Did you miss your birthday?

Well, I missed mine. Generally when I arrive at the Forum I click that top link into the main forum without scrolling down the page - unless I have a reason to.

I just discovered a little section at the very bottom of the page where Allen lists "today's birthdays". There are 8 today (Dec 21). Don't know how many there were on mine (Dec 8) because I didn't know that was there. It would have been fun to find out.

Did you receive an email from the Forum on your birthday? I did, and it was a nice surprise. I received a few from other lists I belong to as well. It's not quite the same as receiving a real card or anything - and I know it's just an automated feature, but a nice idea all the same.

One office I worked in surprised me to no end when the boss sent me a birthday card. Actually, his secretary kept track of staff birthdays and he just signed the card. It even arrived right on my birthday.

I hadn't seen that done before - that was back in the 70s - and a few times since, they've arrived over the internet - but only a few.

Does anyone else take the time to do this for their clients and subscribers? Many of us send greetings at specific national holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas, but how about birthdays?

Personally, I think it's a great way to stay in touch without making a pitch... plus it has to make your contact feel good to get such a personal note on their special day.

Don't you think?

I just sent out all of my Christmas cards yesterday, not only to friends, but also to customers. I have received phone calls from customers thanking me for their card, so I know it helps to create excellent client relationships.

It would be kind of hard to find out all of their bithdays without being a bit too personal.

I also receive cards from my customers at Christmas, and it makes me feel good to know that they thought of me.

You could make it optional in the opt-in forms. It would just be one more line to fill. My auto responder lets me modify the forms with additional info if I wish. I've never done it though.

There was a time when everyone sent Christmas cards - people and businesses. And then there came a point when the economy was bad - might have been in the '80s - and everyone cut back to only sending cards to their major and long-term customers.

Many people I've talked to said they don't to Christmas cards anymore because it's gotten too expensive.
