Anyone download Firefox 4 yet?

I saw a poor review of Firefox 4 here in the forum a while ago. I just updated my Firefox and was prompted to download Firefox 4. I was wondering what the consensus was for this upgrade?

I understand it has a new look, but I did not find any graphics to show me what it looked like (I didn't look too hard).

Just wondering if I should upgrade or not. Looking for advice.

    I as a habit run the latest versions of Firefox, IE, Chrome
    and Safari on my laptop.

    I like to be able to troubleshoot webpages, scripts, etc.
    in different browsers.... while testing products.

    I was a huge Firefox fan for the longest time, but became
    too much of a power user, and crashed it far too much. I
    do have the latest versions, and even run beta versions as
    soon as they are available, but I'm a Chrome convert too :-)

    I updated Ubuntu the other day and part of it was the Firefox update. I haven't notice any difference in performance but I like the new design changes.

    I'm keeping 3.6 until the Roboform issue is resolved. I should probably take another look at Chrome. Didn't like it the first time around.

    I have it and don't even see where its faster, really. It has some new cool buttons like, "paste and go" which I like, but I think FF is permanently suffering from feature overload.
    ...it's too bad, as it used to be my favorite :-(

      I generally have around 4-5 windows open, with around 50-70 tabs. I can tell you that starting FF4 up is significantly faster than the older versions.

      However, I still find FF crashes every second day or so. I'd move to Chrome if it supported all the plugins I like to use.

        Same here, I find FF 4 significantly faster and less prone to crashes. Also, when it crashes now, in many cases it's just isolated to the affected tab, and does not bring the whole browser down!

    I've found FF 4 to be significantly faster, especially in start up times, than FF 3.XX.

    The additional features like grouping of tabs and integration across all your devices are pretty nifty too.

    Well, I just opened up Firefox after restarting my computer
    and it was lightning fast when I opened it up this time. Often
    it's pretty slow opening and it usually crashes.

      True, but as with any browser update, plug-ins have to be updated, as well. Blame that on the plugin authors, not FF. Give them a few weeks. Heck, even WP plug-ins have to be updated with each new WP upgrade.

      I agree with you on both of those points, Paulie. The one thing I don't like, though, is the loss of my status bar.

      That's because they are using the plug-in container now to keep the plugins separate from the browser, because most crashes are caused by the plugins. That way if a plugin crashes it doesn't kill the whole browser, just the container, and then the container just re-starts itself. It works well, but it does use up a bit more memory and a few more power cycles, although certainly not enough to be concerned about.

      And when the heck is FF going to fix that annoying memory leak? It's an easy enough fix. Get on it, already, Mozilla!!!

        Bradley, the status bar is still there. I was the same the first time I downloaded it when it came out. "Where the heck is my status bar!? I need it for my addons!"

        Just hit "Ctrl+/" and it shows up. I actually like that they made it optional now. It pleases those who want the minimal interface but still there for whoever really used it. For me it's a must because I use the addon "Download Status Bar" - Imo this is a must if you download a lot of things like I do.

        As for the improvements, I must say, I was a Firefox user for a lot of years, even when Chrome came out. Then Firefox started to get a bit bloated and slow so I made the switch to Chrome and fell in love with it's minimalistic interface and how fast it was. On top of that if a tab crashed, you didn't have to stop working. Just close that tab and re-open it

        With Firefox 4, I've been really happy so far. I've been using it for a while now and made it my "default" browser again. It's faster than 3.xx in every sense. Although I gotta admit, Chrome still is a second or so faster at launching - ok, nitpicking now :p

        The addons I personally use have all been updated for this version so I think it'll continue being my go-to browser until Chrome does something cool to bring me back.

        I wonder when Microsoft is going to get their ish together and make IE at least a "respectable" browser. :rolleyes:

        I'd rather use Safari under Windows if I had to live without Firefox/Chrome.

      I switched about a month ago. Some plugins are not yet available, but I prefer it to 3.6. It's faster and the look is more user friendly. If I were you I would make the switch. I still don't know what all the hub-bub about Google Chrome is about. I used it for about a week and switched back to firefox.

    I think it is just fine though it falls short of high expectations...am both using Firefox and Chrome the only problem I have with Chrome is its getting crash a lot of times...i don't know how to fix it...

