What is the average CTR for top spot in google?

Yeah, I was wondering if it exists. I am sure the capability is there for tracking, but not yet harnessed.

But anyone who has a website in the top position should know the ratio of searches per month on the search engine, and roughly how many visits to the page came from the search engine?

I am drawing up projected cash flow statement for raising capital, and there must be a way of understanding what % of the organic traffic for a search term clicks on the first link that pops up.

You want stats, tracking? Then get workin on google analytics, its free and can give you some darn good information on your visitors.

I will use analytics when we launch the new business, but just wondering if there is an average for planning purposes.

If not, I will just have to test before writing the plan and raising funds...

You want to do testing for a new business? New Niche? Then setup an adwords campaign and add an optin form and see how many people bite, use google analytics as well and get even more stats and that can help out in finding out if your idea can lead to future development of a business.

Thanks Mel. I am going to run adwords to test the market, but was hoping for something like Tenzo just said (40% of traffic average for top spot) so a guy can make some semi accurate future projections, and anticipate the ROI of my organic SEO.

This is all mostly for financial projections to get the capital for a roll out.
Projected and actual always turn out different, but hoped to get a ballpark.

there is no way to get total searches per month, if there was this tool would already exist

google keyword tools etc. are just really lame averages of historic data

I recently read that at the number one spot toucan expect to get about 40% of the search traffic. For the life of me, I can't remember where I read it, so I can't attest to the accuracy. For what it's worth.

I can tell you that during the 30 Day Challenge this year they used MarketSamurai, and it calculates traffic by assuming 50% CTR for the top spot in Google. I think that is about accurate.

You could possibly deduce this by doing the following:

1. Figure out what terms you're ranking for.
2. Set up a PPC ad (that's on the first page of results) to show up for those terms.
3). Link the PPC ad to a different landing page so you don't get 'duplicate' hits.

From there, you can count the exact number of impressions through your adwords account and use your server logs to see how many hits you got from the various KWs on your organic placement.

Then it's just a matter of simple math (divide the above latter by the above former).

Surely it is going to be affected by how the ads are placed. For some search terms they have those yellow ppc ad boxes at the top and for some they don't - I should imagine that makes quite a big difference.

It'll always be estimate, each keyword has different distribution from position 1 to 10.
If you want exact value:
1. You can use adwords campaign as imaddict said.
2. Dominate the first 10 and check you stats.
3. Send mail to top 10 webmaster. Said that you're college student doing survey for final project. Wondering if you can get cooperation with them for sharing statistic result.

How's that?

Now my question is, why would you want the exact number anyway.
Guess who see the first page of google result?
Human
... man/women/boy/girl/gay?
Even if you ended up in position 2/3/4. Work your brain and make "better" title and description.

when someone search for "dog training guide", which one will they click?
1. Dog training guide
2. Dog training guide are wasting your time
3...

Treat your page as ads.
