Webhosting Packages that come with a domain?

There are quite a few webhosts around that offers a free domain with their webhosting packages e.g. bluehost, hostmonster etc.

I wonder whether you have access to the domain control panel of the registrar or not?

    Hi Derek

Your free domain is hosted within your own hosting package and therefore you use your own control panel.

Is that what you are asking?

That sounds pretty scary to me, and the host you mention don't always get the greatest reviews on webhostingtalk.com. I would recommend always keeping your accounts for hosting and domains separate.

Let say if I want to point the domain to another webhost so that I need to change the Nameservers, would I be able to do it?

Why would you want to buy webhosting with a free domain name and then point that domain to another webhost? What would you do with the new webhosting?

    Sorry I don't understand.

It's never a good idea to get a domain from your hosting company. If you part ways on bad terms, you might never see your domain again.

All I want to know is that when I do wish to use the webhost any longer. Can I transfer the domain freely out or not? If I have access to the registrar's panel, I will not have to worry on whether I part with them on bad terms or not because I will have full control over the domain.

Yes, that is my concern too. I have heard stories of people who had trouble with this (where they could not transfer easily).

In most cases where you get a free domain with your webhosting package, the real owner of the domain is your webhost (NOT you). So I doubt you will be able to transfer the domain away.

Your webhost uses the domain to lock you in. If you switch hosts, you'll find your domain taken back by the webhost. So I don't recommend you get your domain from your hosting company.

NEVER use the same company for your domain name and web hosting. ALWAYS keep them SEPARATE.

That is not true with BlueHost. Your free domain is the primary domain for your account and is registered in YOUR name by BlueHost. You have full control over that domain and access to change the DNS if you so choose... but why would you want to.

BlueHost just covers the cost of the yearly registration for you as long as you maintain the web hosting. If you decide to cancel the webhosting, the domain is still yours as long as you pay for the registration to keep it current. BlueHost is also a domain registrar. Their .com domains are $10/year and this includes domain privacy so it is a pretty good deal.
