Autoresponser/Mass-mailer - Third party service or self-hosted?

I usually prefer to purchase scripts that I run on my own server and have 100% control over. However, in regards to autoresponders, I am not sure if it's a good or bad idea. Do you think it is better to mass email from your domain name or from a third party service such as aweber?

I have no experience in mass emailing and would like to learn about the possible headaches (getting your domain wrongly labeled as a spammer or stuff like that) of using a self-hosted autoresponder.

Do most people go for third party services because they have a low/moderate hosting plan and do not have the resources or knowledge to implement their own autoresponder, or do these third party services really offer something that you cannot provide for yourself?

It has been discussed several times... last time here:
    http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...d-hosting.html

You will find part of the forum is for AR services (third party) and the other part for self-hosted.
I have hosting that could work with it but I don't want to waste time by learning and managing it...

I prefer to outsource my mass-mailing projects beacuse of the following reasons:
    1. No hassle - it is fully ready
    2. Most important - email servers recognize email arriving from these services and do not mark them as "spam"
    3. You do not overload your own server capacity - for big lists this is crucial
    4. Usually good reports and statistics

  • I don't have the time manage it, so I have to use a third-party service. Keep in mind that these guys are also very well-known and up-to-date on what's going on in the industry, so using them will also result in less spam accusations and bounce-backs for most users.

Only thing is that a 3rd party will ban you if people report your mail as spam, 1 per 1000 is usually the limit.

Thanks for the responses. From the answers here and the discussion on the other thread, it seems like it is in fact full of headaches managing this on your own.

That's always been how I've looked at it, I must say. It's not something I'd want to be involved with myself, on either a technical or a "risk" level.

At least one or two of the professional, commercial autoresponder services seem to do an excellent job with high reliability of deliverability, and it seems to me that their prices are extremely reasonable for the service they provide.

Yeah, the only time I would go for self-hosted is if I was trying to do some really advanced mail stuff. For example if I had an e-commerce site and wanted to e-mail people buying recommendations based on what they previously bought, things like that where you need to really be able to mail people individually. Surely there are 3rd party solutions to things like that too, but it's not something you can do with "the usual suspects" (aweber etc).

For me Self Hosted works best after being with Aweber and Getresponse and a couple others. My delivery rate is 100% now!
