What according to you should one focus completely on to start generating high quality website traffic?

Article marketing, SEO, social media marketing, PPC advertising, ad swaps, email advertising, etc?

Content is still the king, should article marketing considered the best way for a newbie to start attracting quality traffic for his/her site?

Thanks for all replies in advance, hope to help tons.

Cheers
Ciel!

That depends on your budget and your personal skill set/ interest in a strategy...
If you are on a tight budget , and think you can write well , then article marketing is the best way to go ..but if you have a budget to spare , then PPC is effective..

The answer will depend on analyzing your budget and your personal strengths!

My advice is to not focus on one thing... one is the loneliest number (and the most dangerous). The more traffic you can get from different places the better.

I agree nothing beats good, quality content. So start with that and make sure you over-deliver on content. This in turn will help your SEO efforts. Then move on to other paths from there... articles, videos, social media, etc.

Paid advertising is a whole different ballgame... proceed with caution.

I would say to focus on one method at a time though...I've been struggling through the traffic quagmire for a while, doing a little bit of everything and not getting much return.

I'm currently SEOing a site by outsourcing all my backlinks whilst trying to attract affiliates to bring in sales now...waiting for results from SEO hurts my brain.

Most definitely... I guess I worded that wrong. Focus on one at a time with intentions to move on to another technique when you're satisfied with the first.

Though it's true that the more traffic you can get from different sources the better, it's also NOT smart to start just doing a lot of multiple things at once if you've never done them. It's actually best to master one traffic technique and make sure it's working for you first before you start using another one. As each one works out for you then add another one.

I agree focusing completely on one method is dangerous. Article marketing for me is the number 1 and takes time but also the benefit is once they are out there they keep on working - i have one article thats had over 6000 views just in Ezinearticles. But do them all

PPC to get traffic quickly - if you can invest ...

Article Marketing also works but is a strategy that generates results in the medium and long term - not to mention that you need to write many articles. You will need dozens of articles scattered throughout direcories articles to generate results ...

But it is work that needs to be done.

Write a free ebook can also be a good idea. An ebook can help build their status as "expert" in his area of expertise. Is also a long-term strategy.

Yeah email marketing is good like enzines but i should also encourage you to work in getting quality backlinks pointing to your website. That can also attract visitors. The more links you have pointing to your website the more visitors you'll attract.

Diversity is key as others have said. You don't want to put all of your eggs/links in one basket to wake up the next morning and find that Google has slapped your one once golden method and your traffic dries up overnight. I recently did a post on 70+ traffic sources. There's a lot of ways to get traffic if you think outside of the box, tho admittedly that's a worn cliche.

Social networks, social media, article marketing, Q&A sites, forums, blogs, email marketing, paid (just to name a few).

It depends on your niche and your specialty.

Your traffic methods should depend on what you are promoting.

If you have a niche site, kinda like selling physical products or digital products, you need organic search engine rankings. To do this, you can do article marketing or Google Adwords PPC. With PPC, you need to learn how to target your audience to increase your conversions. So its not really about the method, but the proper use of a traffic generation method to get higher conversions.

If you have an authority site in the IM niche where you need to brand yourself, social media marketing is the best way to go since you rely on your social rankings and feedback for the lifeblood of your business.

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers,

Forum marketing works for me. What's better than meeting people who are interested in a particular and giving them what they want? For me that's the winner.

Personally, I think PPC is the best way to attract buying traffic. Certain organic keywords can convert as well or better, but PPC is just better overall, albeit obviously more expensive.

  • 1.)pick a short term, medium term and a long term strategy.

2.)Brake them down into baby steps that you can do daily

    3.)then do them!

Short term... maybe get active in your niche specific forum, then post your link in your signature. Maybe even place a ppv/ppc advert on that forum

medium term... articles (and press releases- try prweb.com, but it costs about $100)

long term... create several free blogs on sites such as blogger.com, weebly.com and a lense on squidoo. Update these at least twice a week. Start trying to create a mailing list using aweber. Offer to send them new blog posts and articles straight to their inbox.

    Just a couple of ideas...

Outsourcing needs to be mentioned. You can only do so much on your own and PPC is a blackhole that sucks up your money at light speed if you are not very very careful.

So try something you see a lot of people reporting success to get traffic. Prove it to yourself by getting a little bit of traffic using that method. Then go find someone else to do it for you as inexpensively as possible and take your newly freed up time to start learning/testing the next traffic source that a lot of people say works.

Go at it systematically like that and pretty soon you'll have several traffic streams. As long as you can more than cover your outsourcing expenses, it's just a matter of scaling up from there. Be the business owner, not the worker bee.
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[3844264].message }}
  • I agree with majority of what others said about not putting all your eggs in one basket. You probably want to everywhere and each methods have different advantages in both short and long term.

However, I see that not many there suggested VIDEO MARKETING too much as of yet, so let me be the one to tell you not to overlook this.
Videos in my opinion, have HUGE branding power and a way to connect with your audience at a whole new different level.

