I am sick of people saying IM is hard...

Starving artists are "supposed" to be the "best". They wonder why nobody wants their "brilliant" work

Guess, what?

Your art might be brilliant but nobody wants to spend money on it.

But, I can tell you this... If you are sitting in front of the Eiffel tower making quick drawings of it, people will pay you...... And you will make a lot more money than those starving artists.

I believe the same problem is looming on Internet Marketing forums...
People believe they have to build these incredible businesses and do months of marketing to make money.

An 8 year old girl can make some lemonade, set up by a construction site, and make some money......

That same 8 year old girl can take pictures of interesting things and have their parents put them up on a stock photo site.

............. better yet (to make it more of an "Internet Marketing" thing)

That girl can go to a concert, take pictures of Justin Bieber, put them up on a site and those photos will be shared among thousands of people within minutes (through facebook, twitter, etc...)... With a little touch of AdSense or CPA that girl can make a few bucks..... (Yes, I know that won't get her rich)

But her photos will at least make her $100 over the year

The funny part is, most of the photos will be out of focus... But Bieber fans won't care...

When someone wants something, they will pay for it....

Since this isn't an article or ebook I will stop here.

I will just say in summary:

It is much easier to market things that people want when they want it.

MySpace Layouts will not make you money today like it did 5 years ago....

Figure out what people want and be there to provide it........

********* Warning*******

Like I said this isn't an e-book.

I know many of you Warriors would rather do evergreen products and services. That is great for you.

Some of us would rather have a mix... (Some evergreen) and (some big paydays)

Depends on whether or not you want to continue doing those little fast flash-in-the-pan profit making schemes over and over and over again or you want to actually build a business. Those little fast flash-in-the-pan profit making schemes bore me. I'd rather build businesses.

Well said. Seasoned professionals know this.

It is not hard making a quick buck on the Internet. However, it takes time, skill and money to build meaningful income streams. Doing it right is harder than most people thing, but long-term success is possible for the knowledgeable, diligent and patient.

I 100% agree. It depends what you're in it for. A quick buck over the next two weeks, before everyone forgets who you are? Or a stable, quality company that builds a solid reputation over the long-term, and brings in nice, steady income.

Ok, this makes me mad. I'm with Suzanne and Mark ..

Go ahead and continue what you're doing, having to think of the next big thing, making quick money that might not be coming in next week. <- this why 99% of people fail online.

or you could build an actual business that you know is going to be there next week, 1 year, or 10 years from now .. given you maintain it.

Internet Marketing is a business and you need to treat it like one .. Stop trying to get rich quick.

I'm not gonna knock the OP's point, even though I agree with Suzanne and the others. I remember what it was like to be struggling and scraping together money online any way I could. The OP's idea of putting yourself in front of the people who are interested and ready to buy in droves is smart. If you live in a cul de sac, good luck selling much lemonade. If you put up shop outside a Wal Mart in August in Texas, you'll need a lot of lemons on hand!

  • Doesn't this just bring up a major point about any task in life?

It's easy when you know how!

For those who do not have the experience, they will constantly take steps in all directions not knowing if they are moving backwards or forewards. If you manage to gain experience and become successful, then you have learnt what works thus it becomes easy for you.

It is definitely necessary to to have your evergreen businesses (I already stated that)

But, I think it is important to capitalize on the trends.

And the more you get used to finding where those trends are... It becomes easier and easier over time to capitalize on them.

For example........ (I personally don't and won't exploit tragedy)

You know the 10th anniversary of Sept 11th is coming.......

Create your "We still remember" 10 years later.... shirts and bumper stickers now

start your webpage optimization now and be ready for the trend.

Exactly, but use these opportunities to fund your main business.

Another aspect of internet marketing that seems to stump many people is when they go after markets/niches that they're passionate about, but have very little potential. They spend all their time and energy creating their product and making it the best it can be, instead of marketing it and doing the proper niche/market research beforehand.

