize This Site!

So I have this site about hairstyles, more specifically about people looking for hairstyles who have a certain face shape. Up to about 400-500 visitors per day now, and growing...all organic from Google.

It was started a while ago in attempts to cross-sell a product I have (beauty product) but it is not working very well.

Any ideas on how I can monetize this site? I don't really want to throw adsense up. I'm thinking hair and hairstyling product reviews? That's pretty unoriginal though, so I'm hoping you guys can throw out some ideas.

Right now the content on the site is decent, not great, so I'm trying to improve on that. Basically it has alot of before/after pics of people in different styles and step by step instructions on how to achieve that style.

Any thoughts from you guys?

Bill

Have you ever thought about looking into an e-commerce type site? Or possibly joining amazon affiliate program to see what they got for hair products?

My best advice is to test. Even though you don't want to do addenda, test it. If it's making the most money stick with it. Just test all your options and mix and match and see what returns the most income.

      Hi Bill,

Rather than putting adsense up why don't you approach/send your website statistics (which are obviously very good) directly to advertisers?

Namely hair saloons/hair dressers who could fulfill your website visitors needs (i.e. these people looking for that certain hairstyle).

Yes, a bit more effort as you would need to present your website statistics as a package to potential advertisers and clearly prove to them you could direct them very targeted clients.

However, once you prove it to them and they are happy with your website you can charge them a monthly fee to advertise and take 100% cut for yourself and not the tiny amount you get with adsense!

      Just an idea.

      I'm sure there are others.

      Goodluck Bill. :p

Yes you are right testing is key. I already am a member of the amazon affiliate program, that was where I was looking to promote products from. Instead of just a run-of-the-mill review/e-commerce section I am trying to think of a unique way to present the products, if I do so

I was thinking of doing this, but instead approaching other hair and hairstyling WEBSITES to offer them ads on my site. Not sure how much interest a hairdresser or salon would have in my site, as my site is not location-specific if you know what I mean.

For example, if I approached some salon in California, I couldn't tell them that my visitors are all living in their area. Know what I mean? Otherwise I'm not sure of the benefit they would get out of it.

If I did approach other websites, I wanted to wait until I got more traffic, at least 1000/day.

        Thanks for your feedback!

          Bill,

I've found there are very few sites that can't be monetized in some way, if the traffic is decent.

One tip that works for me is to visit a local large newsagent/bookstore and browse through the specialty magazines on the topic to see what's being advertised.

I can usually get some great ideas for related affiliate products and/or what other kind of advertisers I could approach.

I think there's a "custom hairstyle" program out there that allows a customer to upload their face and see how they look with different hairstyles. I've seen several versions, and I bet at least one has an affiliate option, because there's a fee for some of them.

People who are interested in the perfect hair are also probably interested in more general fashion and beauty tips, getting the perfect outfit for their body shape, etc.

What are the demographics of your site visitors? Once you answer that question, you'll have a better idea about their cross-niche interests.

You can put up an ad at buysellads.com

They have resonably priced targeted traffic and charge on a CPM basis.

    Good Luck

There's many different approaches, do some research...

Check your site stats see what people are looking for on your site or when they search for your site

Then check out other sites that are promoting products for those terms, also look at the strategies they are actually using to promote the products.

Start there and continue testing with different offers and promotion models

Maybe you can provide a "add-on" feature that will allow users to send you pictures of their hair and you provide custom hairstyles. When you reply with their custom hairstyles include "recommended" hair products that you are trying to sell.

It could also depend on why people ar visiting your site. if they are looking for pictures of hair styles and not a specific product, then it could be that adsense might work the best.

Unless you are willing to write a review for how they get the hairstyle in each picture by using a specific product. That could work, but it might take some work and some research.

If you are getting that many uniques, you might be able to get a banner for a continuity program from a big name place like Sephora (that's just an example, i don't know if they have one).

That's a good amount of traffic though. You must be doing something very correctly.

App,app, app. If it hasn't been done already, have an app developed that takes a photo (the person would take the photo with their smartphone) and applies new hairstyles. People could walk into their stylist and show them the picture with the style they want. You could suggest certain products based on the style they choose.

Haha also doing *something* like this already, but currently it's just to build content. Nothing is being promoted as of yet.

Yes, I think approaching names like this is a great idea, going to look into this.

Regarding the traffic...it's all about keyword research and SEO my friend

  • This goes for those who want to have either thicker hair or longer hair: how about hair growth products?

    Hair thickening shampoos?

I've tried some, and they do work well (the shampoos).

Hair growing products I've heard can increase growth up to 25 percent but if you stop using balding begins again.

The product wasn't a pill, but rather something you rub into your scalp twice a day, can't remember the name.

    Think it was Procerin:

    What is Procerin?
Procerin is a relatively new product manufactured by Speedwinds Nutrition Inc. for those suffering from hair loss. It is a hair loss supplement, a blend of herbs, vitamins and minerals specially formulated to block production of DHT, the primary cause of hair loss in men. Procerin is an all-natural DHT inhibitor to use internally to stop hair loss and promote the regrowth of new hair.

Since Procerin is a non-prescription solution to hair loss, it's available without a prescription. The company claims an 88% success rate with Procerin.

Amongst that, people who care about their hairstyles and what suits them would most probably be into anything beauty related.

Cleansers, gel, and anything that improves your general look would be great too.

Time to get testing, you've got a lot to work with.

EDIT* I say hair growth because I know several people have wanted some of the hairstyles they've seen but either don't have enough hair, or their hair isn't thick enough to pull it off.

I agree either CPA or amazon physical related hair products would do very well. I would opt for amazon though since so many people are used to buying on this website where as cpa you gotta ideally send visitor to a presell page then the CPA offer as most when they up in a cpa page wont trust the site since they dont reguarly use it or have heard of them.

Amazon does well if even u make a sale on a non related hair product you still get the commission since they keep a cookie of the customer you send to their site, conversions are much better than CPA offer but it all comes down to Testing, testing whats that word im looking for oh yeh testing.

    Have Fun

I thought buysellads was just for tech sites. Did they change that?

I've used ShinyAds on sites that I didn't want to manage the direct sales myself for. They are newer, but the interface is pretty easy. People can add their banner ad and then you have the option to approve it. You can set your rates to whatever you want.

I also use OpenX, but you can actually integrate OpenX and ShinyAds if you want.

But as for affiliate products, you could have a list of products/tools that can be used to achieve the hair style. Kind of like InStyle magazine does for outfits. They show a a look, and then list all the buying details (store, price, web site, etc.) afterwards.

I read a report recently about a guy who was in the 'age regeneration' niche - or whatever it is called. Creams to make you look younger!

He put a simple autoresponder up on his site, giving away some skin care tips. At the end of the autoresponder series, he offered a product/service that would give the subscriber what they want.

For hair - before and after pictures are great as a give-away. People can take hem - either printed off, or on these fancy smart phones - to the hairdresser, and you can recommend products to help the person maintain their new style. Just an idea.

I agree that there are so many ways to monetize a site - but a really good way is to get people on a list.

What happens the next time they feel like a change? If you are already in contact with them, you can influence that change, and the AMAZON AFFILIATED PRODUCTS (or which ever affiliate you choose) to go with that new hair style.

I would also highly recommend putting some Adsense on the site for a few weeks - making sure the ads open in new windows so that the visitor can always return to your site.

Test different methods. but get them on a list ;-)