Maybe its just my ego getting the best of me again, but believe me, video can have the potential of making you into a superstar in front of your audience and combined with a good Social Media strategy, could ultimately mean more traffic that is targeted and also giving you a bit more credibility.

And seriously, they are not hard to do. Just crank up a 3 minute video giving a quick tip about whatever industry you're trying to help - and do this like 3-5 times a week.

Don't get me wrong, I do adopt both Article Marketing and PPC strategies, but personally, Video Marketing was only just recently one of those 'get-out-of-my-comfort-zone' tasks that I am personally happy about and they get easier and easier the more you do them. Who cares if you're a noob in front of the camera (heck, I still am), what counts is that you have the guts to show your face in front of your target audience so they connect with you.

Go grab yourself a simple Flip camera for like 200 bucks and start being a superstar!

Then you treat your video submitting like you do articles (as in, you still submit them to directories and such. Or you can use TrafficGeyser or something to submit them but this is a paid service, I think). The important thing is that you add Video Marketing to one of your strategies because they really dont take that long if you know your market intimately.

But of course, yet again, focus on other areas too and as others said, it depends mainly on your strengths and budget.

Oh and one last thing, it does take practice. So don't be discouraged in the early going.

most people think about traffic as a bunch of clicks to their site.
this is crap. a waste of time. and simply boring my friend.

No, instead think about what kind of people do you want visiting your site.
think about the people who are DYING to buy what you have and who DESPERATELY need it....

think about "If I were a person who needed my service, what would I type in to google and where would I go?"

Put your message where your prospects are already going...

I know it sounds simplistic, but if you think about it this way, you won't be like everybody else just trying to do every traffic source, no, instead you'll be strategic and you'll find traffic sources that no one else uses and it won't make sense to others but it will make perfect sense to you...

did you know that the big dogs use traffic sources that no one talks about here?

for example: "ads on plenty of fish.com" etc.

The single best (free) traffic source I've ever found is targetting long tail keywords for blog titles. One a day, and then spending the rest of the day promoting that post. A lot of that can be automated, with services such as Onlywire, ping.fm and other software, etc. but if you know your niche and do basic keyword research you can get a TON of traffic very easily, because outside of the MMO/Dating/Sex/Weight Loss type of mega niches, everybody is targeting for the short tail (if that's even a term), but that's not what people are usually searching for.

I agree with this method. It's awesome. Don't forget to promote each page with some backlinks as suggested. I'm getting dozens of pages in a site ranking on page 1 for long tail keywords resulting in traffic trajectory.

My biggest failing is not promoting each new post as well as I should. I really like writing and keep cranking out content (I start an article and before I know it, I'm writing a 5 article series). But, the posts I've spent time promoting get by FAR the most traffic assuming I did proper keyword research.

In time you'll build a large blog attracting a lot of visitors. I do a mix of posts - reviews of products I use, info-based posts, tutorials, chart-style posts (these work really well) that compare products/services, etc.

Absolutely. It was pretty unbelievable to me when I first started out but now I realize people are always typing in extremely long keywords when they are ready to buy. What I mean is that you can target short keywords like

      wedding cakes

... or you can target buying keywords like "best wedding cakes austin texas." Believe me, people are typing that in when they want to find what to buy and even longer keywords like "best wedding cakes custom made austin texas free delivery"!

Thanks for your replies, much appreciated.

After going through the replies, I must say:

There are free & paid ways of attracting quality traffic but you need to find that works for you. Obviously if you can invest then paid ways are better (I not only mean here PPC but you can outsource your best way of generating targeted traffic). You want to invest your time & money in those methods that gives you highest ROI.

There are many methods, you should focus on one at a time that works well for you. Just like 'player87' said, the best place to get targeted traffic is to think about where you customers are at.

Also for newbies, don't directly get into a method because its working for others. If its working well for others that doesn't mean it will work for you as well. And yes, every free method takes time & even paid methods need planning & optimization otherwise you will risk your investment.

Thanks once again Warriors for all those awesome replies, I know these are helping out many. Go through the posts above & choose the one that works for you.

      Cheers

  • Hi Ciel. What I'd do is hang out where my target online consumer markets regularly hang out so I can build my reputation as a friendly, niche-expert resource of beneficial content, products and services, so as to get the chance to build mutually beneficial relationships with my target markets and possible joint venture partners...

Assuming your keyword research strategy is effective, Google each of my target keywords. I'd then pinpoint the top 10 online social communities with top ranking discussion pages for each of my target keywords, i.e. Web forums, blog networks, social networks and other online social communities with large volumes of members included in my target online consumer markets...

I'd then go to those online communities and study relevant discussion threads to know the exact needs and problems of my target online consumer markets that are relevant to my target niches/topics/keywords as well as the solutions they tried out and the results they got. I'd then use these details to implement an updated keyword research campaign...