    If Chrome was more compatible with a wider variety of websites (I'm thinking here about all the internet banking websites I use) then it would be unbeatable. I prefer Firefox to IE but its always a bummer when a new release comes out waiting for plugin authors to update their tools... (Roboform)

      If you have a lot of plug-ins that you depend on, I would wait a bit longer, or at least check first to see if they are already compatible with FF4. If you don't use plug-ins, I would definitely make the switch.

    Actually, the interface are minimal, I think. Not that much different. I agree that an 'old interface' setting would be nice, though.

    I've started to auto-clear my history each time I log off now. So long as you have bookmarked your favourite sites then they will still auto-complete in the browser url bar.
    It is quite a bit faster. You'll really notice it on start-up. I'm not sure what clearing your history on shut down has to do with anything, but I clear my history and cache each time (same with Chrome), as well. Clearing the cache each time may speed it up a bit if it happens to bloated, but for the most part the cache should help page load time if you go to the same sites a lot. Personally, I've never noticed it loading any faster or slower whether my cache is empty or full.

        I just downloaded FF4 this morning.

        I can see already that it's faster than 3.6.x was.

        I do have Chrome as well, but prefer FF. FF has never "crashed" on me at all, though once or twice I've found sites that Chrome evidently preferred loading.

        I've noticed that the place you have to click on to "reload current page" has moved, but haven't seen any other big differences, and am wondering quite what all the people referring to "a whole new style/design" are referring to.

        Seems fine to me, anyway.

          You can actually move that around if you wish ( I just did and placed it 'where it belongs' )

          Options->Toolbar Layout disregard the popup and instead just drag any existing toolbar item (like the reload) wherever you wish!

            Marco, a faster way to do this would just be to right-click on the 'reload' button and select 'Customize' - this is one of the first things I changed, as I have grown used to having the 'refresh' button right beside the 'back' and 'forward' buttons.

    One other thing I noticed about FF4 is that it no longer saves my tabs to re-open next time. I did find a plug-in called Session Manager, though, that takes care of that for me now.

    I installed it on my laptop, just to see how well it worked for me,
    and to 'sample' the latest updates.

    So far, it's ok & I kinda like the new look,
    but I mostly use my desktop,
    and that runs Firefox 3.6.16.

    However, I'll admit that I've been much more hooked on Chrome,
    for reasons that a few of you here in this thread have already cited.

    I was SO sick of FF always crashing, or running videos only when I
    moved the mouse.

    So I'll have to play with the new FF4 on my laptop a bit more to get
    a good & proper evaluation.

    But hey, I'm new here, and wanted to jump out & lay down my first post!

    FF4 runs extremely slow for me... not sure why. 3.6 runs OK, but it still crashes often. When I take a look in task manager it says it's using up atleast 600mb and the plugin container about 3-400 (1 gb altogether).

    I think I'll be switching to Chrome, although I don't think there's an SEOQuake plugin for it. FF has become a joke.

      Bradley, you need to look under the hood a bit more :p

      Firefox has that option to re-open the tabs next time you open it. It's under the "preferences."

      When Firefox starts: - Show my home page
      - Show a blank page
      - Show my windows and tabs from last time

      I always choose my homepage. But thanks for that plugin. It's cool because Firefox doesn't really give you the option to "save this session for next time" if you want to close it. This plugin you mentioned allows me to decide whenever I want to save the session or not.

      That's REALLY weird Dean. Firefox doesn't use anywhere near that much RAM. Are you using a TON of plugins and visiting sites with a lot of Javascript and stuff? Shouldn't be anywhere near that.

      As for SEO Quake - Yes, it is available for Chrome I've got it on both.

        Actually, that's exactly what I was talking about. I guess I should have worded it differently. Yes, I wanted the option to save my tabs.

        I even used about:config to change a few settings but, while it did start asking to save the tabs, it wouldn't re-open them upon re-starting.

    I use chrome, opera and ff4. I've been using 4 since the second beta and they've certainly made it into a solid browser. It's fast and it is reliable. The only thing that that sucks is that it takes a pretty long time to start up, and sometimes when i close it I'll need to go through the task manager to fully close the process because it gets stuck. other than that though i gotta say it's just as nice as chrome; i use firefox for my main work so I'm using that browser most of the time. if you haven't used it yet I'd certainly recommend that you try it out.