Then they wonder why they don't make any money. Sometimes it is a delicate balance, and you'll not always get to only work on stuff that you love and are passionate about when setting up a business.

I feel that this is one of the primary reasons why there are so many starving artists out there.

Forecasting and capitalizing on trends can be very lucrative. Is it a bit more risky...yes...but the rewards can be great.

Does anybody remember the whole 'horse mane shampoo for human hair' trend. I know people who made a mint off of that and these aren't one off stories.

Some companies operate by forecasting what's going to be the next BIG thing and capitalizing on it.

Might not be your business plan or way of doing things but saying its not a "real" business is a bit short sighted.

I read this as "put up an internet marketing site, market in the warrior forum"

    Here's how easy it is...
    1. Create a product
    2. offer as a wso with 100% commission
    3. Repeat

I think what you're suggesting, basically, is to take action and offer a product that people want. I think it involves two more things: finding the people who want it, and offering it in a compelling way.

    People usually fail because:
    -they don't do the work
Slapping up a website and waiting for the big cash to roll in=bad decision

    -they pick the wrong product
Sometimes 'the wrong product' is wrong because it seems like it'll make a bunch of cash but they don't care about it at all.

-they don't know how to get traffic

    -their copy is boring/horrific
They've got a good product, they just can't close because their writing isn't compelling a BUY.

Evergreen or current hot topic... doesn't matter as much IMO.

I think the OP has a valid point, as others have suggested. If you position yourself between the prospect, and what they want, it IS 'easy' to generate some sales.

However I wholeheartedly agree that building a business is a much more stable way to generate a long term online income, than following trends and generating one off paydays.

Maybe another way to look at it would be this:

Build your 'business' first, and add the 'paydays' later.

I know from building an online 'business' (non IM related), that I can then add to by 'business' by giving those that view and regularly follow my website, access to the latest trends - or the 'paydays'.

Yes, in my particular case these don't come along every week, let alone every day, and they are not in the Bieber league when I do catch something appropriate, but they are targeted towards what my visitors want to know about, and as such they generate me nice earnings. The major difference is that I am already established in the market because of my 'business', and I don't have to chase around promoting my newest site for the latest trend for my 'payday'.

If diversity is what you are looking for, and multiple trends, why not create a whole site around it? Taking your Bieber example, just register www.breakingbiebernews.com (I should probably buy that now and sell it on...) and update it a couple of times a week with his latest gossip - which is your diversity, and run the site until he goes all Macaulay Culkin and vanishes off the face of the earth. I don't personally believe that you have to run from pillar to post, changing your focus every couple of weeks, just to make a few bucks.

But that's just my opinion ;-)

LOL! It's hard when you do not do anything and hope money will fall from the sky!

If people are not making money it's because they do not focus on bringing traffic to their offer and converting this traffic, they are buying instead of selling, they are dreaming instead of acting, they are buyers and not sellers....

It's indeed funny to see a lot of people complain that IM is hard. The problem is that they're overloaded with information. They keep getting new ideas and jump to conclusions, and end up not taking any action at all. With this thread you might have given a new idea to some people - market what is in demand right now. I'm guessing that they'll stop whatever it is they're doing and try to do what you suggested. Then there will be those who put down this idea as a to-do and concentrate on their present pursuits.

IM isn't hard. It's just so huge and diverse that a lot of people end up getting confused where to go. It's like a theme park so full of exciting rides that you do not know which one to get on first

IM is deceptively hard when you first start out and the main contributing factor to this is "information overload" because so many people make their money by selling products on how to make money, newbies are pulled in so many different directions like being surrounded by magnets...

what I've witnessed is that EVERYONE I know who has "made good" online, figured out this concept of "information overload" and they went on an "information diet"

furthermore, EVERYONE I know who has made it online focused on one main theme and one main traffic source.

It has been proven time and time again, focus is the key to sustained success...

    good post
