Hi,

I joine dthis forum today started a thread and was asking about how to choose a niche and determine competition,(new to IM) I received 4 kind replies from some WF members today , however I am now stuck with not knowing how to do it. This is my very first time to do this, I am trying to enter either the food sector or health niches. for the food section I was thinking of BBQ stuff, e.g. sauces, accessories and may be a subniche e.g. BBQ sauce receipe, I then thought I should be more specific and chose BBQ sauce, when I typed it following one member's suggestion for google search link I found more than 4M sites appeared on this word, I narrowed it and again saw around 3M sites, does that mean I shouldn't enter this area for my affiliate marketing?

OK then I thought I should dumbed this niche and went for the next on my list(Teens depression) again some millions websites, narrowed it down for"Bipolar" and was also drowned with some 6M websites!!!! for the BBQ stuff and also my other options I couldn't figure out how to read competition level on the right side of google's page, or at least there was no number that I could see and read. one member informed me that the right section is for paid ads. I am sure I am doing this kind of readings all wrong, so can you guys direct me on how to figure out this?

Most importantly is this kind of kewword search also important if I want to be an amazon associate? I am lost on all this stuff for a long time now anyone esle who is more informed would have started their blog or website a long time ago. Can I just go a head and promote some amazon books without doing this boring google kewword? e.g. I think I can promote anything related to either mental health(have some knowledge since I have a biploar teen) and/or cooking/food related products.

I hope this kewword issues won't make me want to quit it all. I know I must know what I am exactly promoting and if they are too competitive or not, I just want your kind help since I am a single mother without health insurnce for my sick daughter who was an all "As' high school student and recently leaft school due to sickness. I desparately need some patients warriors to guide me along this journey, I can put efforts and try hard to work it if I am able to get some assistance though.
thank you very much in advance.
Patrica.

First, determine how many searches your keyword is getting using the Google Keyword tool.

Second, type your keyword into Google and then look at the first 10 results because that's all that really matters.

Review each site on the top 10 and see what they look like. Download the SEOBook plugin for Firefox and you'll be able to see how many backlinks the sites have.

If there are other sites with little content or few backlinks then it's a go. If not, try to drill down the keyword a little more.

For example, instead of teen depression, maybe try teen depression prevention or teen depression books or something like that.

The key point is that only the top 10 really matter. If you think you can do better than #10 then go for it.

Thanks, like I mentioned in my thread- I typed both niches and google was showing some millions pages for my e.g. first choice niche of BBQ accessories, I saw one grilling tool that I really liked and thought I could promote but I google resluted it for 5millions pages for the kewword I chose. so my question is: shall I count what only comes as "search results" only or are there any factors that I should also look into.
to be honest with you I have no idea how to do options you talked about in your reply b/c I don't know what is meant by them or how to do them, excuse my ignorance though, e.g. firefox?
when you say"only the top 10 pages really matter, does that mean I should ignore number of total results given by google(5M) and just click on the 10 top websites that came first and then brouce and see what are their contents? thank you once again for your kind help

Just don't expect to start earning money overnight, approaching a blog as a hobby that could earn some pocket change months down the road might be the most realistic approach. You need tons of traffic to earn much from the tiny Amazon commission, you might look higher paying affiliate products as you search for key words, one clickbank product can pay as much as 25 Amazon books.

Hubpages does revenue sharing of built in Amazon, Adsense and eBay ads. This might be a place to get your feet wet, although they just took a traffic hit from Google's Panda update. Hubpages assists you a bit in signing up with Amazon.

thanks, I agree, however, to me putting my foot on the right direction and making the correct start is more important now than how much commisssion I can start with. It's being now more than 3 months I am just stuck in one place'choosing my niche and how to figure out if it's profitable and how to run google kewword search". If I am able to just start then I think I can stwich to CB like you kindly adviced me and try to promote more profitable but related products. on the flip side if I don't even know how to push my car to let it move how can I make even the pocket money? thank you for your reply though.

Don't think too much at a time, just focus on this:

Setup a blog for a niche you love. Need some unique good content of user interest. Optimize it for traffic with some cool tips you can easily find by searching Google. Monetize it with any affiliate program or ad network. Go & look for traffic with quality ways such as article marketing, social media marketing, etc. Keep doing it for few days, see the results & analyze the impact and then go ahead and think deeper.

        Hope this helped.

Firstly - don't believe that mythical figure that Google produces for the number of results. If you find a serious keyword that you want to investigate further, click through the results pages to see how many there really are.

For example - I've just Googled "home treatment for bipolar disorder" - G claims " About 3,430,000 results" if you don't use the quote marks.

But if I click through to page 75 (10 results per page) I see this "In order to show you the most relevant results, we have omitted some entries very similar to the 749 already displayed." That's normal. The figure G quotes initially is just make belief and I never understand why people bother about it.

If you look at those 749 you will find very few are competing for the entire phrase.

So - you need to find a good keyword that is a sub-niche. Bipolar (as an example) is too broad. Find something much more tightly defined. There will be fewer searches but you stand a better chance of ranking well and getting those people to your site.

The Google keyword tool is good - put in your main keyword and then look to see what other suggestions it comes up with. Look for search volume and then look for "competition". This gives you an idea of how many people are prepared to PAY to run an adwords campaign around this keyword. You are looking for a buying keyword - and people won't run adwords unless they believe that they will get paying customers.

Once you've identified some paying keywords, head to amazon, ebay, clickbank, ejunkie etc and find a product that fits.

          Now start building your site.

          Hope some of that helps
