I used Word, and then imported it into Mobipocket Creator to publish the book in Kindle format.

ok i have just done with my first book listing..first thing, i have downloaded above software and havent found very useful at first glance but i do want to report that amazon itself convert your book in kindle formate..might be i m missing something its my first effort on amazon kindle book publishing.

I just scanned the typewritten manuscript of my novel, Murder Doubles Down, into my computer. Formatted it in Open Office and uploaded to Kindle. It's now on sale.

I have created all my Kindle ebooks in Word and Amazon formats them for me. For those that have never done it it is easy. However don't bother adding images becasue they are greyed out. If anyone needs any assistance please pm me and I will be glad to assist.

I agree...

Images will not have color on Kindle...but not including images for that reason is short-sighted, to say the least.

The Kindle will be color shortly...or Amazon will have their own tablet...which will be color.

Do you really want to publish a bunch of Kindle ebooks without color...only to have to go back and re-do all of them to include color in 6 months?

And what about those who read on their laptop or devices with color?

Those who read on their laptop via the Kindle App or on an Android device with color can still see color photos.

Uploading as a .DOC is the way to go....unless you have access to Adobe InDesign and use the Kindle Plugin.

I have a how-to ebook that I'm thinking of converting to Kindle format, but it's image intensive, and the images are necessary to the content. Are Kindle images black-and-white, but legible? Or do images really not work well on Kindle at all?

Easiest way is to just do it in word, clear out all formatting and format everything very simple. Be sure to get of all extra line breaks and insert proper page breaks after each chapter.

Be careful with bolds and underlines. In my experience, they sometimes do strange things upon the Kindle conversion.

NOTE: Keep your price 2.99 or above if you want the 70% commission...

One other comments for those unaware:

Submit to Smashwords. It takes a little more time but Smashwords will push it to Barnes and Noble, Sony, Apple, etc. They will create it in pdf, etc.

This gives an incredible amount of options to your users/buyers.

And Smashwords gives you a much higher share of the commission.

I love how Amazon does business. I recently sent them a complaint regarding my business account and they handled it in a way that exceeded in my expectations. I would use them for everything if I could.

Regarding Smashmouth--can you publish both places? I don't see why not but there might be something I'm missing.

And if you're using FireFox, get a nifty extension called DeeperWeb (free, of course) which gives you all sorts of other kinds of information and links -- blogs, research, news -- to augment your idea-generating within the topic.

I wrote on on how to get started as a freelance writer online. Put it in several formats, but Kindle was the fastest selling one for me so far. Since I don't know how to track pageviews on the Amazon page (I am so very new to IM), I'm considering dropping the book to half-price for a month just to see what happens.

I publish my own work on Kindle along with stuff for clients. It takes me less than a day to research, write, publish on Kindle and create a sales page for a unique ebook.

Meanwhile... some of my clients STILL have not gotten their first ebook published on Kindle 3 months after it could have been published.

Biggest stumbling block seems to be falling into the "editing loop" where they just keep changing their own changes and never quite have it 'perfect'.

The key to success with internet marketing it to actually TAKE ACTION.

I got lucky and within half an hour after reading this post my first book was live on kindle..LOL
No sale.. but Nice experience so far..kindle is easy to use and it helped a lot when you are publishing your first book, i just gave my pdf and even havent created any cover they have created one for me by defaul..overall nice experience. I wll explore this project after completing the current one i have. so dont wait my friend just go and publish your first book if you havent done it yet..thier is money on the plate..only you need to take action.

It depends on the niche, however while my Kindle books have not "set the world on fire" and "flown off the shelves", they actually make fairly steady (though small) passive income.

I just love getting emails notifying me that I have made another sale for a Kindle book that I can't even remember writing!

Actually i cant expect sales cause i was just testing how it works and i suppose to create a good cover page which i havent done so this could be the main reason i havent got any sale yet..

but i know I m too busy to work on kindle things but its in my pend list as i finish my current project i will move to kindle.

You should be able to do it from down under. I'm from South Africa and are selling ebooks on kindle. They used to have a policy until about the latter half of last year that authors outside the US couldn't participate on the kindle platform, but then changed it.

