Is it really that hard for you to hit the go to check out button at the bottom of the page. It's actually pretty darn easy to skip all of the upsells on godaddy.

Once you understand that GD will try to sell you loads of additional services then you will have no problems.

As Christopher said - ignore the upsells and go straight to the checkout.

Exactly. I've heard this a million times and it's irritating as heck. Just click "Go To Checkout" at the bottom of the page. Couldn't get any easier. They don't 'sneak' anything in there. I always pay for exactly what I bought. BTW, I've never seen a webhost that didn't try to upsell other services. Privacy? Hosting? Email accounts? That's how all of them make their real money.

BTW, if you market products on the internet, don't you upsell, too? If not, you're losing out on a lot of money. Most of the WSOs here require you to go through at least 3 pages of upsells before you get to the download button.

Hi and thanks for your reply, I am alright with upsells, but i wished it was less in godaddy. Personally it is annoying when you have to hit the "no thanks" button 3 times just to renew your domain and i recall once when you buy a new domain from godaddy you'll have to untick something to avoid a special yearly charge? or something like that. I read many customers unsatisfied with that.

I have bought a couple of domains from namecheap last month because of the free who is guard( and I was thinking of sticking to them but still shopping for alternatives) and it was just a much better buying experience and managing my domains is just so much easier. Also the fact that its costly to make the domains private, I don't see the point sticking with godaddy.

The only reason i can think of using godaddy is the that they sometimes release great coupon codes where you can get .coms for as low as 99 cents. Other then that, I don't see much reasons to be with them.

IF you are going to have many domain names or websites, I recommend Hostgator. You can get a reseller account for under 30 bucks a month and you set your own MB requirements for your own sites and control them all from one cpanel within the reseller account. And, if you have storage and bandwidth left over, you can provide website hosting for people and make some money.

Go daddy lose money on every domain name registered they are a loss leader

its only the upsells that make them money, without them domain names would go back to being $100 instead of $10

I totally agree with you , it's funny when i hear marketers complaining about successful companies using successful methods. Just learn from godaddy and move on if it weren't making them boatloads of money they wouldn't be using that method.

Another vote for Namecheap here, though I also like Dynadot a lot.. If you don't qualify for their bulk pricing they're quite expensive though. Namecheap always has a coupon you can use to bring the price down.

As long as people keep on buying from upsells they'll always be around.

Sometimes you only get the great deal on the original purchase because of the upsells the marketer has put in place.

As a marketer would you not use them if they helped you increase sales?

Upsells bother you that much? Interesting. I would think that GoDaddy's ridiculous Terms Of Service would be more relevant in not wanting to use them. You couldn't pay me to use them as they are not IM friendly, despite what their high-cost ads state. Host Gator or Blue Domino are solid hosts I've been using for years.

I've gone to namecheap. There is always a new Discount Code every month so that you pay less on .coms and it comes with privacy protection for free. Best part is it doesn't put you through all those upsells and it is a lot easier to find the location to fill in the nameservers for your domain.

As for renewing your domains why are you doing it manually. If you just put a CC on file it will take care of it for you automatically. I know I have too many domains to have to play the manual renewal game.

I know what you mean. It takes 25 clicks to renew with Godaddy. They try to add junk like website builders into the cart without you knowing.

Plus they charge newbies 12 for a domain. Namecheap is $10 without coupons. After all, someone has to pay for the supper bowl commercials!

Namecheap also gives out the Whois guard for the first year which is nice.

    No brainer - use namecheap.com

I don't really care who anyone used but the statement quoted
above is just pure nonsense. I've been using GoDaaddy for many
years... I've never had to click 25 times to do anything and they've
never once tried to add anything to my cart without my knowledge.

As stated early in the thread... it's pretty easy to click the go to
checkout button and bypass the upsell process but you actually
have to be paying attention to what you're doing, I guess...

That... and NOBODY has better customer service than GoDaddy... NOBODY.

Namecheap sucks. Try getting them on the phone - you can't, because they don't give you a number to call.

Worst possible thing to entrust your domain name - the core of your online business - to a company that doesn't list a phone number.

Godaddy is the known devil here. Go with them.

Definitely Namecheap. I've never seen them do an upsell...you either want something or you don't. And if you don't pick it out, they aren't going to do it for you.

They have excellent customer service, good pricing, and they have lots of great deals and promos throughout the year. Aside from their domain registration services, I'm actually a bit curious as to how well their hosting stacks against the competition.

    Anyone have some insight?

I use 1and1 but the only drawback with them is you can't purchase a 10yr domain. Google likes sites with 10 yr domains. You can use both providers and run your operations with 1and1...which I will be doing soon. Only up-selling 1and1 does is e-mail (to me), which you can unsubscribe from.

I have been using Godaddy for years now and am very happy with them.

Bob and his team are very professional and they are very smart because they do a lot of their business with the upsells.

    Nothing wrong with that.

    Everyone does it.

You go to a coffee shop and you order a cup of coffee. Then the person behind the counter asks you if you want to add a doughnut with that order. That happens to me almost everyday.

You go to a Mcdonalds restaurant and you order combo #6. The lady asks you if you want a warm apple pie with that order. That is an upsell too.

So a lot of companies do this and this is normal.

I don't see why not if it makes the company MORE money.

If you get a cheap domain registration, you can pretty much bet that when it is time to renew, the registrar is going to get as much of the cost back as they can.

If you are looking at building a business based on a website, and the difference between starting a business and not starting a business is $9.00 or so, then you are more than likely in the wrong business.

I realize that was not the subject of the OP. But if your other expense is time, and you are only registering one domain, that amount of time is negligible. And it is easy to skip the upsell process. If you are registering a bunch of domains, then you would probably already be past the point where you would be making posts about GoDaddy's upsell process.

There are other reasons to go with other registrars. Diversity of portfoilo, TOS, interface design, previous bad experience, there could be a lot of reasons.

They are one of the top companies in terms of selling you upsells, though, and their process is an interesting experience that can be learned from.

And it helps to know what you need before you buy the domain, so you know what to avoid and what might prove to be of value.
