What to Do With Unused Domains?

When I was trying to figure out what direction I wanted to go (shiny-IM-syndrome), I started buying domains like crazy. Since that time, I decided to not go that route and focus on a few small areas.

My question is I imagine there are a bunch of ways to sell domains, but what is the most efficient and profitable way to get rid of them? Auctions, here, ads? I don't know how to transfer them, so what is the easiest way to go about selling my domains? They are ALL .com's, registered with my hosting provider. Thanks!

  • I'm not a domain reseller or flipper, so I'll let others comment on that, but I do know you can make money from parked domains.

  • The best thing you could do is to simply keep your domains for a rainy day. I too have quite a few that I never fully followed through on.

    For now, get a miniscule use out of them and have whichever domains you aren't using and point them towards one of your main domains, that way, they are atleast being used.

    As for selling them. Unless they are premium domains there is not a good chance that they will sell any time soon. Although you can try

      Some of them are decent. I am pretty sure I won't use them, I have seen people sell them here or in auctions. Thanks for the tips!
  • I have about 40 over domains and recently, I have been turning most of them into auto blogs and sell the as websites.

    You can either sell them as it is (use sedo.com for domain selling) or let it expires if you don't want to spend too much time and effort on it anymore.
  • julie-i was once in the same boat. I first started out buying a gang of domains without knowing what i was doing. I eventually redirected them to cpa offers. Its fast easy and gets the unused domains out of your hair with a possible chance to make some money on some affiliate offers! I just wouldn't let them expire without geting your hard earned money out of them
  • I agree with fated82. Selling a domain is the best way to do the unused domain. You can to to flippa to sell it.

    • You can sell them or turn them into some nice auto blogs, with the right tools and software you can have them making you a nice profit each year without too much upkeep. Just remember, all auto blogs are not created equal, research what makes a good auto blog and once it's setup it's all profit. Every single auto blog I have earns it's keep.

      All auto blogs are not evil as some people will lead you to believe, there are ways to get free content posted to your blog automatically and legally. These blogs will also promote their selves using rss and other 100% legal techniques.

  • Julie, if I were you, then I would promote the domains for a while and sell them after getting some traffic OR I would build wordpress sites on those domains and sell them, it only takes half hour to setup a wordpress site.

    Promoted domains and websites with some good traffic and monetization of the websites sell at a very high rate on sites like flippa.

    Sites with no traffic or earning sell at $250 on flippa. Imagine what your promoted site with traffic (and a little earning may be) would sell for.
  • I was in the same situation recently Julie. I put a page on my website with a list of the domains for sale and just put a link in my signature here. I was only selling them for around $5 though just to get rid of them. I sold a few and those that didn't sell I let expire.
  • I sold a few unused domains to Flippa. Make sure the domain is not banned from Google otherwise buyers will not be happy campers to get your domain.
  • I think it's a great idea to build some additional value into the domain names before you sell them; cpa offers, a turnkey website, a wordpress blog pulling in rss feeds, a holding page for google adsense - and then make a list of your domains for sale on a blogger blog, making sure you've got hyperlinks back to your domains. Leave for a few months and then sell on flippa.

  • I sold a bundle on flippa too.

    I sold like 10 of them, but it was one that the person was after as it had SEO'd name. I ended up making $600 for 10 of the names, but like i said they guy probably only used 1. But $600 was good profit for these and hassle that I had keeping them.
  • Add a single page of content, wait for them to be indexed and sell them off in DigitalPoint forum for $20 each... am assuming you have only domains with no content
  • List them on Sedo.com right away, and be sure to insert your actual selling price. List them at the lowest price allowed if your goal is to try to unload them quickly. If you're just interested in getting your money back for the registrations, go and list them in the appropriate section of NamePros.com, and sell them to resellers at reg fee.
  • I would put some basic information on them
    Get some content, either pay someone to write unique content for you or use articles from Ezine or another directory.
    Monotize the sites by adding adsense blocks, amazon or clickbank ads and then put them up for sale on Flippa.
    They won´t go for much probably $100 or less but you will still get a profit from them and its better than having them just lying around.

    • Exactly this. If they are not special names its doubtful you will get much more then reg fee for them, but if you develop them to a point where they are generating revenue, buyers will become interested. And of course if the sites are related to your own sites you can use them for link building purposes.
