Would this be of interest to people or not?

This is NOT an offer. I am NOT set up to do anything with referrals, affiliates etc. Actually don't even know how to do it.

Ok my experience is with actual physical products which I sell on the internet. Then I happened upon this forum and it looks like a number of people set up sites to refer people to an online company(similar to mine) and they make a referral/affiliate fee.

I am a total noob about this so if I get this wrong you know why.

So my question is if I were to figure out how to set up my site so that people can do referrals or affiliate links do you think it is worth my time? Or are people looking to become affiliates only for online ebooks, moneymaking ideas etc and not actual physical products?

Thanks for any insight. Not sure I would do it but am trying to learn how these things work.

Nooooo ... plenty of people here (and elsewhere, I'm sure) are potentially interested in being affiliates for physical products.

Some strongly prefer that to promoting digital products. (I'm more the other way, myself - 90% of what I promote is digital).

I agree with Alexa, most people sell digital products or are affiliates for them, however there are forums where everyone sells physical products, both work, it's just who you are putting the offer in front of.

Many prefer to promote digital products tht have no production cost and big comissions of typically 50% (clickbank.com is where most start)
There are plenty of people promoting physical product sales, earning a 2% to 15% commission, some do quite well in this arena, Amazon.com pays a small commission, but they add up for bi items like big screen TVs. One big afffiliate house for physical products is Commission Junction (cj.com)
I just heard the results of a study that indicate that internet advertising may actually benefit in store sales more than online sales, advertising that results in $1 sale online may cause $6 of in store sales to those who want to try on, play with or just touch what they are buying. In the future there may be more priintable coupon codes, gift cards as well as cell phone coupons that will insure the affiliate is paid.

I promote physical products/services as well as digital products/services. Mostly through Amazon (for the physical stuff), but also through Tradedoubler (UK), Shareasale and other networks.

It's not hard to get a skewed impression, on a forum like this, of where most of the money's being made, or where most of the effort's channelled, by affiliate marketers: a lot of them here do focus mostly (or exclusively) on digital products. But it is what it is - it's not really representative of the wider world of affiliate marketing, at all.

One word of advice, though: if you can, try to get a middle-man affiliate network to manage and track your affiliates and their payments. Trust might not be so much of an issue for the big dogs like Amazon with their Associates program, but it will be for you. Attracting affiliates is probably going to be enough of a challenge, without erecting additional obstacles for yourself.

      Hi Patrick,

DireStraits is right when it comes to physical affiliate products as are the others who have posted. I was getting ready to tell you about shareasale.com that represents many sellers of physical products on their websites. Most offer 10% or more as a commission to refer a buyer.

Using someone like shareasale or other company that offers the same services is probably your best bet. However, there is affiliate software available for you to do this on your own if you have the time to set it up and manage it. You can do a search and find many programs that will help you get started with affiliate software.

Getting affiliates is much like getting other sales. Use the right keywords, get that type traffic and with your "become an affiliate link", you can sign up affiliates. Also, if you have an existing list of buyers or even potential buyers (subscribers), many of them would possibly like to refer customers to you for a commission, especially those that are happy with their experience with you.

There are many ways to exploit this. All you need to do is start.

The internet is a VAST space that has INFINITE niches, Internet marketing is not the only one. I would actually reccommend staying away from IM/MMO because it is getting too saturated lately.

GREAT advice from ALL of you! Thanks for taking the time to post.

DireStraits Michael very good I was wondering how a person knows if they are getting what they should. Do you have any companies that do that you would recommend that you may have used?

      Hi Patrick,

I'm only an affiliate - not a vendor/merchant - and so I don't really know the ins and outs of what these companies charge for getting you set up, and what it entails, to be honest.

But if you let us know where your business is located (which country, I mean), I'm sure people here can offer up some suggestions of some of the better, more respected affiliate networks. You could then see about dropping them an email and/or giving them a call. I'm sure they'd be only too happy to give you the lowdown on how it all works, what it costs, and whether you're eligible for acceptance into their network.