Basically the only differences between US authors and international authors on kindle are the way they handle payments and taxes. US authors can get payments directly in their US bank accounts, but international authors get paid by check (unless you happen to have a US bank acc.) - I already got checks from them.

In terms of taxes, they treat the income you receive from kindle as authors' royalties (although you might actually be more of a publisher selling there) and royalties are subject to US income tax and income tax in your own country. If your country doesn't have a tax treaty with the US, or you don't supply them with the right tax documentation, they'll withhold about 30% of your royalties for US income tax. If you have a TIN or EIN you just have to supply them with the documentation and they'll stop withholding your taxes in the US. You can take look on their website about what they exactly require from you.

I applied for an EIN (employers id no) back in 2008 for tax treaty benefits for my createspace books. I looked up a phone no on the IRS website, gave them my company details (i'm just a sole trader) and they sent me back a W-8BEN form with my EIN. You'll just have to physically mail the W-8BEN form to kindle, they don't accept it via email anymore.

Kindle is actually no problem. The person you spoke with was probably referring to printed books through CreateSpace or Smashwords.

We are not banned from doing this, however if you self publish without a US tax ID they withhold 30% tax on your royalties.

In those cases because we do not have US tax ID's we need to get one.

The process for getting a US Tax ID for an individual is a pain in the butt, however through trawling through a bazillion different US tax related forums and sites I was able to find a great way around it

You can get an EIN (Employer Identification Number also known as a Federal Tax Identification Number) in your business name, or if you do not have a registered business name, in your own name.

If you call the IRS on 267-941-1099 and ask for an EIN they can issue it over the phone. It takes about 10 minutes and you will need your Australian Tax File Number.

Once you have that you just fill out a W-8BEN form and send it to CreateSpace/Smashwords

The tax treaty between the US and Australia is Article 12

This allows you to pay only 10% withholding tax on book royalties

For the reason you are using the W-8BEN form you put "Australian author self publishing via US distributor"

I was writing a new PLR packet when I realized it might be better spent as an ebook on Kindle. I still might, I can only locate one existing PLR packet in the niche and it's quite old and basic. Anyway, Amazon won't pay you if you live in North Carolina(like I do) and a few other states. I don't know why that is.

So if I'm going to use the Kindle method I need another way to be paid.

Any ideas?

As stated above you might want to look into this because KindleDP paymets are different from Amazon Associate payments.

  I only uploaded 3 books but it wasn't junk, it was formatted well, pretty good cover image, spent some time on tags, etc. They weren't just thrown together. 0 sales in about 8 weeks.
  
  Granted 3 books isn't a lot but based on my results I doesn't seem pursing for me. I would love to do more with Kindle but I would need to see results to continue. I do make money with my other online ventures.

Publishing content on the kindle is very profitable if done right , just putting your book up there and hoping for the best will not make you much, like any other product it needs to be promoted properly.

I now have 2 of my ebooks in the Publishing limbo area(should go live sometime tomorrow) and a PLR packet I wrote ready to be edited into a new ebook in the next few days.

Gonna promote them within the communities a little and keep writing. Write, publish, promote in that order

Amazon offers their customers a free preview of, I think, the first chapter. Make sure your copy is especially good here. Punctuation, grammar, etc should be perfect. It will definitely help your sales.

The cheapest you can sell a book is 99 cents.

There is no way to automatically add customers to your list after making a sale.

Amazon is NOT about to hand over it's customer list...you wanna use their marketplace, you have to play by their rules.

However, adding customers to a list is not difficult.

Offer them something for FREE inside of the ebook....link to a squeeze page.

All the marketing tricks are great...but the REAL KEY to getting someone who buys your ebook to sign up for your list or purchase one of your products is to produce a HIGH QUALITY product and knock their socks off.

If you give them quality content...I mean, content that truly is top notch...they will BEG to be on your list.

Once a kindle book is uploaded to kdp.amazon, can I update the kindle book in the future? The reason I ask is, say I create related books or a series on the same subject, can I do self promotion inside multiple kindle books to help boost sales?

Yes...you can update ebooks once they are published.

It will take 24 to 48 hours for the product to update....even if you just change the price.

However, it is not difficult to update your ebooks....

