1st Solo Ad - Advice Needed

Hi,

In an attempt to build my IM list I am looking to purchase my first Solo Ad and would be grateful for any info/tips from those experienced marketers on the forum. My offering is free access to IM products via a squeeze page.

I am interested in knowing how much I should expect to spend, should I be looking to buy clicks or visitors, what conversion rate I should expect etc.

All help will be appreciated.

Well, it really depends!! Solo Ads can be a double-edged knife because you could hit one and make a killing off it and it may only have 1000 subscribers and then you could try to scale up by hitting one with 50,000 subscribers and not make a single dime!!

    Targeting is ultimately everything here.

As far as buying clicks or visitors...well visitors is obviously the best. However, most of the Solo Ads that I have purchased have just been a flat rate.

...on the note of where to FIND solo ads...

It is my personal opinion that you are probably going to do best using people that DON'T advertise offering solo ads!! Those guys generally are hitting their list hard everyday and won't give you much results.

I have been lucky to find a guy once (in obscure niches) that had a contact form on their sites. When I asked him how many people he had on his list he said 30,000!! I offered him $200 to send out an email and easily made more than 5x my investment back!!

You should checkout the JV Forum. Another resource I use quite often to test new ideas is solo-ads.com. You can earn free ads by reading other subscribers' ads. Or you can choose the paid option to send solo ads to 3,000 for $25. It is probably best to test your conversion funnel before committing to a larger campaign.

Myob, I'm glad you bring that up. I was wondering, if that's how it works, are you not just sending your ad to a bunch of people who are quickly "reading" your ad simply so they can earn credits to be able to send their ad to a bunch of people who are reading ads so they can send their ad to a bunch of people who are reading ads so they can earn credits so they can send their ad to a bunch of people who are reading ads so they can earn credits to send their ad to a bunch of people.... ???

    Hi Dave,

I'm not suggesting you get on Anik's list or buy any of his products, although it would probably help you. What I am suggesting is you read his article on his blogsite. He gives a very simple straightforward approach to start list building. Also, you might use mailchimp instead of aweber, because they allow up to 2,000 contacts for FREE now. I have both and aweber and mailchimp, so both work. Here's the link. And good luck!

LegionNate, that's true, and exactly the reason why I use solo-ads.com for testing my ad copy. Call it genius, because these subscribers are incentivized to open and read your ad. Even though the open rate is still never at 100%, it provides a good metric for the effectiveness of the ad copy for conversions. Most of these subscribers seem to range from experienced IM professionals to newbies trying to get some traffic, which can be widely applied to similar advertising in many closely aligned ezines.

Many thanks to all for your input.

    Jeff,

Anik brings it back to basics so I guess I will do that in addition to posting a solo.

    myob,

I'm off to the JV forum to check it out!
