Can "Pushovers" Make It Online?
Everyone always talks about Karma, and "one good deed..." - all that stuff. But, lately I really feel frustrated by how many times I end up getting taken advantage of because I am maybe a bit of a pushover, or whatever you would like to call it.
Basically, I always end up trying to help people out - usually out of the goodness of my heart, and when I can't afford it myself - but then get left dangling!
In the past year, I have donated to Warriors who have needed it - and I definitely didn't have a lot to spare - because that is just the way I am. I have offered to get services done for me that I may not have really needed at that time, but paid for them anyway in the hopes of helping someone out.
I have tried to help others through some coaching of technical things, showing what I knew and trying to help them learn. I am not a technical genius, but can help show people the basics, which is what I have done. I never asked for much for payment, and would take small amounts as they could afford it.
But, today I just sat here and realized that in the past year, I think my kindness may have been taken advantage of a bit too much and it is time for me to rethink how I will do business in 2009.
Here is just some of the stuff you should know to really understand what I mean: I have work that I have hired out to a girl for some graphic work done. I had used her before and I knew she was just getting started, so wanted to help her out (she is good). She takes days to get back to my simple emails, and it has been 2 weeks with nothing yet for me to see.
I got a chargeback today through Paypal for some basic tutoring that I have been doing for months - only for $40, but that sadly was all I had in my Paypal account at the time. It was for a payment I had received in November - no reason. I have never asked for payment from them - only when they could afford it, so I would get paid from time to time. The time I put in and the amount of little extras I have done for them is so much more than what I really ever got paid, but again, I thought I was helping someone out who needed it.
So - the $40 I had from doing a small writing job so that I could pay for the Offline Gold seminar - gone.
On top of that, I have other stuff that I have outstanding from people, which I won't even go into.
Have you just ever felt completely taken advantage of? I have given out copies of products I am selling to people whenever I see they might need it - and never asked for payment.
So - as I read this, I realize that I am a complete pushover, and it may be time for me to turn that around. I have always tried to live how I was raised, and maybe I am a bit naive and overly sensitive to people in trouble, but I don't see how I can change that.
I just got my first offline work, and I am hopeful that I can take my business in this direction in the new year. I just hope I can keep from getting stepped on out there too!
Anyway - any tips on how to help me be stronger in the New Year, without having to have a complete personality change?
