Before I reach for the corkscew, can anyone shed any light on this problem?

I cannot use an ftp client in Vista, the password is not recognised. I have had this before and each time the support desk at the host has sorted it out with new login and password.

I have numerous hosts and it has happened with all of them!

I searched on Google and found I'm not alone. The problem is that there is a patch available from Microsoft as this is apparently a bug in IE7. I downloaded the patch and unzipped it only to get an error message about not unzipping properly. I tried again and again - no good.

I also found a suggestion that, being of a different nature from other ftp clients CrossFtp was the answer. I downloaded it, registered and got the same problem as the other ftp clients.

I can't contact support everytime I want to ftp something!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Ray

I'm curious, what FTP program are you using? I use ws_ftp (for years) without any problems. - Russ

I use both IE and firefox. In firefox, under tools there is FireFTP. You may want to try that. Excellent ftp program in my opinion.

Edit: can't remember if FireFTP was an add-on or not. No matter, it's free anyway. I think it is standard for Firefox.

This may not be a solution to your problem but worth a shot, here goes:

You can try running the native ftp client of windows.

      >ftp ftp.myserver.com
      >user <enter your user id>
      ><enter your password>

See if you can connect using the command line. If you do then your user id and passwords are ok and something wacky is going on with the ftp clients on Vista.

I have the same problem on my VISTA Laptop with MS Outlook, passwords are not saved there, don't know why either, I switched to the included Windows Mail and it works.

As far as I know it's some type of security feature that resets passwords in Vista after each time the programm is shut down. I don't know why it only does this with certain programs. Can be changed in the registry somehow but I have no idea how. I found a few more topics from people with the same problem for Outlook on vista.

In IE, tools>internet options>privacy should fix that for you Tino.

Thanks for the replies, unfortunately I still have the problem. The password is rejected every time. I can access the cpanel OK.

I have tried various ftp clients. I gave up WSftpPro as I object to paying more for "support agreement" each year.

I tried the firefox plugin - same problem.

I've tried also, Cute, Filezilla, and CrossFTP

I'll try the hosting support and see what I get from them.

I'll report back if anyone's interested, as others seem to have similar problems.

    Thanks again,

    Ray

Your host probably requires you to set up a separate FTP account in your Cpanel for security reasons.

Some hosts will not allow the same password for Cpanel and FTP.

Just set up the account user and password, and set it to access the root folder.
