Does anybody know or have a link to a recent article on stats of traffic to conversions for an ecommerce site?

What I am really looking for is about what percent of site traffic converts into a sale for an ecommerce item. I know that there our some other factors etc... but I am thinking good would be what 2-3 out of a 100?

Check out this article about the "MarketLive Index" from Internet Retailer.

    * Conversion rates were down 7.4% to 3.64% from 3.93%
    * Cart abandonment was up slightly to 60.91% from 60.20%
    * Exits after viewing one page fell to 32.24% from 37.9%.
    * The percentage of shoppers who place an item in a cart-which MarketLive calls the "engagement rate"-is up 10% to 9.51% from 8.64%.

The more important part of deciding whether to enter any niche is to determine first whether or not you have the potential to drive traffic to your site. You can make money with any niche as long as you figure out how to drive traffic to your site.

As for conversion rates, those are going to depend on the content of your site. If you have bad conversion rates than it is hardly acceptable to blame the industry. Also, you want to see how popular the niche is too. You could have a 50% conversion rate but if 2 people visit your site a week, than you're making pennies, whereas a 1% conversion rate with 500 people visiting a day is more money.

Anyway, hope this helps you get the answer you're looking for.

    Cheers,

Another key to a healthy eCommerce website is repeat customers.

If you're selling tee shirts, as an example, you'll want to be sure you don't lose contact with your customers. (Queensboro is a great example)

New customers are great, but repeat customers will keep your virtual doors open.

We get about 80% of our business from repeat customers. So what you are looking for is the lifetime value of the customer for eCommerce. So basically, equating a conversion based on a percentage of folks who discover your website will lead to lopsided thinking.

What you need to also be concentrating on is customer retention.

      I bet you knew that...
