What to do with old product?

Hey guys,

Last year i was going to set up a blog on a specific niche and had a real in depth 100 page ebook written on the subject. However due to work and my focus on another product i never got around to using it - what can i do with it? Can i sell it somewhere as a whole book? Could i split the chapters into individual articles to sell?

I'm not too sure where to do this - is there a sub forum here perhaps i can do so?

thanks in advance!

There really are a number of things you could do with it.

    Here is what I'd do.

Set up a squeeze page and give away a chapter in return for an email address. Over the next few days, email the subscribers a little more content and then after a week or so, try to sell the book.

Another option if it's IM related is to set up a free WSO and give it away for email addresses.

Yet another option is to sell the PLR rights to it here on the forum in the WSO section.

    Just a few thoughts.

      Thanks Mike - great ideas.

Question... how to get traffic to a squeeze page? I understand SEO, but with a squeeze page there really isn't much copy up there to get me in a tiop spot for the niche... how would i do so?

The product is not IM related, it's an ebook all about model trains.

Ok, what if you created a facebook fan page related to model trains. You could then do some paid advertising in facebook that targets model train owners.

Get them to click on your ad and like your fanpage and set up an iframe with an opt in.

What do you think? I think that would work.

Nice idea! I will look into this. Thanks!

  • What niche is it in? I might interested in taking it off your hands.

    Hi:

    Shireen here :-)

    Here's what I'll do:

    1) create a minisite (outsource it to graphic designer)

    2) create a affiliate page

    3) put it on clickbank

    Or

    Sell it on eBay

Do you mean sell as many copies as you can? I would say no way on eBay. If you mean the complete rights to one person, that could be very interesting. Is that okay to do on eBay? Anybody? I'm assuming it would be considered 'intellectual property'?

I would think sending this out to a mailing list would be the most profitable, though. Include the best train offers in your newsletter with it and this. And, remember, these guys that collect trains usually have a lot of money to spend on their hobby.

All of the ideas mentioned are good ones. I guess it depends really on how much you have for a campaign.

Is the content old? Or, is the info still current? I'm betting model trains haven't changed too much in the past year, especially if you're dealing with older model trains.

Why not proceed with your original plan? Set up a blog, put up some content and offer the book for sale?

And build a list at the same time. Model trains are a good niche. Get a list of enthusiasts and that could be very worthwhile for you.

Dan's content is irregularly read by handfuls of people. Join the elite few by reading his blog: dcrBlogs.com, following him on Twitter: dcrTweets.com or reading his fiction: dcrWrites.com but NOT by Clicking Here!

Dan also writes content for hire, but you can't afford him anyway.

Info is very much current, yes.

There are several things you can do with this - my guess is that model trains are pretty much an evergreen niche so it probably wouldn't have gone out of date in a year.

    You can:

    1. Sell it as an e-book on Clickbank or PayDotCom.
    2. Create a Kindle edition and sell it on Amazon.com
    3. Create a hard-copy version and sell it via Amazon CreateSpace, or some other "print on demand" service. If the hard-copy version is successful, you can offer it to an offline publishing house and get it sold in bookshops.
    4. Convert it into a video - either PowerPoint and Camtasia or live action - and sell via website download, or burn it onto DVD and sell via Amazon CreateSpace or somewhere similar.
    5. Break it up into articles and/or blog content for your own use.
    6. Sell it as PLR content - either as an e-book or as PLR articles.
    7. Find some niche-related affiliate products and incorporate links into a "further reading" section at the end, then give it away as PDF.
    8. Use it as an inducement to get people to sign up to a model trains membership site.

Just a few things that come to mind. I'm sure there are more!

Since it seems large, you could break it up into smaller ebooks and sell them at a lower price. You would make more selling smaller ebooks than one large ebook.

      I would:

      1. Break it down into a bunch of articles and sell them to Associated Content (now Yahoo! Contributors Network) for NON-Exclusive rights. That'll earn you a quick $100-$200.

      2. Submit those same articles to Constant Content for usage rights only for some more extra cash.

      3. Upload it as a kindle book.

      4. Submit it as a Createspace book.

All fine ideas in my opinion but if the information is current why not just re-launch it? Ultimately the profits you get from a re-launch would be a lot more than you would get just selling it or giving it away.

There are plenty of marketers that have old products that sold well in the past and they simply re-launch it as if it were brand spanking new. You could do a "dime sale" where the price goes up by a certain amount every minute, a week long product launch to build anticipation, etc. The possibilities are endless really.