I wrote the ebook/website "Kindle Profits" probably three years ago and sold the rights to the product/website shortly after that. So, I've been involved with selling on the Kindle for several years now and I can tell you, it keeps getting better.

For my best selling product, I'm making between $500 and $600 per month...on just one book. I spent a few bucks on a PLR product I found right here on this forum. It was one of the best ROI ever. I first put it into hard copy and I sell it for $16 on Amazon (and expanded distribution). I have sold over 450 copies and have made around $3500 profit in less than a year. I recently put it in Kindle format as well. I was worried that it would cut into my hard copy sales (which makes more profit) but instead, my sales actually doubled. I'm still selling as many hard copies as I am Kindle copies.

There are some tricks to making it work, but it does work. And, if you can get the formula right, you can turn it into a goldmine.

Let me leave a little bit of wine and cheese "in a good sense, no-REALLY KICKER sense"

Go to Fiverr.com and look for an I will do an Amazon Review for Kindle type search, anything to do with Amazon review. Mix up the kw's and find one with several positive reviews in their gig. Buy from this and have your book reviewed by them. That'll kick up sales.

If you are interested in promoting your book at all check out the author forums on Amazon and look for people who want to do mutual reviews - you can purchase each other's books and write a review for each other. People like to see reviews of products before they buy, it can give you a little extra selling power.

It's just a flat image....

My advice is to NOT use the fancy 3D "ecovers" we see all the time in the "IM" world.

Just use Photoshop and create an image 600x800.

If you don't have access to Photoshop, use SumoPaint or Pixlr.

One thing to bear in mind with the Kindle - I just started uploading books last week - is that people can instantly get a free sample of the first 10% of your book.

Out of curiosity, I checked out samples for some of the many, many duplicates of old PLR books on there and it's obvious people are simply throwing ^%$^%$ at the wall in the hope something will stick - the formatting is not just bad, it's chaotic and unreadable. No one in their senses would buy it.

And the multiple duplicate covers must make even the most naive user wonder "wtf?"

So if you must use PLR or PD: at least reformat them so they are readable on the Kindle, and make a new cover. Of course, if all the &^%^&-uploaders did that it would be harder to ignore the junk, but I doubt if they will.

Totally agree with the original poster, Just Do it. I began publishing on Kindle back in February of this year. I now have 20 books published. I've hit best seller status with several of those books for my chosen category, outselling some major players in my niche. Of those 20, 11 are consistent sellers.

I do tie all of my books of the same niche together by including something along the lines of "If you enjoyed reading this book you may also enjoy"...and I link to my other books of the same niche and my website which promotes all of my books.

The only marketing I have done is creating a facebook fanpage for 5 of those books and I only started that process about 2 weeks ago. However, I did no promoting before that and they were selling well.

I have also been lucky as I've found several of my books being promoted by a large amount of websites through the Amazon affiliate program.

Hey guys! Great job getting the Kindle books up and out there. I went a bit crazy this weekend and have 22 up since buying Paul's WSO. They're on a wide variety of subjects, but I stayed away from the "make money" niche on Paul's advice. I have a membership at plrassassin, so all these books were just sitting on my hard drive already. I priced them all at $3.99, but haven't seen any sales yet. I hired a few Fiverrers to do some reviews for me. Hopefully these will stir some interest in the titles.

I have a few questions for Paul:

My table of contents NEVER formats right into Kindle. I am being very careful with the formatting beforehand, making sure that ONLY my chapter titles are Headers so the TOC function in Word only grabs them, and not other text that might be miscategorized. But no matter what I seem to do, or in what order, the TOC looks crappy in Kindle, or shows up partially on the title page. What am I doing wrong?

Maybe I'm overthinking this, but does it matter that we're using a generic, graphics-based book cover instead of something with a picture that is topical to the book's subject (ie, a fisherman on the front of a bass-fishing boat)?

How do you get your Word document to display multiple pages in the display, instead of just 2 at a time?