    Hey DR's Fynest,

    I should have mentioned that usually happens after it's been running for a little while - maybe about 1-2 hours I'll cancel the process and restart FF. It starts creeping up really slowly.

    I don't think I have too many plugins and I disable stuff that doesn't work immediately... I got SEO quake, roboform, and some downloading plugins like DTA (Down Them All).

    Installed Firefox 4 about 1 week ago and it has some nice new features like a larger visible area etc. I use Chrome, Firefox and IE regularly but Chrome is by far the best for me for general purpose browsing. I have been using it for over a year now and I barely remember it has ever crashed. On the other hand, Firefox and IE do crash more than once whenever I use them. I didn't have the chance to download IE 9 yet, but I hear good things about it.

    Go for Chrome if you haven't tried it yet. I am sure you will like it.

      I tried chrome, but it doesn't appear to have a dropdown in the address bar of all the recently typed in sites, meaning one has to type the same website address everytime one wants to visit it.
      Or am I missing it in the options or something?
      Without that feature it makes it the worst browser for me.

        Don't know, Leslie ... but on my "Chrome" although there isn't a clickable box visible/openable (like in FF), as soon as I type the first letter or two into the browser-bar, it then opens automatically, filled with "predictive-text-style" url's previously visited, and I just have to click on the one I want in the normal way. :confused:

        (I agree that not being able to do that would make it terrible.)

          I know what you mean Alexa, but most browsers use predictive urls
          but it's the arrow at the end of the search box which is missing but is on all other browsers I've seen.
          These usually contain a drop down box with complete addresses that one has visited, so there is no need to type anything at all.

          There also seems to be missing the text links that most other browsers have too:
          File | Edit |View | Bookmarks | Tools
          Not to mention very few icons as well.

            I see what you mean now about the drop-down box. Another thing I don't like about Chrome is bookmarking. I like being able to right-click, click again and done.

      I downloaded Firefox 4 and lost my Yahoo toolbar. Apparently, it isn't compatible. Removed 4 and reinstalled 3.6. I happen to like my Yahoo toolbar and use it all the time. Maybe they've fixed this glitch by now. This was a few weeks ago.

    Some plugins and such aren't supported yet (As it's new duh) but it's amazing. New look that is quite amazing, and firefox didn't talk bull**** when they said it's 6 times faster. I mean even on this ****ty laptop it's incredibly quick. I love it.

      Without that feature it makes it the worst browser for me.

    I didn't like FF4 as much as 3. I went back to 3. The main reason is I like the screen grab functionality if I see a good website or optin page because it is so easy to grab and save it for reference. I found FF4 had a bug, at least on my computer.

    After a day I like firefox 4 a lot more now. Chrome is still more stable for my computer, I get a lot of crashes on my desktop (my portable has a very stable firefox somehow). I like better firefox still for everyday use.

    I have always hated the fat menu layout in Firefox, so was pleased with FF4 layout, however then it all went wrong for me. It was for me impossibly slow when compared to Chrome, I eliminated all add-ons so this was not an issue.

    The only reason I ever considered returning to FF was for its ability to open only sub-folder bookmarks. However I have now found a Chrome extension that eliminates that does this so my last reason for considering Firefox has passed.

    I actually like the "minimal" interface. However, it is not for EVERYONE and that is where Chrome needs to catch up with the customization aspects of Firefox.

    I personally do some customizations to mine that allow me the most screen real state while at the same time, having every single button/feature I need only a click away.

    Hint: You can move around all the toolbars and buttons in FF. You might want to spend a minute or two seeing if you can come up with a layout that works best for you

    Keep in mind in the included picture I have the status bar hidden which contains controls for SEOQuake, Adblock Plus, Download Statusbar, and other plugins. I can always show/hide it by using Ctrl+/

          Thank you. Hadn't noticed that little option, and I appreciate that. With the tabs back where they belong and being able to show / hide the status bar at the bottom, I really like this version.

          I'm doing all my work now on a laptop, and every extra bit of vertical scrolling I can save is appreciated. I do need the status bar sometimes, but not often.

