5% opt-in on a squeeze page? What's Wrong?

Hi Warriors,

First off, thanks for all the great discussion going on here. I'm new to internet marketing and listening in has been invaluable.

I've been bouncing around from one type of landing page to another for the last two weeks or so (I launched 3 weeks ago & started with a long salesletter, then a video sales letter (which nobody watched), then to an squeeze page. But, alas, the squeeze page a launched 7 days ago is only making 5% conversion (1 out of first 20) from Adwords.

How can I start getting good opt-in's on this page? Page is at
comediansresource.com/howtostandupcomedycourses

Any advice much appreciated!

Thanks

I'm in no way shape or form an expert on squeeze pages. But I've been looking at a lot of them lately. And right off the major differences I see

    1. others usually focus on 1 download/eBook and several of it's benefits
    2. everything tends to stay "above the fold" in a short and sweet no need to scroll down fashion.
    3. they usually have an image of the eBook to be downloaded. I guess it helps people get the "feeling" of tangibility.
    4. in that image they'll also portray the eBook with a title that suggests a major benefit or solution for the reader like "how to..." or "10 Steps to..." as if it were the title of the book.
    5. in the main "sales" text the benefits are in a larger font size
    6. the "Get Instant Access" would be the call to action on the button rather than "subscribe".
    7. everything is tightly focused on making only 1 decision.
I'd try to keep it as simple as possible. Simple for you and a no brainer for them.

You could consider knocking down the freebies from 4 to 1 eBook. Then when they optin you can do a One Time Offer for the other 3 remaining books for $xx. That way you can recoup ad costs.

But that's just my opinion. As I said I'm no expert.

Yes. All content is completely original in the eBooks. I only have one PLR eBook called "Comedian Quick-Start Guide", but I'm considering writing my own because I can't give the PLR away for free.

Am I correct in assuming you've had all of 20 clicks so far to this squeeze page? You'll need much more targeted traffic to test this out properly.

The sales copy itself is far too wordy. Your headline is far too weak and not focused enough. In short no potential stand up comedian is going to take this page seriously. It screams lack of credibility and trust.

A squeeze page should be converting at least at 40%.

Ruthless editing is what this needs. A complete makeover of your squeeze page copywriting. And graphics too. Keep it benefit driven and to the point for your target audience.

How much will it run to? $50 and it's got your name on it.

          Email address is below...

Thanks for the info, I've already checked out the website.

In the past I've been hesitant to use these services (chalk it up to naivete). In your experience, have they been cost effective? How much does good copy usually run?

Rashell has pointed out most of the basics of any squeeze page. One thing I disagree with is taking 3 ebooks off the page. Anymore one ebook isn't enough to get an email.

There is way too much information on this page though. Find a way to get your point across with fewer words.

Another thing you're overlooking which may be a large factor in why it's not converting is the traffic you're sending to it. We would need to look at your AdWords ad, headline, body text and link. Also, what keywords are you targeting for this ad?

One more thing... "72 Comedians Are Spilling The Biggest Secrets In Stand-Up Comedy" isn't a good headline. Where's the benefit in that? This is too vague... it's not even targeting comedians. It's more of a news headline.

Take one of your best bullet points below and turn that into a headline that will appeal to stand-up comics.

You've gotten some great advice in this thread in some of the posts above, though I think most have overlooked the part I've quoted above.

If I understand correctly, you're basing your 5% conversion on the fact that you've gotten 20 visitors so far and only one of them has signed up. That is hardly a large enough sample size to draw any conclusions from. You need AT LEAST 500 visitors, ideally 1000, to determine a stable conversion rate.

Right now, you got 1 out of 20, you may not get another single one with the next 100, but then all of the sudden you may get 50 altogether... so it just completely depends and you have to build a sample size of 500-1000 first (depending on how much clicks you can afford, 1k is ideal in my experience though 500 will give you a decent idea if you're on a budget). After that you can split test different things (use Google website optimizer) and see how you can improve.

If you start playing with your page right now, when you only have 20 clicks, and you keep changing it every 20 visitors, you'll never have a clear idea of what works and what doesn't since you're changing it so quickly.

I used to get everything on comedy and comedians when I first got online. So I relate to your stuff. Agree with others though, there's too much on the page for starters.

All the big unattributed quotes at the bottom should go.

I'd still have four "Comedy Guides" as Duston says to up value, but everything else should go. Consider re-naming the Guides as well. Get ALL four guide descriptions above the fold and use images, as mentioned also.

Possible Head -off the top of mine):

"I'll Trade You 4 Top Standup Comedy Guides For Your Email...and Throw In A Subscription To My Comedy Newsletter as Well"...I'm Limiting this Offer To The Next 150 Future Comedians" ...Will You Be One?"

Your page is too busy and long. Opt-in needs to be above the fold. The small print is too small. All the quotes at bottom of page are without value.

Also, I didn't "FEEL" anything as I read. Maybe this is because I don't have any interest in being a comedian, but from my experience great copy will at the very least make me consider the offer.

My advice: MAJOR REWRITE. Concentrate on cleaning out all the stuff you don't need and focus on making your headline and bullets AMAZING. And amazing can just mean it appeals to the person who needs what you have. NEEDS. DESIRES. If you can't identify the NEEDS/DESIRES in your market find someone who can.

I'm not an expert on squeeze pages, but two things spring to mind that might shed some light on your low opt-in rate.

    (1) It's rather long. To be honest, this strikes me more as a "sales page with an opt-in" than a squeeze page. Consolidate the info that's there, in any way you can. Short and sweet is the aim of the game, I think.

    (2) Your opt-in form, on my laptop, isn't above the fold, and the fact that your background is dark subtracts from the prominence of your opt-in. Make it bigger, position it better, change the opt-in colour to make it stand out more and/or remove your dark background. Other than the headline, the opt-in form should be the most prominent element on the page.

Oh ... and if you're using PPC to drive traffic, then you might want to review the keywords you're using in your campaign and reword your advertisements. You could have the best squeeze page in the world, but if your traffic isn't that targeted (because you're using the "wrong keywords" or your ads are misleading or not too relevant), it's not going to convert too well.
