You don't have to agree with what he is selling but it's still a great example how to cash in quickly with big news events.

I find that whole thing distasteful but I guess some people will want to learn from the fact that he made money - if it was IM he would now be a Guru.

Yeah this isn't uncommon, I have a funny t-shirt website (nothing like this though) and it's not unlikely for other t-shirt companies whose mailing list I'm on to send out an email for related tshirts on the same day as the incident.

I'm not too bothered about people making fun of Bin Laden's death (if it even happened, but that's for another thread) but what really pissed me off was a site mailing out for their 'anti-pedo' tshirts celebrating on the day Michael Jackson died - What is wrong with people! I remember replying back to that broadcast too

Sorry, need the whole story. Just debating this with my wife heavily also.

So he runs home, gets the domain and gets the site up at 3:30am in the morning. T-Shirts via Zazzle....CHECK

My question is: How did he get TRAFFIC to the site, how did he spread word about his site?

I mean, you can make a zillion sites....but people dont simply come to the site if they dont know it. THIS is what i want to know..how did he spread word about his site?

Had to have been heavy PPC - adwords, facebook, etc. There probably wasn't much bidding competition for these keywords since it was so new, not to mention not too many ways to monetize something like this besides apparel, surveys, etc.

That thought crossed my mind, too, briefly. But considering how extremely
viral that story was, and the sentiment it stirred, it seems a novelty item
like that would get heavy word of mouth advertising pretty fast.

If he has friends on FB, something so hot like that news would only need a
      jump start to take off.

Kudos to him for taking decisive action.

There are numerous ways he could do that.
    Adwords
    Twitter
    Facebook
    Media Buys
    Other Social Media

He probably is also good at getting indexed fast and probably used a combination of all of the above.

I have a hard time buying into this story. We're pulling in great money every month but we're constantly fighting paypal and our merchant account providers for increases. Last month we went from $50k in sales to $78k (and yes we do have screen shots to prove this) and we had half of our accounts temporarily shut down because of the increase. So we had to fax all kinds of stuff to them including invoices to prove the purchases were legit. SO how in the heck can someone make that kind of cheese right out the gate?

Yeah, that is my question as well and the most important piece of the puzzle.

It wasn't SEO. The site wouldn't have been indexed that quickly or ranked very well to begin with.

The product was sold through zazzle which could have been enough to jump-start the product and start a viral buzz.

    Adwords? Possibly.

Something to think about while waiting for the next BIG EVENT.

That's one market he can have. I would not want to be on those insane terrorists "todo" list.

who is the #1 terrorist now? dam*, I should not mention this, someone may register his related domain already!

come on, how many times this kind of things can happen in our life? how many people are competing for these things? looks like keep doing my daily job may have a better chance to make me some money. oh, well, maybe just me.

I could see why some would be offended, but I gotta say I wish I thought of it. This is a prime example of jumping on something while it's hot. The guy may not have a lot of long term success but he's sure got a nice pile of money to work on a future project.
