Do you build sites about what you are interested in or about what you think will make money?

As time goes on I have been getting this creeping realization that I am fed up writing about subjects that I neither know nor care about just because it looks like there might be a market out there and not that much competition. This has been brought into sharp focus for me with recent Google updates suggesting that search results will favour quality content.

So I have decided to build an authority site based on a topic that I am actually genuinely interested in and monetize it in a number of ways. I am not entirely convinced that this is a buying niche, but I am giving a go anyway.

What comes first for you? Finding a non competitive buying niche or write about what you are actually interested in??

Both. If you have an interest in something, its a good bet others might. So, sell to them.

It's all about the money, so that I can go off and do the things that really do interest me. My writers are all professionals, and I could care less about any of the products themselves. In fact, I have never even used them myself, don't know much about them nor have any real desire to do so. Passion can be outsourced.

Most of the niches that I'm involved with are niches that I have no interest in. That's where I make the money so being interested doesn't matter to me. If anything my interest lies in the process of researching and building niche sites rather than the niche itself. But I have entered niches and once I learn more I develop an interest.

You can write quality content about almost any subject, if not you can hire a good copywriter so I don't think the Google update makes any difference in that respect.

        • I do both. I build sites on stuff I am interested in, just for fun. But then I also research niches that i can take advantage of. I'm sure you can make money either way. It just depends on the niche, competition, wether its saturated or not etc.

I think that if you make sies about what you are interested in, you are more likely to go through with it, and it is easier to come up with content on things you like and know about. But it depends, because if you outsource your content that wouldn't really matter. I'm sure both ways are profitable if you know your stuff.

I will build sites in any niche I think I can rank and make conversions, it's as simple as that for me.

I'll never promote a product or offer which I haven't at least spoken to an actual user about or I can find some reliable third party reviews - but if the products good I'll go where the money is.

If it's a niche I'm passionate about or something I'm interested in then writing the content is an awful lot easier and I have a lot to say but these make up a small majority of my sites.

I agree with this. It's always better when you enjoy doing something and can make some money off of it at the same time.

I have no interest in spending any of my precious time trying to create income in areas I have no interest in - so I only focus on things I have an interest in.

    Works for me.

I also like to do sites that I have an interest in. I have writers that do most of my writing for me, so I don't have to write hundreds of pages with the same subject. Even so I find it helpful to do sites that I enjoy. I also seem to make more money that way.

I have some form of interest in all of my sites. Makes it easier to write my own content. Now if I ever decide to go hog wild and create the ultimate adsense network (if that can still even done in 2011) then I would simply outsource it--especially for topics where I have no clue on how to begin.

I try to find the medium... I won't create a product that im not interested in or hate but It is sometime hard to find a topic that you like and isn't over populated or simply to difficult to pack into a video series or whatever...

That is the great thing about all of this, there is a happy medium somewhere.

I think if your more engaged in stuff you like, your marketing and messaging and advertising comes out alot more clearer, that gives you more chance to profit on the front end and backend i guess.

I try to find a balance. I do some projects where I have NO interest in the the topic, and some where I do have an interest. The projects I'm interested in are usually easier to finish, but in most cases they make less money

Try to combine both if possible. Long term, it will make your life easier and more rewarding, and probably make you more money since you won't get bored with it.

I have domains that I have purchased to use for the topics I like but they always fall to the bottom of the priority list in favor of those that make money.

I will get to them eventually, I hope.

Find a balance between the two. Find a profitable niche that you are passionate about. If you enjoy what you are doing then you will be profitable. Popular niches work the best and if you are already an expert you stand a better chance of 90% of your competitors who know nothing about the niche!

This. I am totally bored to tears writing about Forex and dog training even though they are profitable. So I think the key is to find something that you enjoy and then see if it's worthwhile monetizing as a micro niche. I mean, you may enjoy writing about Paleolithic Moss, but I'm pretty sure there's no market for it :p

    Both.
If you have an interest, your writing will prove to be better and you'll be more knowledgeable in your niche. Sometimes you may need to make a site that you may not be completely interested in.

I used to go for the money... but maybe had a little interest in...

However, my two most successful niche sites are about two things I know a ton about and can talk easily about. I waited a long time before starting those sites and they were an instant hit... I'm an idiot for not doing it sooner, lol.

    Good Luck

My main focus is in the one major niche that I am genuinely interested in. I have two other small sites that are in niches I don't really care about, but I did take my time to educate myself on the subject matter. I have since abandoned those two projects to keep my focus on my main objective - product creation.

I just went for the money but I finally started a site around a niche im interested in.

It's moving up up the ranks just fine but there are competitors in this niche with million dollar pockets. Tons of freebie seekers.

I still have my other sites but just thought I'd start this one as it dont feel like work but more like sharing on a topic I know well.

Will see how it goes in 3 more months.

I've never been able to keep up the enthusiasm for anything I'm not interested in. I tried the old 'Reverse Phone Lookup' stuff when I first started and didn't make a penny. It wasn't until I made my own products in niches I'm actually interested in, that it started to work out for me.