        Personally, with the tabs all the way at the top edge of my screen, it is much easier to just "throw" the mouse up there and select the next tab in one movement. Whereas with the tabs below the address bar, I have to make sure to actually click on them or I might end up placing the cursor inside the address bar.

        Sounds like a lame excuse but since I tried it in Chrome, I haven't been able to go back to the tabs below the address bar lol.

          One thing you might appreciate is a gaming mouse. I have one that lets you set the dpi the mouse moves at. Most mice are at about 400 dpi, and I've kept mine at 800 for years. I'm totally used to it now. Very rarely, when I'm doing something that needs to be pixel perfect in Gimp, I'll set it at 200 dpi.

          The one I have is a Logitech and it is dying. I was just looking at their new ones a few days ago but they don't give the specific dpi you can set them at now, so I'll probably try to talk to someone live soon and see if I can get the mouse speeds I like.

          But for 'throwing' your pointer around the page, nothing beats it. Working with a 400 dpi mouse now seems like stuck in slow motion.

    Firefox 4 is great, soo much more space on the screen for the webpage you are looking at.
    Although one thing I've found, is on websites with Popup notification boxes when you leave it doesn't actually show the boxes text when you click to exit the page.
    It just comes up with a message saying "This page is asking you to confirm that you want to leave", which is a bit unfortunate due to the amount of affiliate pages using those (And how well they usually work)

    I'm holding off on updating until all my addons are confirmed working. I tried it on my father's PC though, and I _really_ disliked that they switched places on "Open in new window" and "Open in new tab" when you're right-clicking a link. Sooo annoying, and will definitely take a while to get used to. Why the hell did they do that? Guess they want to encourage people to use tabs by placing it at the top, but it'll be really hard to change the habit of clicking the second item.

    Since getting FireFox 4, I have had constant problems with the "Plugin Container" that has been added. This thing crashes every 3rd to 4th page that I load, which makes the computer sluggish while it tries to force quit the program.

    Looking online, I found ways to solve this problem. Such as allowing the plugin container access in your Firewall, and changing Firefox settings directly. Sadly, neither of these things solved the issue.

    Of course, I have Firefox 4 on my Linux laptop, and I must say that it works like a dream. My beef may just be with the Windows version, or maybe just Windows 7 (as I haven't tried it on other OS's yet).

    Other than the plugin container, nothing I have noticed is different other than a few movements in the Settings GUI. Add-ons are still a pain in the butt to completely remove, but simple to install and update. Pages load quickly (when there aren't 3 people watching Netflix in different rooms). And I have yet to require any software other than Flash player and the VLC add-ons.

      Thanks for sharing this, I had no idea this functionality existed! I especially like the Tab Grouping feature that FF4 has (it's the grid icon on the far upper right of the browser) that allows you to organize your tabs and categorize them according to functions/tasks, or however you wish.

      You usually have to wait a few seconds before restarting Firefox, otherwise you'll encounter that error. Press ctrl-alt-DEL to view your instance of Firefox that's running, and kill it before opening it again.

      This may sound strange, but the latest version of Chrome has become quite a memory hog, taking up 150MB for the installation and consuming quite a bit more memory (per tab) than Firefox 4.

    I upgraded and it's slow as frozen butter sliding down course sandpaper. Lots of broken plugins and extensions also. I use Chrome for most surfing activities.

    Still, Chrome is a lot faster at launch and while surfing. However, FireFox, along with some choice plugins is essential for SEO and keyword research. I am still looking for Chrome plugins that match those I have installed with FireFox.

      I honestly can't detect any substantial speed differences while surfing with both browsers, and on my computer it seems that FF 4 launches a bit faster than Chrome - which would make sense after all, given the fact that it occupies much less memory (installed) than Chrome.

      Try Firefox 4 for a change. The Firefox that you knew a year ago (3.6 or lower) is vastly different from version 4, which is dramatically faster and more stable.

    I mainly use FF because of a few plugins that I need for IM work, so I'll have to wait for the the plugins to be supported before I upgrade. My FF (3.6) slows down considerably when I have a few tabs open (say about 12 or more) and I also start opening a few tabs from certain websites (e.g. amazon). I hope this will be improved with FF4.

