I have checked out the WF archives prior to this posting, but none of the prior threads fully answer my questions.

Here's the story: I have been busy looking for a good domain name for my sister's blossoming offline business and in the process have come across some established businesses that already have either the .com or .net extensions taken, but not both. Now while I am not advocating that my sister use a domain name that is already established and in some instances branded, it did prompt the following questions:
  1. What is the specific risk to an online business (currently getting decent traffic) by having a premium extension hanging out there available for purchase?
  2. Wouldn't purchasing the available extension (xyz.net) and a keyword of the unavailable extension (xyz.com) tap into their established traffic?
TIA

    Frank,

I saw many businesses register a domain names (or keyword) with more than few extentions to safeguard their keyword/branding. But to me it is kind of paranoid to register so many extentions because it is waste of money. Difficult to register all extentions, with hyphens, without hyphens etc etc.

Regarding tapping of traffic: Do you think registering disney.info or dell.info steals corresponding .com's traffic? Noway. They already had established their brand with .com extentions.
