buying a domian name for one site and hosting it one another?

Is it okay to buy a domian name on one site and switching it to another? do you have to pay both sites every month? or is the first site just going to charge you for just buying it. I know it don't make sense for them to charge you but I just want to know. I buy from namecheap.com for the WhoIsGaurd, and I host the site on bluehost.com.

You can point the domain name to your hosts nameservers if thats what you mean. For the domain name, you only have to pay yearly. I use 1and1 for my domains and Hostgator for my hosting site.

Registering your domain name in one place and hosting it on another is a really good idea to keep your entire business spread out so it is not at the mercy of one particular company.

It's common practice to purchase a domain name from an entity separate from your host. I purchase all of my domains through namecheap.com and host them with fatcow.com. All you have to do is login to namecheap and change the nameservers for that domain to the nameservers for your HOST, then login into your hosting control panel and "add an existing domain" to your account and set up a subdirectory where your site files will be stored. Too easy.