I know these are all bonehead questions, but I saw this thread and thought I'd stop in and tell you about my new-found Kindle obsession

Another concern I have is whether it's really kosher just to throw up a PLR book with none of my 'own' content in it. Do you inject any of your own material into the PLR when you're 'writing', or do you just have your outsourcer focus on nailing the formatting so everything looks pretty? I've read and heard talk that eventually, Amazon will be 'cleaning house' and targeting PLR for removal (sort of makes sense when you think about it).

I ordered a few DVDs of PLR off of ebay and I'm anxious to see the level of quality there. Do you have any other preferred sources of PLR?

This is what they are being told works...and people are telling them (or should I say SELLING them?) that this will work for them too...and make them uber-rich...on auto-pilot....with little or no work...:rolleyes:

Don't worry though...because now instead of using the exact same covers...they are instead going to use the same generic cover templates...(sigh)...

That said, I'm not "against" using PLR to make things easier and put your publishing business on hyper-speed.

I've used it in my Kindle business several times.

But there is a right way to do it...

Even done the "right" way....my PLR titles are hardly making me rich - they do add some extra money to my royalty checks every month though.

Plus, they usually take me a month or two just to get to the "break even" point, because I have to BUY the PLR content, edit it or PAY to outsource that, and BUY a stock photo and/or graphics for the cover.

The biggest thing that bugs me is the SELFISH attitude that follows this model.

There seems to be no thought about the actual CUSTOMER on the other end who purchases these products on Kindle. It's like they don't exist in the mind of the person steadily uploading garbage to Kindle.

It's a bad way to run a business...and very short-sighted.

This is definitely on my list of things to do... I'm curious, is it possible for someone who has bought one of your books to search Amazon somehow for the rest of your books to find everything written by you(assuming you didn't put links to them in the ebook)?

I just converted my book to Kindle last week, too.

It took me a bit to re-format some of it because some bullets on certain pages were geeked up, but I finally got it.

I have gotten quite addicted to publishing on the Kindle recently. There have been some solid WSO's offered on this topic that make the process so easy and step by step. I was able to publish 8 books on Kindle over the weekend, and now have a goal of submitting at least 10 each week.

I have a question regarding the ebooks that you're supposed to make when posting on Kindle, what would a good length of the ebook be? And would this be profitable for someone that has no experience writing ebooks of any sort?

The length isn't too important, just make sure you deliver something that is of quality.

There are different methods for finding content to publish on Kindle, so yes, it can be done even if you've never written an ebook. Try using PLR or public domain content to base your Kindle books on.

Not sure if they are the "wave of the future"....but they give you access to an absolutely gigantic marketplace - Amazon, B&N, Apple (iBooks).

What it will do is change what people think about "ebooks".

That means if you are selling info-products, calling your product an "ebook" will instantly de-value it and lump it in with the $2.99 ebooks on Amazon and other sites.

Yeah, it's easy to get a kindle book up on Amazon, however, I just found out that they got rid of tags for all ebooks. It will now be more challenging to promote your ebook without this feature.

Wonder is they're trying to protect their paper book sales?

To be honest...the Tag system was a bit outdated, and rather easy to "game".

Now the focus shifts to keywords....in your title and your description.

The "Like" button is also there....but who knows for how long. It is yet another system that can be "gamed".

Reviews are still important...along with some other factors I think Amazon would like to keep secret....

Just a couple of questions:

Where exactly do you submit the ebook?

^ Stupid question award I know but can't really find the right place.

Also is it just pdf files that you can covert?

Don't know a lot about Kindle so is there any way that you can play videos on them and if so what format?

I have three fiction novels up on Kindle, that have been there for several months. One has a review. The others are still waiting for one. I have to confess, that until this past week and getting involved in this forum, and finding all those awesome Kindle resources, I hadn't much of an idea of how to promote them. Now I do, so we'll see how it goes.

I cannot believe, though, that I overlooked a little ebook I'd tossed together, more or less, to go along with one of my romances--50 or so hot chili pepper recipes. The heroine's family love their hot peppers!

I've just started editing the book for the Kindle. Needs a different cover and maybe a new title. There are illustrations in there as well. I know they won't look so pretty in b/w, but, oh well.

Hope to have it up by tonight. Wishing I had an excuse for not going up to the in laws for game night tonight! Could get it up sooner! :-D But I'll do my duty and show up for the games . . .
