My $15 Membership Site Blueprint..

I've spent the better part of today setting up a new
blog based membership site.

I already had the domain.. in fact I've been planning
to set this up for ages, but I finally managed to get
on with it today. Anyway, back to the plot.. assuming
you need to buy a domain, let's say $10

I set up a cpanel hosting account and used Fantastico
to install a basic Wordpress blog. I put the blog in its
own sub-directory, to allow for flexibility in the future.
Let's assume my hosting costs are $5 a month (The
site is on one of my own servers)

I set up a simple redirect on the site's root index page
to make sure casual visitors will land on the blog.

My next step was to set up wordpress with my own set
of basic plugins.

I then found a theme that had a nice fit with the purpose
of my blog and I edited the header, footer and css files to
my own personal tastes.

The next, and most complicated step, was to install and to
configure the free version of the MemberWing plugin. This
involved making sure that the IPN settings and auto-return
setting in my PayPal account were correctly configured.

Then I set up a PayPal subscription button and pasted the
code together with some brief sales copy in a dedicated
"Become A Premium Member" page.

Finally, I wrote and published five "articles" to my blog, some
of which included the "marker" to indicate the beginning of
premium content.

A quick request for beta testers here in the forum and a few
very kind Warriors helped me to iron out a couple of self
inflicted bugs and I was ready to launch.

So, I now have a fully functioning Membership site with an
in-build content management system, including the ability
to schedule my publishing, Set up and first months running
costs are around $15.

What are you waiting for? Get on with it!

John

Wow this seems a lot simpler then setting up something along the lines with Joomla. My question is can you set up different level of memberships and such?

    But still a brilliant plan.

Yes, the MemberWing Plugin allows you to set up
Bronze, Silver, Gold & Platinum levels and each
level can have its own subscription fee.

Does this also allow each of the levels to have certain access to certain things whether it be an individual page or blog entry.

      Hmmmm

That might be good for a very simple application, but for any meaningful membership website you need to be trying to create a viral online community. A huge piece of that is a forum. You need user profiles to leverage the social networking as well.

Coincidentally enough (no... really), I just launched a WSO for Joomla-based membership sites. Obviously more expensive, but I can create them faster than your solution .

We actually had a couple of guys create full-blown membership websites using their iphones!

      Hi Paul,

I've only installed the bare minimum at the moment, as
I didn't want to complicate the set up.

As well as MemberWing, I've activated:

SpamKarma2 - In my opinion, the best comment Spam
      prevention tool

MaxBlogPress Ping Optimizer - avoids multiple pings when
      editing posts

AudioPlayer - I plan to add Podcasts to the premium area.

Wow John, this is a beauty.

I was looking for something like this a while back but I never found the MemberWing plugin.

I take it that this just secures the actual content within WordPress? I only ask because I had to use something that secured access to my niche database which sits outside of WordPress (so I had to use a PHP script called iSubscribe).

But to be honest it was a right pain to get working so if I set up a membership site within WordPress in the future, I will definately use this model.

    Many thanks.

Did you configure the IPN and auto-return in the button/order link itself? If not, you might have challenges with any return pages that are straight HTML.

      Paul,

After trying a few alternative settings I discovered that
the optimum set up is with auto-return set to off and the
IPN set to on, with a return url to the root domain.

The "success" and "cancelled" return urls can be easily set
      up in the subscription button.

Getting that part of the set up was the most challenging
part of the entire process. But, if I can do it, there's hope
      for many!

    A couple of updates..

    1. In a little less than 48 hours since the blog was re-launched
there have been a total of 559 unique visitors.

    2. The sign up to premium conversion rate is 2.7%

    3. I've added eight blog posts and there are 16 comments from
    visitors and members.

Assuming I can get four new members each day, the blog will
be have earned around $1,200 by the end of month one. Similarly,
if the rate of membership growth is maintained, the blog will
be making over $14,000 a month this time next year.

Initial investment $15... Food for thought?

      Cool model!

      Question though:

I've never created a membership site and am very interested in this model for doing so. But what about those members who drop out? Will they be able to access the members-only area if they've bookmarked the page?

I've seen members-only areas lock out members if their memberships lapsed and I've seen other members-only areas allow people back in if they'd bookmarked the correct page even though their membership had lapsed. So I'm just wondering if this model allows you to lock out people of they let their membership lapse.

      Thanks,

The free version of the script is still available
and, while automation can be bought at an
additional cost, it is still possible to set up
      a membership blog for $15.

Of course, as you grow your list of members,

For anybody who wants to set-up the SAME "Blog Membership Model" that John set-up, using the MemberWing Plugin, but with many MORE ADVANCED options on the payment-processing, e-commerce, and affiliate management side of the model, check out:

      Nanacast's WP "Member Lock" Plugin:
      http://www.LWLMedia.com

(( once on site, scroll down and click on: "Automate And Centralize Your Business" ))

After 4 years of searching for a HOSTED one-stop-managed e-commerce-to-affiliate tracking system (even scrapping a $3K system to move into web 2.0 technology that wins hands-down), we moved everything over to Nanacast to run our promotions and campaigns.

We can run all types of pricing structures (from a firesale, to a dimesale, to a trial offer and payment plan pricing system and more), issue customized coupon codes to our community, and accept all forms of payment (PayPal, AmEx, Discover, Visa/MC).

