Whats the deal with giving people total access for a $1, is it hoping they will stay on or forget and get billed?

I think its mainly to build a list of buyers.. A buyers list is the most high quality list that someone can have.

I would guess like a zillion offers out there that they would be collecting your credit card for a "forced continuity", "Re-bill" monthly charge after the first month.

When joining sites like this be very carefull of the small print, or the lack of it!

It is only the most trustworthy who can really pull off a site using the $1 trial period, and if you abuse the trust then serious concequences will result. If you can carry it off then it is actually a great business model.

Several things are done here. People do $1 joins for the members area but then they cross sale the mess out of their customers (usually adult sites and other sites of that nature do this)

Most people end up converting to a rebill, definitely if the content or members area is worth it.
