Microsoft To Buy Skype

by NMP

Microsoft buy eBay owned Skype for $8,5 billion. Will this make
skype better? Hopefully stability and less tech errors will occur.

But now what. Windows has not been the best deals lately. So
let us hope Skype does not follow MSN lines rather continue to
work as they have been doing just using MSN server network
structure.

The report I heard about the Skype buyout said it was an attempt by Microsoft to strengthen it's hand against Big G. I always welcome competition in the marketplace, even if it is only two big competitors.

I just hope that not those will develop Skype who worked on Internet Explorer... or we're doomed.

I think it is good that MSN got Skype. It keeps Google from having a monopoly on damn near everything. And yes hopefully it will have less tech issues.

Besides, Google has its hands full with Google Earth. They are sending photographers into businesses and stores now btw to collect even more data.

Yeah, and now they will probably charge a fee to use this system.

When this happens, people will no longer use it.

I suspect they'll probably bundle it into Windows 8 (or whatever they're going to call it) and discontinue MSN messenger. You already have to pay for some Skype features like Skype In and Skype out.

To Be Honest, I think they are biding their time. I know apple is bringing out Ipads Iphone's etc but I think Microsoft as someone mentioned are building their monopoly.

They might not do anything with skype but at the same time think about the person who owns the last property on a monopoly board. They always seem to win.

XBOX,PC'S just wait in 5-6 years Apple will be where Microsoft is now.
        IMO!

Lol . we don't want to pay for skype dude . if i did , i would just make the phone call . BUt all the same 8.5 billion is a lot of money

I think it's a brilliant move. People with smart phones are using skype more and more to bypass their provider and keep their usage minutes down.

This opens a huge advertising base for which they already have advertisers.

How very open minded of you...... It's Microsoft so it must be good, just as good as someone saying its apple it must be good. There is no evidence to back this up. Imagine if you bought a telephone from a company that had a history of OK televisions but had built one telephone in the past that was terrible... Would you consider that a wise purchase??

As has been mentioned I just hope we dont see what happened to MSN start to happen to Skype. I personally love Skype and use it daily for business and non business. Yes it has it's tech issues but the platform is pretty sound as it is.

Lets hope they don't change it too much and just refine what is already a great platform for global communication.

Lets wait and see what the first Microsoft update brings, I just hope they beta test it internally rather than send it out seemingly untested as they do with their OS'...

I'd rather see MS own it than Google. I'm wondering if MS has
plans for doing more with mobile and using Skype as a leveraging
    tool for entry.

The funny thing is that Microsoft did more than Skype YEARS ago. ... I remember using their video chat system with file sharing and screen sharing and drawing capabilities with a partner who was in a different country in 2000.

That's why I was a little surprise when Skype started to take off. I wasn't sure why it was so hip and cool. It actually did less then than MS was doing years before.

I think if Microsoft introduce an auto spell checker for skype that would be good, once the little annoying paper clip doesn't pop up and tell me the obvious, like " I think you are trying to type a message to your friend there" crap. Time will tell.

Microsoft and Google are not the only big competitors... More people are switching to Mac and Linux based systems for both business and personal use. This is why Microsoft is trying to buy up software that lots of people use.

Simply put... No. But, if they make changes, then it could be better and it could be worse. Microsoft making a purchase doesn't automatically make a program better.

There are already some fee's for Skype. But, if Microsoft edits the software and charges more than people are willing to pay, you can bet some smart marketer will outsource a new "Skype Wanna-Be" that will replace skype.
In effect, it will be similar to when Napster was shut down. Within a few hours, Morpheus, Bearshare, Limewire, and many others all sprang up to pick up the slack. When one business falls short, another business will get stronger.

      Just my thoughts...

    I have made 2 HUGE mistakes in the past 2 years or so;
    1. Actually paid for a legit copy of Windows Vista
    2. Spent $50 on a Microsoft hd webcam

... I am going to be pretty upset if Microsoft will modify Skype. It has never crashed and always worked smoothly for me...

Well that is a surprise, I have been using the MAC OSX version for some time now, I wonder if windows will now burn the OSX version of skype considering the history of these two companies it is possible, Ebay was never really a serious Tech company anyway.

interesting development, I do not think that just because there is now a new owner it would automatically make it better or worse, I suppose only time will tell the truth of that.

Only time will tell how this will play out. But let's face it, MS bought Skype not just for the technology, but for the 600 million users (growing daily) that it already has. And Skype isn't Hotmail. I read an article today that stated that MS overpaid for Skype.

How in the frick could they even know that already? Only time will tell if the investment pays off. It's definitely a lot of money though. This is one of the few times that I really don't have an opinion either way since I don't think there's enough information, yet. I use Skype a lot so I'm curious how this will play out.

But one thing's for sure, MS still has a ton of talent and resources to keep Skype growing.
