Nice guys finish last...

Hey Warriors...

A little while back, I joined Robert Planks membership site called "Double Agent Marketing". Anyway, I thought the page was well written and I was curious to see if I could find anything of use to me.

I was pretty much up to speed with everything there, so I decided to cancel my membership - I was even refunded without asking for it!

... fast forward a few days:

Robert makes a personal, 3 minute video explaining why I should join back up, and re-pitches the whole thing to me. I know hes a speed freak, so I wouldn't be surprised if he just said everyone's names all at once, then somehow edited the rest of the pitch in, batch style.

Now this is what I call marketing!

Even though I didn't join back up, I still thought "damn... what about folks that aren't so difficult to sway!".

Aggressive? Yeah...

Does it work? I'm a tough nut to crack, and it almost got to me. But I really liked the tactic he used on me for this one, and if I was just a rookie, this would have definitely got me back in.

The lesson here? Don't be a chicken! Ask for the sale. That's what you're here to do as a marketer. I'm sure Robert didn't give a crap whether I joined back up or not

You can dance around the idea of social media 'til the cows come home, have a million and one "friends", but it doesn't make the job of asking for the sale any easier.

If you have a fear of selling, I think it's time to rethink your career as a marketer. I know I struggled with this myself (self doubt, not knowing if my products sucked, what if people didn't like me, ETC)... but eventually, I got over it. As a result my productivity and sales went through the roof!

That was a a little over a year ago (I was marketing before WF), but the lesson was priceless. Don't be a "nice guy" .

Dean

That does sound like a rather brilliant idea. If it's a talking-head video (video of him talking), then it'd be very tough to edit the way you say without it being noticeable.

It probably works on many people. Let's say it takes another 3 minutes to get the email saved and sent off. If he gets 50% of people to rejoin at $37/mo for just 3 months, the time he spends doing that is worth about $555/hr.

Regarding the thread title, I disagree. In the short and medium term, maybe. But not in the long term.

Dean your title is a bit misleading. You can be an assertive marketer and still be a nice guy.

I remember when I was 16 and worked at Burger King. It was my first job. I remember a district manager type gave us this little speech during a store visit one day and the one thing that stuck with me was...

"If you don't ask a customer if they want to make it a meal, how in God's name do you expect them to make it a meal?"

I think it goes hand in hand with your "Don't be a chicken! Ask for the sale!"

If you don't promote yourself or your product your dead in the water. Nobody is going to come kicking down your door to get your latest product when you first start out. Sure industry-leaders get that kind of response, but if your new or beginner, you don't.

    Great post.

You're going to fail. If you're afraid of failure then you do not belong in the Internet Marketing Business. Period.
