(Not So Secret) Old Trick Works Again

Hi guys,

This week was in the need of some unique and very specific content for a couple new sites, so decided to test an old trick that works (almost) every time.

Ask for interviews with experts.

Just to let you know it worked. Again. Sent an email this morning to less then 20 experts and right now I have 4 face to face interviews scheduled for next week. I bet some others will come next days.

Point is:

With all this content I'll be able to write down almost 50 unique articles in a very competitive niche, all of them filled with expertize content, not available elsewhere.

We all win!

  • Experts win MORE visibility in this competitive niche for free.
  • Visitors win detailed and expertize content.
  • I win amazing unique content and hopefully top rankings.

Old school rocks.

This is surely one of the oldest tricks in the book, YET, not many people use it these days. Beside, it's a win-win situation, everybody is happy in the end.

Problem is writing down 4-10 hours of voice into written content... but it's well worth it.

Something I forgot to say, I always video record these interviews... and usually I use some hot points to create video teasers. Then, upload them to Youtube... yadda yadda yadda. You guys know the process.

This is what outsourcing is for...transcription is a nightmare and an absolute time waster if you do it yourself!

The interview model works especially well in the offline world. While some people online may have become jaded with this, they have to remember that internet marketing as we know it is still pretty much a curiosity and very cutting-edge to the average person on the street.

You'll be reminded of this fact time and time again when you talk to people in the offline world who engage in very little (if any) internet marketing.

          Right on Paulie.

You know me, 90% of my work is offline and this is becoming a holy grail for us over here in Central Portugal.

I am amazed with the % of people answering us with short and positive feedback. They know we're credible -and that makes all the difference - but the vast array of opportunities is insane.

One of these sites has 6-8 niche markets. We just surfaced ONE niche and we're filled with interviews already. I can only imagine taking this ahead with all these niches.

          Amazing stuff.

Curious... How do you find "experts"? What makes someone an expert you consider worth contacting?

Is it people from related websites in your niche or people that are know through the media?

            Very interesting approach this!

Both from media reports and from related websites. BUT since this one is targeted at offline businesses, we just had to run a list of local biz and contact them one by one.

              Hope it helps.

Quick update: make that 6 interviews.

Bet some more will be scheduled next days, some emails will be read tomorrow and some people need clearance from directors to be able to give a positive answer.

I really need to do this more often.

Visibility is important to let others know about us. It is always better to take efforts and keep the door open for the opportunities instead of sitting idle waiting for the opportunities to knock the door.

It's a smart idea actually, you may pack all the interviews and sell them for a little price, I think that will be people interested in them, if the guys you interview are someone important in your niche.

As expected, the number of confirmed interviews is growing by the day. This has got to be one of the easiest ways to achieve great unique content in exchange of visibility to experts.

Did I told you guys this is also a great way to make connections for future Joint Ventures and/or advertising campaigns?

It is. One of the experts runs a company in this market and wants to advertise in one of the sites with yearly contact.

With some time and pocket cash this technique alone can turn into a business model.

Hey Fernando Veloso, any more details such as how you approach these experts so they are willing to give up their time? Do they want cross promotion or whats in it for them?

Do you further spin the content?

I phone or email them. What I do is show them these interviews will be featured somewhere (website/magazine/etc) and thats it. Usually business owners LOVE free advertising and visibility, thats why this works so well.

Spin the content? No. I use the interviews as they are. Perhaps a punctuation correction, but thats all.

Perhaps I can write down some new articles based on their informations, but after 10 interviews I'll have thousands of great unique content, so no need to spin anything, thats for sure.