I'd then develop product and/or service offers on my website providing benefits lacking from other solutions in the market as well as from my onsite content. Those product and service offer pages will have an easy ordering system, secure payment options and I'd attach convenient product and/or service offer guarantees, warranties and freebies. I'd then develop newsletters, mailing list updates and a freely downloadable digital info product upon mailing list signup offering benefits not found elsewhere nor from my onsite content. I'd then develop onsite content for my website providing benefits not found elsewhere nor from my content contributions in those top 10 online social communities frequented by large volumes of my target online consumer markets. I'd then register as a member of those top 10 online social communities, update my profile pages, including photos/images and the URL of my website, then constantly contribute beneficial content in the form of info, advice, tips, strategies and techniques not found elsewhere and yet to be mentioned in relevant discussion threads in those online social communities...

I like to do article marketing.

It's a good idea to write a series of informative and helpful articles (on ezinearticles, for example) related to a subject that YOUR prospects would be interested in learning.

    This achieves two things:

    1) It qualifies readers to be more receptive to whatever it is you offer. They feel more comfortable in the subject matter, and are thus more receptive to your expertise because they feel a little bit more informed as to what they should do.

    2) By providing your link at the bottom, you'll attract traffic that was just learning about a subject related to the service you offer. This means that the subject will be fresh in their mind, and they will be more likely to want to try it out by clicking your link.

Just make sure your byline gently urges the reader to click.

If you're a newbie, I suggest starting with "free" methods: SEO, article marketing, blog commenting (on blogs related to your niche of course), forums, facebook fan page, web 2.0 properties like Squidoo, Hubpages, blogger, etc. These are called free because you don't have to pay to get them up and running but it's time consuming, so it's not completely free!

For paid advertising, you NEED to learn, monitor, test and optimize. It's crucial that you know exactly what you're doing because if not you can loose money very quickly. My favorite tactics are PPC and FB ads.

I wouldn't do that for the long term. What would you do if for any reason your rankings fall tremendously?

As many other marketers said on that thread, I think that the key is diversity. If one of your traffic source drops for any reason (and be sure that this happens more than once) your business won't collapse all of a sudden. You'll just get a bit less traffic but you'll have time to repare while still making money!

Theres a lot that has already been mentioned in the post.I would like to add that off late there has been surge in the socializing aspect. So,make sure youu website is visible in appropriate categories in social bookmarking sites,Making a Facebook page and building true followers, though it might counted on fingers to start with. And a twitter base as well is a great way to market.Professional Press releases is a great way to reach target traffic, though many people arent aware of the press releases as a marketing method,a well written and distributed press release can be significant boost to the website's traffic and its PR as well.

According to my experience the best way is article marketing because you have a chance to get free link juice from people who put your article in their website.

If you want the fastest way you can try blog commenting in high PR blog. But not PR for root domain but PR in the page that you will put your link and your link MUST be doFollow, sound [black] [hat]? yes it is thats why I am not recommending it because if moderator doesn't like your link, they will delete your comment.

Social media is our key for traffic, NOt just twitter and facebook places like the following

    Youtube
    Netlog
    myspace
    tagged
    okuul
    reddit
    stumbleupon ect,

SEO is good but like many have mentioned their are so many factors to get the best results. The best advice is funnel traffic like some have mentioned by
    Article Marketing (excuse my spelling)
    Joint venturing
    LIst building
    mini sites
    linkbuilding

    Hope that usefull,

If your niche has some high traffic forums, they are one of the absolute best ways to generate some instant traffic to your website. Since most forums are constructed around niches, the traffic is generally reasonably targeted.

If you've chosen a niche you are passionate about, just by talking about something you enjoy, you'll build credibility and traffic to your website through proper use of forums.

I can tell you that article marketing and social media marketing act as a way to create your personal brand. Forget about your product for a little bit and concentrate on you and promoting you. Build trust and the rest will follow. But of course, this takes work and dedication. Take action everyday!

Thanks for each & every valuable reply, I really appreciate.

Now let's add a new way of getting targeted traffic (as many were pointing):

Build your brand & your own following in the niche you are targeting for your online business. You can do this by using social media sites, forums, article marketing, etc. Once you have a brand value, others will love to get whatever you have to offer.

A long term yet effective strategy for building a successful online business.

And for those who are worried about SEO, instead of focusing on SEO & rankings, focus on quality content (whatever value, service, product you are delivering to your target audience) & you will never fall short of organic search traffic. I will soon release a free report for my list which will show you how Google look into this matter (Google guys are leaking this report literally).

Report is based on input from Google staff, analysis of last few changes in Google algorithm over the years & their effects on websites.

Keep an eye on this thread.

      Cheers to all

its not a good idea for a newbie to start off with ppc advertising, instead for no i think you should be focusing on getting your content out. the reason why i say this is because if your site is not manually submitted to directories social networks etc , when you money run out the visitors will stop come as well, this will leave you in return very frustrated so as for now you need to go out and write some articles post book marks and so on. Just stick to methods that are not cost friendly for right now.
