Is This Worth Going After?

I found a keyword (a clothing accessory) that has 40,000 exact monthly searches. Of course the domain is taken, but..... "howtowearxxxxx.com" is available. The exact searches for that (how to wear xxxxx) is 1300 a month, with 50,000 exact Google competition. Can I get advice on whether this might be a good niche? And, is the "howtowearxxxx.com" a domain that would be effective? Thanks

50,000 is probably considered low-end, medium competition. I'd use SEOQUAKE in FireFox to check link numbers and page rank to see what you're really up against. If the links were over 50, I'd check to see how many were anchor text links before proceeding. The theory says anything is beatable with enough time and money, but realistically you want fairly easy picking as a newbie. Good luck.

I agree with ANonnaMoose as far as the competition goes.

I think that domain would be just fine. With some good backlinking you should be all set.

About the niche, though. You may have to watch out for people that are purely seeking information. Some will be seeking info so that they can in turn buy (your Amazon affiliate link would come in handy at that point), but I would guess that at least some would want to know how to wear an accessory because they already have it. Thankfully, there's always Adsense to monetize that assuming the CPC is good. Hope this helps.

        Hi there,
Have a look at the results on the first page of google for the keyword phrase.

See what the PR is for the first 4 or 5 sites and look at how many backlinks they each have. Get a free plugin for firefox to do this with. Google SEO QUAKE.

If the first 4 or 5 sites have less than 50 backlinks and there is a PR0-PR3 site you should do OK:-)

        Hope this helps

Unless this is an article of clothing that has a timeless and relatively universal appeal, you might be better off passing it by. Popular clothing styles and brands change so rapidly that in the time it takes you to rank, the fad might be over.

This is the kind of thing that happens with popular Halloween costiume sites. Some are popular one year, and folks get into building a site backed up with 3rd party sites and such, and then the next year comes and nobody wants that costume anymore.

Not saying that is the case with your clothing niche, just that it would be reasonable to consider that in your decision.
