help with domain name choice

i want to know what difference a dash(-) makes in a domain name.

for e.g.
my site domain name is,,,,online-career.com, onlinecareer.com was already taken.
i just got a negative comment about the dash(-) in my domain name
which got me thinking a lot

would myonlinecareer.com rank better than online-career.com

It depends on your backlinks, there is no 'rule' about which domain will definitely rank better. - A couple of good backlinks on either domain will sway the rankings a lot more than a little dash

  • It doesn't make any difference as far as SEO, but most people would argue that potential customers frequently forget to include dashes when typing the url in their browser. Of course, there is no way to actually test whether this is true or not. I mean, how am I supposed to know how many customers I 'missed' because they didn't include the dash, if any?

I think it will only be matter if your keyword is searched in full , for example:myonlinecareer.com , your traffic will be less if people search this entire domain in adress bar..unless i think no problems ..it will depend upon your sites onpage seo..

Don't worry about the dash its all good. Just worry about the template and content. Ranking has nothing to do with the domain name according to Google's expert, Matt Cutts. It all has to do with content, content, content.

I think that having a dash makes it harder to get the type in traffic, but I do not think it will have much affect on your search engine rankings.

It's not really going to make a difference in terms of ranking your site, and there wouldn't really be a huge difference in type-in traffic (if at all), given that people seldom do this anymore, choosing to just do a search in Google instead.
