Hi,

I have a wordpress website with a .com.au extension (Australia) - I want to start up the same site, or very similar in a .com extension - to promote in usa market.

What is the best way to structure it...eg do i have two different sites?

Is there an issue with duplicate content...how do the big companies do it??..eg they have multiple sites with very similar content in many different countries...

I don't think it will be considered duplicate content in the search engine because both countries will not show up in the same search result when people find it.

I checked out Google Finland as an example in google.fi

I typed in Google in search box, and Google.fi came up first and "google.com" is not found .. at least not in the first few pages.

You should be fine however your first site is always going to be the one considered to have the same content. In any means if your just going to have everything the same but on a different .au domain or what have you then you can just always redirect the domains to your main site.
