Privacy Concern With Google! Must read!!

Hi all,

Yesterday i searched my full name on google to see what results show up? I was suprised by what i found!

I discovered on the first page google shows results for the domain names i own, "whois details". Not only that it displays my address aswell which is something i'm not happy with.

Does anyone know how to deal with this "whois" situation?

Thank you

    It's not a Google problem.

When you register a domain it's quite natural that the domain owner info is published online. That makes sense, of course. Why would a business owner or a web site owner want to remain anonymous - unless he's doing BlueFart stuff or screwing customers?

But if you don't like the idea, with many top level domains you can chose to register your domain with services that offer privacy.

EDIT: lol, this is hilarious, I never wrote the bluefart thing. :-)

Just too add to your point...Anything that you do online you have to realise that it is recorded and tracked somewhere and someone can find it. If you put your address in a form, assume it might get public, if your search for things your mother would not be pround of, assume it is recorded somewhere. If your connected to the net, your connected to everything.

If your an online marketer imagine how much info google has on your life. Searches, address, personal info etc.

Tell that to the parents of a predator who tracked down family members by amalgamating common information that they posted on the internet under the misunderstood guise of being safe information.

Any parent who posts information/photos of their children online on an unprotected site is a fool - no other word for it. Yet people do it all the time. I know parents who are proud of their kid's "computer knowledge" - and don't think to track computer use to see what the kid is doing online. Not smart at all.

But that has nothing to do with being in business online. If you are working online, you are selling something whether products or information. Like any business, you disclose your location.

Your physical address is not a secret but you can use private registration of a domain. Chances are if you are on Facebook you've given out much more personal info than when registering a domain.

Use the whois protection. Some domain name registrars offer it for free while others ask you to pay a nominal fee.

If you're referring to whois details it's mandatory for all domain you can however protect your address with a whois guard which is whta I use for my domains.

It's generally free for some host and aroudn $10-$20 for other hosts. Search around and do a search free whois guard domain registrar and you should be able to find quite a few.

Even if you're already "out there", so to speak, updating the whois now will do nothing. You're already in the cache and any archiving service that has decided to run archives of whois/etc. We're in the information age, brotha! That's how it is!
As far as the whois? I put in a fictitious address/phone # that mirrors what the standard protection service looks like on some of my domains. Here's a hint: Nobody knows, nobody CARES, and nobody could do anything about it if they DID! Leave a good, valid email address for the admin email though b/c this is the only real legitimate use of the whois details (mainly for x-fers)
    Good luck,

Did you perhaps overlook a notice about your WhoIs subscription expiring or did you never have one? Either way, as others have pointed out, this one can't be pinned on Google.

In the future, aside from having WhoIs protection on all of your domain names, consider renting a mailbox to use for your business address and use a separate phone number (you can get a virtual number for free) for business, as well. You'll also benefit from doing business as an LLC as opposed to doing so as a sole proprietor. With an LLC, a business address and a business telephone number, whether you have WhoIs protection or not, your personal information will not be published (and anywhere where a personal name is needed on a form, you may want to use your first initial and last name or something like that).

I have a very common name, so it takes a while to find me just by Googling my name. I'm everything from a comic book writer, baseball and hockey player, I have about 150 warrants for my arrest in the US, etc.

That's definitely an advantage of a common name, although sometimes the results aren't quite welcome. First result for my name is a woman in prison for attempting to kidnap a baby and stabbing the parents. Not an association I like for my name. The attorney, musician and actress are much more welcome.

It always a good rule of thumb to consider everything you do online is tracked and findable later. You can use the "whois guard" setting at your domain registrar. Or setup a legal entity to own your domains through.
