What kind of affiliate programs would you go for?

Hi I'm new here and looking for a bit of guidance. I'm building a social networking site and I'm looking at building an affiliate program into it with financial rewards instead of extra credits/seeds/points etc...

My question to anyone here or anyone experienced in the affiliate marketing business is, what kind of programs/incentives would get you interested?

For example i know that a large number of hosting companies offer a 1 time $50-$70 commission per sale, when the hosting itself only costs $5-$10 a month. So they are willing to give up the profits for the first few months to make them more enticing.

I still haven't really settled on a payment style so recurring % of sale (residual style income) or 1 time commissions are equally doable.

I'm also toying with the idea of random paid referrals i.e- If someone finds my site organically a high level affiliate partner has a chance that when they purchase something it will go under them instead of all to me. (reward for being a higher level member)

Please give me some feedback as it will greatly help me help those of you who may be interested in some affiliate offers down the track.

Thanks

Not a fan of the random referrals personally. I'd rather that the top affiliates get rewarded with higher %, faster payout and things like that.

Recurring or one-time is hard to say. I actually prefer one-time most of the time as an affiliate, especially for newer offers with no proven stability. I mean who knows how long your site is going to stick around? (no offense, just saying that affiliate programs pop up and disappear every day) How about letting affiliates choose between recurring or one-time?

It's been my experience, top affiliate marketers generally look for 6 things when choosing affiliate programs to promote:

    1. A viable product or service that has mainstream appeal.

    2. Affiliate friendly merchant.

    3. Generous commission structure.

    4. Stability.

    5. Prompt reliable payments.

    6. Recurring payments.

Thankyou both for your replies, i do agree i'm not a fan so much of random referrals either i was tossing the idea around.

And thanks David those points are quite helpful as a guide.

Any other nifty ideas or specials anyone has come across in their time that they enjoyed or would like to see again.

I was also entertaining the idea of monthly prizes either items like (i-pads/vouchers etc..) or purely cash so long as a base target gets achieved, anyone had good or bad experience with those types of rewards?