Yet, this is just for starters...so, so much more to say about what is behind such a seemingly infant platform...yet, Josh knows his stuff when it comes to where the shortcomings of other "scripts" and "systems" lie ( think of Nanacast combining the best features and enhancements of 1shopping cart, Butterfly Marketing, aMember, Fantasos, etc. )

I ran across this thread several months ago and I decided to give this model a try. I set everything up and began promoting the site.

One of the things that came up was when a member logged into the membership site, they were being taken straight to the Dashboard page of the blog. I didn't really like that, so after a little research, I found a plugin that redirects members to a specific page (main page in this case) and can be configured based on class of member. (gold, silver, etc.)

        Problem solved...

It's called Peters Login Redirect and it can be found at the WP site:

Thanks for this, I just installed it and it works perfectly.

It was bugging me that members were logged in to the dashboard as well, now they are directed to their own specific download area.

          Cheers,
          Dave.

    John,
Nice site. I'm finishing my own at this time.
I just wanted to share a couple of my observations about your site....

You don't have a "home page" link anywhere. After clicking through your site for a bit, there is no easy way back to your home page. In addition, you would probably help yourself by having an opt-in for a newletter or similar to build your list. I know that you collect names when premiums pay and I know you have a script that is supposed to ask you to log in after so many visits (it never asked me though), but some people may want to "stick" with you and you are not giving them a way to do that without paying $10 a month.

I am certainly not an expert, but I hope this is useful.

    Best of luck,
    David

    David,

Thanks for the feedback, I appreciate it.

I agree the "Home" link needs to be added to the
navigation bar. You can navigate Home by clicking
the "logo" in the header, but it's no obvious.

I haven't installed my Reverse Squeeze plugin yet and
that's why you haven't been asked to optin to read
    more content.

I've recently installed an alternative list building system
and I'll be activating it soon, when I've completed my
    testing. ;-)

A great business model and real food for thought... great thread john!

Can I ask - how is it going now? Both in numbers and in how are you finding the plugin with a tad more experience?

Have you tried any new methods of marketing over the last couple of weeks to what you originally stated?

Either way, thanks again, a truely great thread I have bookmarked to comeback to

As planned, I'm adding new content regularly and
the content is doing the selling. I'm also pleased
with the level of interactivity with an average of
        three comments for each post.

The Christmas and Hogmanay holidays slowed things
down somewhat. However, starting next week I have
a few promotional activities in the pipeline.

I have to be honest John..

That I doubted this method when you first posted it, purely because of the simplicity...

    BUT..

Being a member of the site you did it on ( http://marketingconfidential.com/private ) and looking into the plugin just now.. I can see how smoothly this can run...

My niche blogging of late has taken more of a "membership" type level. My I.M. blog is more chit chat.. but some of my niche blogs really are bleeding too much free, high quality info.. So this is perfect..

Expect to hit a brick wall on many of my blogs soon as I implement this

    Cheers dude

    Peace

    Jay

p.s. What makes this even more special, is that some of my blogs are 2 - 3+ years old, but I can work this into them retro actively (sp?)... good times...

          Ah right..

I have mine set up so that I:

Step 1) E-mail them a username and password

Step 2) In the same e-mail I also include a link to the login page.

Once they have registered, they will be cookied when they next visit after one login...so all the content will be visible right away..

John, great thread. The best kind of methods to do anything, in my humble opinion, are the ones that are simple and straight to the point. Your post shows how easy it is to setup a membership website, and almost free.

I think you already had a domain for this site? If someone needs to buy a domain, they can do this for LESS that $10 by using NameCheap coupon codes. That'll make your total running costs below signigifcantly $15

MemberWing is a nice find - thanks for that too!

If you have the paid plugin then Yes, you can set it up to do it automatically..

John - brilliant stuff. I love the fact that for $100 you can buy the plugin and have no branding on it, gradual content delivery, etc. This is a MASSIVE opportunity here.

I seriously like this product! I have a project in mind where this might be absolutely perfect.

How are passwords handled? Say I subscribe with PayPal, is my email address going to be my login, and my receipt number my password?

This is a great product, and your blueprint is outstanding from a technical perspective.

If you don't mind saying - what is your plan for:

    1) promotion - to get subscribers
    2) content creation - to keep subscribers

      Mickey,

What is probably happening is that you are logged in as the administrator so you can see everything. Same thing happened to me, by the way.

In order to see how your site looks with the content markers in place is to open a new browser and then navigate to your home page. You should then be able to see how it looks to folks visiting your site who are not members.

      Hope this helps...

    I'm wondering how it's going?

Also, do would you have any advice for someone who doesn't have the tech know-how to do the steps you mentioned below?:
(The next, and most complicated step, was to install and to
configure the free version of the MemberWing plugin. This
involved making sure that the IPN settings and auto-return
setting in my PayPal account were correctly configured.

Then I set up a PayPal subscription button and pasted the

Would anyone be able to tell me how to add a download link for premium members? I've been at this for 2 days now.

I have no problem adding a download link to a blog without the Memberwing plugin. However, when I try to do the same with my membership site, the link just takes me to a 404 page.

I understand of course that this thread is more about the technological side of it, but I still have a question on the actual usability. What I mean, does this really work? What kind of articles and content do you provide that people actually do come and pay 15 dollars a month to read get a chance of seeing it? I've heard that even big newspapers who have an army of people working on the content have trouble selling monthly memberships.
