Paypal problems for pen names

Hello Chaps and chapesses

So I have a pen name and I have chosen a business name "Middleton enterprises" for any payments I need to receive on my websites (I hope). I can't setup a paypal account under the same address or bank account and I'm obviously not going to confirm a fake address.

How can I make it possible so that when I am paid via paypal, they don't see my real name? I hope that makes sense! Cheers

Anth

Yes, you've got a problem. I'm not sure you have a legal way around the problem...you can call your paypal business name anything, but it's when you try and withdraw the money you will have a problem... regards Allen

I'm not looking to do anything uscrupulous, I'm looking at how to legally accept money via paypal, but not show my full name.

Thanks for your reply, I'm not quite sure what you mean. So you added "nursing hints" to your paypal, but doesn't it ask for your name when you verify bank details?

        Thanks

You can get a PO box and a new bank account reasonably inexpensively - $10-$20 a month and an initial bank deposit of about $20 or so.

The information on your bank account does not need to match the information on your PayPal account, and it is not necessary for your business PayPal account to be attached to a business bank account - it can be linked to a basic personal checking account. PayPal will not disclose any of your bank information to your customers.

Hmmm, I'll look right into that, thanks!

Upgrade to a Business Account and call your business whatever you like. Add an email address that is either from your business domain or businessname@yahoo.com. Nobody will see your real name anywhere.

So do I need to verify a business name at the bank before I do this? Many thanks

  • Keep your personal account, but set up a separate PP business account. They allow that. The business account will only show your biz name to customers. And CDarlklock is correct in saying that your PP account can be linked to any bank account, personal or business, any address. The bank isn't allowed to share any personal info about you or your account with PP. PP just makes sure the $1 transaction goes through, that's it.

    Why not?

If your business name is Middleton Enterprises, then simply open a bank account in that name (it can be "Mr. Yourname trading as Middleton Enterprises"), and open a business account with PayPal in the name of Middleton Enterprises.

You can have a personal PayPal account in your own name and a separate business account with them, too.

      Hey Suzanne,
I set up a dummy business account on paypal and sent some money to it from my email, however - my real details (and address) showed up! Do you have any ideas to get around that? Many thanks!

Did you actually FORM the business "Middleton Enterprises" or are you simply trying to use a business-sounding name so that you can collect payments? There are some legalities regarding registering business names. I see some comments telling you to open a bank account in your business name. That would require you registering as a business owner or forming an LLC. Not sure if that is what you are trying to do or not.

So Anthony Middleton is a pseudonym and you don't want people who pay by Paypal to see that Anthony is really Steve, or Paul, etc.

What will you be selling via Paypal?
Since your business is new, can't you rebrand with your own name?

      Hey Paul,
My real name is Anthony Middleton and my pseudonym is a different one. I'm selling ebooks etc. I'm using my real name in the travel industry and don't want them to cross wires.

      Thanks

That pesky FBI, eh? What are they like?!!

I, too, have a business PP account and when people pay me they see my business name. This is not the same name as my PP linked bank account.

Is there an option in setting up the payment button to choose whether customers see your business or private name?

BTW. I instantly warm to people who use the phrase Chaps and Chapesses. I always used that too.

Haha thanks, I felt like being unconventional in my greeting! No there does not seem to be an option for that. Do you have to pay for a business account?
      Many thanks
