I know that I am not using Linked-In to its fullest potential right now by just adding the people I have met in person and I generally accept all connection requests.
I wanted to know if any more experience marketers see any value of adding LION (Linked-IN Open Networker) to their profile. Does it really help you to get over 500+ connections quicker? I wanted know if it would be better to keep building my network by adding connections of my connections to my network or if being a LION is the better way to build a network?

Other than perhaps adding one of those super Lion "he has 1 million connections. Just so you can get a broader view of the landscape. You yourself becoming a "lion" member would almost be a detriment.

By that I mean, networking is GREAT when you form connections and meet new people and expand doors you ordinarily would not have opened. However, just adding 500 or 5,000 random people that have no common interests with you or your line of work, just to "add people" does you nor them any good. I would instead focus on building those connections or adding clients you already work with, rather than be in a rush to hit 500 connections or a random target goal.

Most of the LION's I have seen are recruiters.

If you are out looking for a job, then being connected to LIONs is a benefit.

If you are just wanting to be well connected, then it probably doesn't matter because it is like having twitter followers that you follow back. It creates noise and now you have to spend extra mental energy evaluating if you actually know that guy that is connect to so-and-so before you ask for an introduction.

I can relate to that because I have so many Facebook friends I don't know. The funny thing is I went to an event where I met 3 people on my friends list and had no idea how they knew my name without me introducing myself. (no one was wearing name tags) I was really embarrassed when I had to ask them their names, so I opened the facebook app on my phone and started looking at pictures of my friends just in case i ran into someone else.

Thanks for re-assuring me that I should focus on building closer relationships with the people already in my network and if it is meant for my network to grow really large I should let it happen more naturally. I was thinking it might make me look more professional to have a bunch of connections.

It really does not matter how many connections and how fast you get them. What you need to work on is talking with those people and really connecting with them. Social media is not a numbers game when it comes to talking to people and striking business deals

Ah...quality over quantity. Just the type of answer I wanted to get since I was wondering if quantity was a good thing and how to get more connections if quantity helps.

Quantity is important for several reasons:

        1. For lead generation
        2. For market research

Building a relationship with your network is ideal but there are also
legitimate reasons for having a large network.

        Hope this helps,
        Merlyn

There's two sides to every coin and right now I think i should focus on the 78 or so 1st level connections in building relationships for quality contacts, and add the 2nd & 3rd level connections since they are already connected to people that know me to increase my quantity of connections

I've been training people on LinkedIn for about 3 years now and I always encourage them to make real connections with a core group of users.

There are several ways to do this; obviously, if they're in your local area, you can get together for coffee or meet at in-person networking events. I've done that quite successfully.

If they're not in your area, then you can connect with them on FB and Twitter, and interact with them on LinkedIn.

            Good luck!
            Merlyn
