Copyright Free Images?

I thought it would be pretty simple to find a website with copyright free images, but I can't find any. The ones I have seen so far, you either have to give crediblity to the source, or pay for it.

Can anybody recommend any websites with copyright free images?

I will always need to pay for images if you are to use them for anything business related.

The best ones are sxc.hu and morguefile.com. You will find some good quality pictures at those sites for free. You could also try getting photos from the public domain. They are free as well because the copyright has expired. They are usually located in older books. You can find a lot of them on Project Gutenberg - free ebooks online download for iPad, Kindle, Nook, Android, iPhone, iPod Touch, Sony Reader

You need to be living in the United States to use the public domain material though. Copyright laws are different in other countries.

      Have you considered Google Images?

Before you say "that's trespassing" do this:

      Go to Google Images

Click on "Advanced Image Search" (to the far right of the search box)

Near the bottom you will see "Usage Rights: return images that are..."

Click on the expanding box that says "not filtered by license"

Go down to "labeled for commercial reuse"

Then type in your keywords or phrase.

The search should return images that you can use commercially. I would suggest also checking with the image source if possible just to be sure that you are legal. You may have to attribute an image to the source in order to use it.

I just wanted to highlight this part as some people will gloss right over it and think they can use the advanced search without doing ANY due diligence.

        Good tip, though.

        All the best,

  • www.openclipart.org: 100% copy right free. use the images in any way you like!
    no credit required

www.morguefile.com: only restriction is you cant sell the pictures as is. for example, you cant just save the picture and put it on CD to sell. you can how ever use the pictures for websites and so on. you dont have to give credit

stock.xchng - the leading free stock photography site : you can use the pictures for commerical use. how ever not all! do a advanced search to filter out the ones that dont require you to give credit. also dont use pictures of real people from it....you can get sued sometimes.

Free Photos and Textures : i emailed the owner of the site. he said you can use the images for commericial purposes, how ever if you can you should give him linkback but this is not neccesary.

Free Vectors - Download Free Vector Art! wned by photovaco so same rules apply

Even thought these websites don't require credit or link backs and attributions.
it is good courtesy to give it anyway if you are able to.

    Good luck!

Try NASA images. Like those are in the public domain and free to use. I believe for other government images that is also the case. Here are your tax dollars at work in a way we can see. I have found many of these images have a dark background if you know what we mean.

You can use my textures for free, even for commercial projects. You don't have to give credit to the source if you are absolutely can't, although I would really appreciate if you do.
    High Resolution Textures

However, they are NOT copyright free. Copyright free means that they belong to nobody (or to the public).

As has been mentioned, there are a ton of very good copyright-free images to be had. I use a lot of Creative Commons and public domain material, and have never had difficulty finding excellent quality images - even for very specific needs.

I should mention that extends beyond just graphics - there are loads of excellent apps, content, etc. both with Creative Commons licensing, and in the public domain.

Just a heads up, make sure you're careful with Google Image Search and Flickr. Both are a great source of free photos but most do require attribution...

Flickr creative commons is a good source, like a few have said above. I'm not a lawyer, but as far as attribution goes, most pictures just require a credit from the source. So if you were to put a box below the image in your blog or where ever you post the picture, with something like "courtesy of" that may work. But don't take my word for it.