      It looks like the plugin and add-on developers have their work cut out for them - Mozilla are developing its browser at breakneck speed, and are furiously working on Firefox 5 as we speak even though the dust from the Firefox 4 launch has barely cleared!

      You'll have just reinstall Seoquake, and everything will be okay. Firefox doesn't automatically grab these applications, and I don't know why.

    Enjoying the speed of FF 4. Cannot comment on the plugin issues since I am not heavily dependent on those yet.

    Interesting to see lots of Chrome lovers here. I find it strange that a company with a clear history of breaching people's privacy gain the trust of so many other companies/business owners/entrepreneurs.

      Hi Tanvir,

      It's interesting, really. May be several reasons for this:

      - few people have read about the news of breaching people's privacy

      - people are forgetful

      - who didn't have such a case, doesn't care for that

      - there are so-called brand loyalty

      - aversion to new things, etc. etc.

    its taking a while to get used to the wider screen, tabs at the very top etc and my plugin compatiability is really frustrating to be honest. Ive reverted to IE for the time being, something i thought id never do.

    see people talking about chrome, might give that a try on the old laptop.

      I like the fact that they've compressed the toolbar and menu layout, as this frees up more vertical space to view websites now.

    As long as I have been using Firefox 4 it not has been the best browser that I have used. It's still heavy and all plugins of internet marketing are not supported by Firefox 4. I would highly recommend Firefox 3.6 rather than 4, if you are more into plugins. If you are more into interface then go with 4, its cool looking.

    As for speed, I have not seen any changes from 3.6. Still Google Chrome is the best

        I have FireFox 3.6.17

        While Firefox has never crashed on me, it is a resource hog, especially when I'm doing heavy work in it (multiple tabs).

        I'm wary on upgrading to version 4 only because I need SEO Quake and Firebug. I was using the Web Developer Toolbar, but it suddenly stopped working even after re-installing it. *shrugs*

        Chrome - I have no idea what anyone sees in it. Clunky, worse resource hog than FF, and doesn't play videos very well (Netflix, Hulu, etc) at all.

        IE8 - while it's not bad, I only use it to view work in a 2nd browser to make sure it looks alright. Or when something won't work in FF (sometimes Pogo.com games won't work in FF).

          I have been using FF 4.0. I was quite annoyed that all of a sudden I am expected to pay for updates to the Roboform tool vs. 7.0 in order for it to work with the FF 4.0.

          I did manage to get roboform vs 6.0 to work with FF 4.0. Just google both, and you will find the fix in the mozilla forum.

          And firebug works with FF 4.0.

    I've upgraded to FF4, for the most part it does seem to load a bit quicker, but I do get more crashes than before.

    Started using chrome lately too mainly because I get a lot less crashes.

    One thing 3.6 did that 4 doesn't seem to do, was give you the option of saving your tabs when you close the browser. Is there a way to do that, maybe I just couldn't find it?

    Sometimes I don't have time to finish with my tabs before leaving, and being able to just start FF when I get back, and have them all load again, was something that I appreciated.

      I think you do that by clicking the option of "restoring a previous session" under History. Do it when you first start FF and it will open the tabs where you left off.

      One of the things I noticed within the last few days is, whenever I start a second instance of FF4, the bookmarks toolbar disappears on the second version.

      I'm pretty sure I would have noticed that at the onset of the beta version 4.

      Anybody else have the same issue?

      IME, no one browser fills all purposes. I use FF, Chrome and IE, all at the same time, daily. I would probably use IE more but I have some weird timeout issue I have yet to resolve. At the end of the day, IE works with ANYTHING.

      Chrome has really stepped their game up; I love the browser but hate the Roboform interface, and using the "find" function takes way too many steps. Don't see that changing though with their minimalistic theme.

      Now I have some weird Acrobat plugin issue with FF4. Swear.

    Firefox 4 works great for me. I've been using it for a month or two and haven't had any problems. I have several plugins but haven't tested all of them... I just use them as the situation arises...

    I can say -- for me, at least -- the SEOQuake and Firebug plugins work just fine.

    FF4 seems to evade web bugs a lot better now too.

    But I really do like google chrome because of the speed. I think it's faster then FF3 in my opinion.
