Working outside - need laptop that works in sun..

Hey,

I want to start working outside a lot more now but my current laptop is seriously hard to view in the sun.

At the shop they have HD GLARE, HD LED, XGWGA etc..

Does anyone know which one I need to view the screen easily on a sunny day?

They won't let me turn the laptops on and take them outside!

you do not need a sun smart laptop, you need a sun smart lap top case

Removable Notebook Sleeve with Integrated Sunshade

I'll try and remember to post back when it arrives. I live in the UK and it's coming from the US, so it could be a couple of weeks before it arrives.

That case isn't exactly very 'cool' is it.. I just want to sit on beach with a tiny laptop and work. I don't want to make a scene!

I can't believe there's no sites on this.. maybe someone should!

Enjoyed that. Let me guess, you are a graphics whiz?

I don't know of anything on a laptop that will do this right now, but Kindle has been advertising a version that is readable in bright sunlight for a few months now. They mentioned a new 'electronic ink.' Maybe it will be on laptops soon.

I like graphics but I am not that good / not my work just a random that fit the call.

Isn't exactly cool? What are you doing, working at an outdoor fashion parade?

So you don't want to make a scene but you want to look cool?

      That's a total contradiction.

I thought that thing was rather smart and at least you can pack it away and no get sand in it. Anyway, beaches are for relaxing on, not working on. :p

ONCE UPON A TIME there was a Warrior named Bob. He was sad. And frustrated. You see, Warrior Bob spent every last nickel on Internet Marketing e-books. But nothing panned out. No traffic. No sales. He was one sad Bob. Then one day Bob found a bottle. He rubbed it and out came a Genie who granted him 3 wishes. For Wish #1 Bob asked for a pet Dragon. Wish Granted. For Wish #2, Bob wanted Warriors' websites seen by 53 million TV viewers, for under $5 per broadcast. The Genie said... (click here)

Why don't you try the NuShield Dayvue screen protector? I've never used it but it looks like what you are looking for.

      Joe,

Because you're gonna be working on the beach
you should consider a notebook with a solid-state hard drive (SSD)
which cannot be ruined by sand.

As for your display, consider an LED-backlit display.
The Macbook Pro has an LED backlit display and
can be purchased with either a gloss screen (better for clarity)
or an optional anti-glare screen (better when in sunlight)
and an optional (and more expensive) solid-state hard drive.

      Optional reading...
All consumer notebooks (as far as I know) have TN panels.
However if you step up to a commercial grade notebook,
you can purchase models that have IPS and PVA / MVA panels
which have considerably better viewing in direct sunlight.
(but the gotcha is that IPS and PVA/MVA have lower picture quality)

Have you ever worked on a beach? If you sat on your sun lounger, got out a huge laptop, put on that big plastic shield around it.. you'd look a bit of an idiot (this is just my opinion!).

Only yesterday a girl was doing some writing work on a tiny little white Macbook Air thing.. looked rather cool. Unfortunately I'm a Windows guy.

Good point on the battery life.. brightness set to MAX.

I'm going to keep researching and post my findings if I find any!

Ok, I have worked on a beach many years ago when I was a life gaurd so that's not the same.

I agree you may not like the shield thing but if I was that bothered about looking cool I wouldn't have the lap top near the beach. Believe me, what I look like with a laptop on a beach and what some saucy young lady looks like, are two very different things. Some people just look good on a lap top and others just don't.

I'd leave the laptop at home and drink beer at the beach, or something rummy out of a coconut, or something.

...and that's just my opinion. Either way though, it's a nice problem to have I think.

Yeah, some feedback on that would be ideal.

These laptop manufacturers come up with all these fancy terms but never explain them.

HD Glare for example - what does that mean!?! I've been in the IT industry for over 10 years now and I have absolutely no idea. God knows what the average buyer is thinking!

Asking the staff in the stores here in Thailand is also beyond impossible!

An iCap will serve your purpose.

On the other hand, if you purchase a notebook with a solid-state drive ("SSD") (because regular drives tend to eventually get ruined by beach sand, including fine sand in the air/wind) then you're gonna save tons of battery life. That's because with SSD's you're powering memory chips rather than powering a constantly spinning hard drive.

See post #13 above re SSD's and recommendation to buy a Macbook : - )

So while you use more battery for brighter screen settings, you save battery with SSD.

These kinds of things help, but they still don't eliminate all glare. A lot of sunlight also reflects back up off the sand etc and this still makes picture quality poor.

Unless you spend mega money on some military quality screens then it is still tough outside.

I think the market for this could be huge if a manufacturer actually solved it at a reasonable price.

The new iPad addressed this problem and you can add a bluetooth keyboard to make it a usable portable-PC. I have an iPad and a MacBook Pro and haven't had a glare problem when working outside.
